I've been toying with the idea of doing some mods for a while now, but I've been scared of learning how to use a 3D proggy. How stupid I was! I downloaded GMax a few days ago, and it's much easier than I expected. As a result, I'm working on creating a model of the (very rough) sketch I posted in the "Design a Destroyer" thread a few months back.
Anyhoo, I've got to grips with GMax pretty well (or at least I think so), and here's what I've done so far:
I've only done the basic geometry so far, but I think it looks pretty cool. I'm going for a definite Terran feel (I'll try Vasudan stuff later...), hence the sharp angles. I've tried to style it like an old battleship (Google HMS Hood, HMS Vanguard, and HMS King George V in particular), as I think they're badass. :D The prow shape comes from Great War (the actual one, not the one with the Lucy) era battleships like the Repulse and Warspite, and is influenced by the Imperial ships from Battlefleet Gothic.
Anyway, this is what I've done so far - I'd appreciate any comments and feedback, so get posting!
Cheers!

Broken Image...
-
Dammit. Anybody know a decent (or even crappy) image host?
Try this link:
www.freewebs.com/pyro-manic/ironduke-wip1.jpg
EDIT: now fixed! See first post... :)
-
still broke
-
http://www.imageshack.us/
works great for me... multiple web codes, plus hosts BIG pictures. Remember to click on upload images LINK each time, otherwise it want to upload zips only frominitialwindow. Other than that it's cool...
-
There's photobucket (or is it imagebucket)
or there's
http://fattonys.com/images/
-
www.hostedimage.com works well.

Looks like it has some potential to be a seriously cool ship. Smooth off that nose though.
Oh, and kudos for choosing Max :D
-
This ship above looks like Mark II of it.
-
the warlock? i still cant see it...

Heh, I tried Truespace and couldn't make head or tail of it. Max is waaaay easier... ;)
As for being similar to the warlock, it's nowhere near the size. It's an advanced destroyer. It's going to be heavily armed, reasonably armoured, and fast. Basically, anything it can't kill, it can run away from...
-
Looks like the Warlock and an apollo had a baby (a big one)...
-
I don´t like that pointy front. Round it a bit, and shorten it. It´s too long and pointy.
Otherwise, it´s still too early to tell, it still needs a lot of work and details.

funny, I'm switching from TS to Max and am struggling somewhat.
I really like you're ship. I'd be inclined to widen the side pods (plan view)
-
Cheers. As far as Max goes, I just did the "Power Charger" tutorial that came with it. Has all the basics - extruding, cutting, bevelling, etc. The tutorials zip can be found here: http://www.turbosquid.com/gmax
Swamp thing: it is an early WIP, so I will change things. The bow is rather large atm, so it'll get reduced slightly, and probably blunted a little bit. And obviously, I've still got to put in lots of details - the underside isn't done at all, and I've got to put more on the superstructure and along the sides as well. Bear in mind it's only ~250 polys right now, so there's loads still to do.
-
pic! i can see!
not bad, i actually like the nose somewhat. it looks bloated or something though :p
-
it is preaty good:)
Right now im downloading GMax:D

The Warlock was a travesty of a model.
-
*looks up what 'travasty' means*
*decides its not worth the effort*
whats travasty mean? ;)
-
It means it's ****.
Basically.

what are you talking about? the warlock roxorz!! its very low poly fora 4km long ship, but still awesome.
-
No offence but I hate everything about it, It looks like a low-poly sobek on teh bottom detail level with a missing back fin.
Still it is a WIP so maybe I'll like the finished version better
-
Uh, right. Mixed response so far.
Aldo, I gathered you don't like the Warlock, but what do you reckon to this? I could do with some advice from someone like you... :)
kietotheworld - fair enough! :D I can't please everyone.
Updates coming soon....
-
You definately need more detail in the front of this ship. It seems like the rear end is pretty well defined, but the front looks like a shank (or whatever the improvised knives inmates make out of spoons are called), to an extent... It definately needs more work on the front to balance out the detail on the back.
-
OK, here's an update on the model. I've changed the shape of the bow, added some superstructure detail to the forward hull and under the ship below the conning tower, and I've messed with the shape slightly.
I still need to do more - the engines are like bricks, there's no armour on the central hull, and the weapon emplacements need adding. I also need to tweak the bow some more, and do something underneath to make it more interesting.
Currently at ~1050 polygons.

It's ****. It's a generic design, the texturing is apalling both in UV & tile levels, the turrets are pretty poorly placed, the engines are underdetails and the fighterbay not only has misaligned textures, but you can actually be flak-shot through it. Plus it uses Vasudan (Typhon) textures, which was daft.

You're a bit short on detail, at the moment. IMO there's 2 ways you can go; you can keep on adding extra shape to the model, or you can take the current base and add a lot of extraneous detail such as recessed hull plates, pipework, extruded 'blocks' or recessed sections for lighting.
At the moment, it's a basic design. It's hard to judge, because the beauty is in the details. You can have a very complex shape, or a simple one with a lot of fine-grain detail. But at the moment, IMO, it has more potential than shape.
What I would suggest, though, is firstly to edit the front to stop it being so pointy - that emphasises the low poly-ness of the shape. I'd also suggest adding something to give it more vertical detail... i.e. to add depth. Finally, try and be careful to make sure that you don't neglect one part of the design for another... i.e. leaving the top or bottom underdetailed compared to the sides, etc. It's an easy trap to fall into, and I've done so myself many times.
-
Looks good, but I think the bow needs to be changed, it looks too....out of place. At least make it straight, not bent down. Also, there's almost zero usage of the Z-axis. It's a spaceship! Make it go up and down as well as to the front and sides.
-
looks good. might start somthing new from tis...
-
PENIS!!!!! IT LOOKS LIKE A MAN PENIS!!!
really though, it kind of looks a lot like that Warlock carrier...
-
I was afraid of that very moment when I first saw the picture of that ship...
-
Something reminds me here on Battlefleet Gothic or whatever the name for the spaceborn Warhammer40k game was.
-
KT: you've got some issues, mate..... ;)
Lynx: Er, OK - afraid in a "whoah, that'll kick ass" way, or in a "Gaaaagh! It hurts my eyes!" way?
EDIT: Or are you talking about the Warlock?
gevatter: Aye, there's some similarities. The pointy bow has now changed, but the bridge shape is kind of similar (though it's also changed). I did use some Battlefleet Gothic pictures for inspiration, though it's early battleships that gave me the most ideas.
As for the warlock similarities, I can't really see it myself. Yeah, the front is (was) pointy, but that's it.
I'll be posting an update when I get home. There's been a major change to the bow, and I've made the conning tower more elaborate. Come back in a few hours.... :)
-
 There's always one who throws out the Penis claim... And to tell you the truth, I didn't see it that way UNTIL KT said it!
Bad KT!
Keep working on it though, I like it.
-
You're all dirty, dirty little people.... :p
Anyway, more updates, as promised. New bow, new bridge superstructure. Still nothing on the engines, but I'm working on some ideas. :)
Some more shots of the new bits this time. What do you lot think?
-
Looking good Pyro. Still needs a bit more definition on the front though.
-
You're actually turning me, just give it some shape on the middle bit, and make it a bit fatter it looks like 2 cruisers joined by a really long Argo
-
:|
it looks kinda like the first one was flying too fast and ran into a wall.... :nervous:
other than that, very nice
-
Middle bit will have some small structure on top, gun batteries on the sides and, uh, something underneath as well. Not sure what yet... Also needs turret mounts, armour and greebles in addition to engines (as opposed to bricks).
Kara: what should I do to it? There'll be a beam cannon somewhere, and a sensor boom thingy right at the nose, but what else can I do to it? I'm going to do extrusions for armour plates, but I can't see what else to do without destroying the shape....
-
An off center boom would help a lot. Just anything that stops it looking like a big rounded primative.
-
give it an (original) BSG bridge at the front.
-
A what? What's a BSG bridge? And the bridge is the huge tower on the back anyway. I might put a little observation bridge thingy underneath the bow though.....
-
sorry, I was too lazy to type BattleStar Galactica

If you're going for a battleship-esque prow, take a look at SW Eclispe. It manages to work a prow, a beam cannon, AND a ginormous antenna into the front, without disrupting the overall asthetic. Indeed, have you tried your existing prow concepts, but inverted (ie, wider at the top)?
I feel ATM that the prow structure doesn't fit with the rest of the ship; its curvy, its non-square, and the rest of the ship is both straight AND square. Have you tried not having such a elephantine prow structure?

Aren't we all? That does look like a great destroyer, though. Just even everything out and it'll look retail-ish. :)
How did you get 3D Studio Max? Store? Internet? If on internet, please give me the website because I desperately need it.
-
It's much better, but the connecting 'shaft' that leads to the very front of it needs to be differentiated a bit, IMO. It's too....rectangular.
-
Make it a rhombus shaped style.
Aren't I such a great speller? Such beautiful grammar, excellent. I can read at the highest level.
-
heh..first version of nose was much better.
Mayby you could try to extend and lenght latest version of it.

Not Studio Max, GMax. 3DS Max minus all the render code IIRC. You can get it pretty much anywhere.

I quite like the new nose

GOOGLE is your friend...
In case you don't know what GOOGLE is I did it for you, BANG! First entry, wierd the Discrete people send you to Turbo Squid for their free download (scroll down to lower left all the DL's you need are there, main file is almost 20mb and it seems you have to register it with them)

Whoa, loads of responses. Thanks peeps!
Right - the bow seems to be the most contentious part fo the design. I didn't want to change it at first - I liked the angular shape. It did look very low-poly though, so I changed it reluctantly. However, I do like the new one better now I look at it, so I'll be sticking with that shape (It took me bloody ages to change it anyway, so I'm not changing it back!).
As for the central hull, I've not done much to that yet. The idea is that it's going to be broadly similar in shape, but with a lot more detail. There'll be gun batteries down the sides, giving it a sort of "ribbed" pattern (I'm sure KT will have something to say about that...:p), and there'll be some more sturcture on top. I may also make it more of a trapezium-type shape, a bit narrower at the top, and a fraction wider at the bottom.
On the bow, there'll be a large sensor spike coming out of the very tip (where the gap is now), and another on one side about halfway back and up. There'll also be a heavy beam cannon somewhere on the bow, and an observation deck/sensor cluster underneath.
I've not worked on this over the weekend - been busy - but I'll post an update later today or tomorrow.
Thanks for all the comments - they're very useful. :)

....:blah:GamespaceLight 1.5 is easier than Gmax:blah:....
-
GameSpace Light limits you to ships with only 650 polys though.
To be honest if you like GameSpace Light you'd be better off getting Truespace 3.2 instead. Especially if you're planning to make High Poly models.
-
Hmmmm. TrueSpace 3.2 Demo doesn't let you save anything. Let me guess. You're some rich guy who can buy TrueSpace. I always look for free wares so you know what question I'm going to ask: can you email me a full copy of TrueSpace 3.2? [email protected] if you will.
-
The Truespace 3.2 demo doesn't let you save anything.
The Truespace 3.2 Full version available for download from here (http://www.download.com/TrueSpace/3000-2186_4-10298420.html?tag=lst-0-1) allows you to do whatever you like with it as long as you register here (http://forms.caligari.com/forms/tS32_free.html) first.
Seriously Cobra you need to think before assuming that someone has made a mistake. 5 seconds on the net would have told you that 6.6 is the most recent version of Truespace so half a seconds thought should have made you wonder exactly why I was reccomending an outdated version if I was suggesting that you buy it.
-
truespace 3.2 is free because it was old and outdated, so caligari decided to put it for free download. i got TS5.2 on a pretty good deal, (99$ for that, 2 tutorial disks, and a w00tload of TSXs; which are little extensions)
TS3 will satisfy all modelling needs, but if you want to upgrade to commercial version, it is much improved, and the rendering options are quite amazing :p
BTW cobra, dont immediately assume that were all rich people who will buy the full 600 dollar (!!!) version of a program, and then will send it to you for your own personal use ;)
also, DONT discuss warez in forums! it is a very GOOD way to get banned! i got TS3 for free as a start, and then upgraded to 5. and im not especially rich. actually, im not rich at all, i have a grand total of about 20$ usually :p
-
Not much progress as of late - I've been wrestling with HL2 and Steam... I'm working on the model this afternoon though, so expect an updatethis evening....
-
Thanks, kara. Now only about an hour-and-a-half to go before I can use it.
-
if you have any brain in that head of yourz youll use TrueSpace.
if ye dont well... pity on you.
-
i can't seem to figure out how to use TS, i can only use blender
-
Find a tutorial.
Can someone lock this thread? There's a new one for my ship now, and this 'un's getting spammed up.
