Post by: Aggressor_Squad on November 22, 2004, 06:13:54 pm
I just bought a Cicero 16x DVD-ROM for cheap...follow instructions, conncected everything, blah blah blah...

i plugged everything back to back of computer...then i started testing the new DVD ROM.   CD-ROMS Worked...Audio CDs worked...when i tried popping DVDs in there...the drive doesnt even recongnize there's a disk inside the drive.  I installed PowerDVD but that coudnt detect there was anything there, and WMP also coudn't

for the jumper setting on the new DVD-ROM, i put it as SLAVE.

anyone got any suggestions?

Try making the master on the chain.  Some drives don't like being slaved.  Also, check the manufacturer's website and see if they have problems in certain configuration or if you need a firmware fix or something.

Does it have a Cable Select jumper in place?  I'm not familiar with the brand.  Can you post the model number?

hmm im not too sure what jumper my old CD-ROM is on...should I check and will it make a diff?

my DVD-ROM is on the Secondary EIDE Connector...(Not sure if that is needed info...just typing out stuff from manual onto here)\

so it might make a diff if both drives are on SLAVE?

and im not too sure what the model is...the only things i can make outta the box is CICERO DVD-ROM 16X...no model # or anything...and also there is a open CS jumper slot on there...but i have the jumper on SLAVE on the moment

what other device is the IDE cable plugged into?  You'll get conflicts if both devices on the cable are set to MASTER or both are set to SLAVE... a DVD drive should work easily set to Slave.  in fact, if it detects all types of media EXCEPT DVDs, i'd say it's nothing to do with how it's plugged in... it's a drive defect.

Try it as the only drive on the cable and see if it works that way.  If not, I'm with Stealth, it's a drive defect.  Also, I did some Googling on the brand name, Cicero seems to be a brand to stay away from.  Depending on how much you paided for it, you could probably switch it for a good Lite-On drive.  I've had a 12x10x40x Lite On CD-RW for about 4 years with no complaints other than the fact that I myself need a DVD drive.
