Well, as its not uncommon knowledge, i have 56k...
So suddenly i get a little popup bubble at the bottom of my screen... "Wireless connection detected."
Makes sense, seeing i leave the wireless card on, for this exact reason...
So i click view all or whatever it said...
[EDIT] Gah... If swooh was up, i'd post an image... [/EDIT]
Apparently, some neighbor is setting up a wirless system (seeing as it keeps turning on and off)... So now... Do i tap into it, and leech off them, or do i stay and suffer with aol?
-
'To check your connection status, unplug your PC and insert a screwdriver into the mains socket. Connection status will immediately become apparent......'

Edit : I could see the image fine Hippo :)
-
Leech the connection. Just don't use up too much bandwith (don't download lots of videos of naked women) and they won't notice... assuming they even know how to check the logs of what their server is being used for.
-
EDIT: Damnit... picture still not working...
Problem is, its either at extreme range, and keeps failing, or they like turning it on and off every 10 minutes... Both would make sense though... Now, if i can get aol to stop taking over all the connections, so i can actually connect through it...
*Hippo goes off to tinker*
EDIT2: erk... Stupid case-sensivityness...

AOL counts as cruel and unusual punishment. In that case, I'd say that using the wireless is not only legal, it's morally correct. :p
-
Just do it. I don't know what happens when they find out, but please tell us. :D
Edit : hmm, what if it's an AOL broadband connection? ;)
-
Leech.
If they've failed to secure their router with encryption, they obviously don't care about security and/or are technically incapable of using encryption, which would suggest they would be either unwilling or unable to find out who was using their connection.
-
Be careful...
They may not be as dumb as everyone suspects..
-
Could be the Feds, testing your loyalty to the state ;) hehhehehe
Edit : Seriously though, be careful, the outcome could be anything from them not even noticing you are doing it to a rather peeved knock on the door ;)
-
Actually, while you may piss them off, I'm not sure that it's actually illegal to leech.

Why don't you just ask them?
-
Leech. If they find out, play dumb and either say a)you didn't know you were, the computer does it automatically or b)you thought it was part of AOL.
-
I'd think you need a lot better signal strength to leech successfully, but if the alternative is AOL, then I'd consider drilling through the wall for a hard-wire connection, or threatening them at gunpoint until they gave you all thier bandwidth, or suicide....
-
I have a wireless router, I don't encrypt it, I don't care if someone leaches (so long as they don't start downloading vast qunatities of animal/kidde porn), no one around here would have the technical capabilitys to do so anyway, but I'm not charged by bandwidth useage so as far as I am concerned 'why not share?'
and the only person who uses it is my little sister on her laptop, no security fears there.
my computer and the one for mom are hard wired.
move the computer around the house maybe you will find a better connection.

Haa. You have AOL
LEECH EEEEITT!!!
