Interesting......

Indeed, just thinking though, not George's day for getting Bills passed was it? ;)

I agree with you in principle but I don't see how blocking this bill achieves it. As far as I can see the rebels are holding out until even more draconian measures are added.

What's the bill trying to do that's so bad anyway? (Not sarcasm.  I simply couldn't see anything bad in the article posted).

I love the way that link has the end shortened to 'ss_intelligence'

Freduian slip?

kara: As far as I can make out, it is trying to further centralize all intel agencies and bring them under a joint leadership, which would answer only to the executive branch. Remember the Office of Special Plans back during the run-up to the war? Well, say hello to the new norm.

"Intelligence reforms" are being pushed in the wake of "intelligence failures" over Iraq. Apparently, to fix a problem that was caused by the CIA's subservience and lack of independence, the solution is to make them ever more subservient.

Ah. Question is why on Earth would the senate commission on 9/11 have recommended a move that gave the senate less power? Just don't get that.

And why would the democrats be unhappy to see this being blocked?

Well, I think that is partly the same reason that Labour will for example, slag off the conservatives for failing at something when they themselves didn't even try ;)

Seems to me that America is going to tie itself in a lawmaking knot that will land them in much the same situation as there is in the UK. Too many laws to enforce, so the government just picks the ones that are beneficial at the time.

That doesn't make sense Flip. If the Democrats are just trying to humiliate the republicans or the president then surely they'd be blocking this themselves too (Or at least just sitting back and laughing at the republican in-fighting). Why they'd actually have a go at the republican rebels who are blocking this is what's confusing me. If they were just s**t-stirring they'd make fun of the bill and claim that it was so bad that even part of the republican party didn't support it.

I think the Democrats are playing the game slightly differently than it's played in the UK. It's not that they don't wan't the law to be enforced, they would benefit as much as whoever else is in power, but why miss a chance to take a shot at the Republicans while your at it? The campaign for '08 will be starting early this time round I think ;)

Edit : I will add my knowloedge on American politics is limited, so I'm not trying to make definitive statements here ;)
