Title: What gun is this?

That is a SAW, right? I don't see the big box clip, or rather, any clip, and I see a scope (an odd thing for a weapon like the SAW, imho)...what sort of gun is this?

By the way, he's a US trooper.

I thought it was a SAW, just couldn't be sure. Although it looks like he's ready with the gun (this is an AP photo, taken from a Yahoo article about the new offensive in the "triangle of death" in Iraq)

looks like it's belt fed, look just behind the bipod legs.

FN MAG, or M240 as its known in US service. Belt fed replacement for the M60, in serveice with a couple of dozen armys. Brits and Irish call it the GPMG. Interestingly the M60 was originally chosen over it back in the sixties iirc, forty years later it replaced the M60. FN also made the SAW, or FN Minimi as its known outside the US, hence the similarity.

Anyone ever heard of the Hungarian gun wonder called Cheetah?
It is a high caliber sniper rifle designed to penetrate tank armor or snipe at extreme ranges.
There also was a version with repeating ability.

The rifle has a whooping 12,7 mm caliber with a precision sight that allows to shoot accuratly at roughly 1km.

I am really ashamed of it, but I haven't even heard of the Cheetah.

It is a tad smaller. .50 is about 13 mm AFAIK.
Though the gun is also made in a 14-15 mm caliber version.

Main part of the body looks identical to the Belgian-made MAG machine gun. You can also clearly see the belt bag, like Inq said. Also, that blocky thing on the side of the barrel is probably a laser pointer.

Jedi have no need for such weapons.

Yeah I am pretty sure its a SAW, just using a belt bag instead of box plus with a laser sight, bipod, and scope.

0.50 is  12.7mm based on 25.4mm to an inch, so yeah it is exactly 0.50 cal - most of this stuff started off in imperial measurements anyway.....

Talking of SuperGuns...

Never realised the guy who designed Iraq's supergun was mysteriously murdered in 1990.

I believe he was refering to the actual article, which is what Debka is.  Look:
Quote
Since most intelligence experts concede Iraq has been capable of building radiological weapons since 1991, its super guns – which can deliver a nuclear payload over great distances – will be one of the first goals of a potential US-led strike againstIraq

Wheres the nukes and superguns now? The original supergun was built into the side of a mountain, and had a fixed trajectory aimed at the Saudi desert. The idea that a supergun the size of the one Saddam had has any practical military use is ridiculous.

Wow... just WOW... your guys really know your guns, that's impressive, it really is.  because on 99.99% of other forums, you'd have jackasses pulling out some random, useless ****e, like "thats a small gun, you should see this one: *pastes picture of a destroyer turret or something*".  no really, i'm impressed, that's one thing that's always amazed me, is how so many people in this community know their **** when it comes to guns.

now I, on the other hand, know nothing about them.  so i have a question... i only recently started playing Ravenshield (Rainbow 6 3), which is really the first FPS i've ever gotten into, i never played any of the other classic FPS, like ghost recon, counterstrike, etc.  so i've been wondering... on a lot of the sniper rifles in the game, and in the picture someone posted above, that sniper rifle on the end of the barrel has a little "V" shaped thing, with the two corners of the V pointing to the left and to the right... what does that do?

also, on Ravenshield my favorite guns are the L851, the FAMAS G2, and the G36K... are they real guns that are actually used today?  or are they 1) made up names or 2) guns that are hardly ever used or known?

nice little assault rifles, have you seen the new XM8's yet?.. they're aparrently gonna replace (eventually) the m4's/16s (whatever rifles the US currently use with the rather antiquated AR-10 system)

it's little wonder, really that the australian army uses a Steyr AUG, as its main rifle of choice ;)

"Old Painless" the minigun from predator, was not only a highly modified version of the actual weapon, but the weapon itself is actually mean to be mounted on the pontoons of huey helicopters..
it has a serious amount of recoil.

Hey, I've been wondering, if they're planning to replace the m4/m16 with the XM8, does that mean the OICW is just being pushed back or is it out of the picture completely?

There's a bunch of videos of the XM8 taken at some tradeshow, do a google search for Blackwater Shootout 2004. The way it looks in one vid, it has literally almost no recoil. A guy fired a full clip, holding it with only one hand, and it barely moved.

they're still streamlining the design, i think, 'cause as it is, the OICW is huge

Stealth,
those things on the ends of sniper rifles are muzzle brakes. They divert some of the gas from behind the bullet out the sides of the V to reduce recoil....  I think.

All real, G36 is in service with the german army, K is the carbine version, not sure if its in service with anyone. Famas is french, again not sure if the g2 version in actually in service with them. L85A1 is the british standard rifle, they use an A2 version now because the A1 was a pile of ****e. Did they model the way the trigger keeps falling off in ravenshield?

yeah l85a1 i meant, thanks :)  wow you know your stuff! in ravenshield the l85a1 with a silencer is probably the most used gun... a few others i use are the FNC, the TAR-21 (badass for short distances... i like), the AUG, and my favorite pistols would be the mk21 and desert eagle .357 :)

The FAMAS is the standard gun in French military service.

Also, the XM8 is indeed going to replace the M16, I think in or around 2007-2008. The OICW's development is basically paused indefinately, as the guns are way too expensive to make as of right now. When tech improves, we'll probably get it, but as it stands, the gun is actually about 16-28 pounds (something like that.

Little tidbit: The XM8 is actually the assault rifle component of the OICW.

which is itself just a modification of the G36, probably one of the best, if not the best assult rifle in the world.

gotta love them Germans, if there's one thing they know its guns.

While I don't know about the statement about the G36, the XM8 ( I believe it will be M8 in service) is indeed a modification of the G36.

The best thing about the new XM8 is that one gun can be modified into a submachine gun, an assault rifle (standard), a SAW-type weapon, a sniper rifle, and a grenade launcher, all without tools.

Why does everyone think the OICW is ugly? I think it's very good looking, and much better than the big, blocky M-16.

Because it looks a bit like a stubby SMG with a bunch of plastic stuck on to make it look all 'sci-fi' and 'chunky', I guess.
