Title: What are the tangoA / tangoB files? (HOTU installation)
Post by: Gene on November 24, 2004, 12:53:32 am
I'm talking about the HOTU installation, which comes with 2 extra filler tango files, tangoa_fs2.vp and tangob_fs2.vp, as well as the tangoA and tangoB folders, in which there are filler files game_dat2.set.

I understand it's some kind of filler to make the game work without the actual tango files, but since I have installed the real ones, do I want these to stay? (keeping some filler files will cause the real ones not to work, so I wonder if that's the case here).

Of course neither I want the game to be missing something because the files it actually needs aren't there.

Tango vps are for speech, I think (ingame / inbriefing).

What 'real' files do you have, exactly?  If it's the proper tango vps, then you should be ok if you just remove the filler vps (to be safe, move them elsewhere and then check  everything works).

I've not tried the HoTU version, though, so can't be 100% what it does & does not have. :)

Like Aldo I've never used the HOTU version either (A fact that frequently surprises those who noticed that I wrote a FAQ about it!) but from what you and other people have said they are nothing but filler files designed to stop requests for the missing command briefings interfering with the game.

As far as I know they can be removed once you have the real tango files. Since they're so small keeping a backup in another folder shouldn't hurt any.

Maybe someone should write a sticky thread, including all the available info on anything regarding these matters, including links to pages and important threads already made, tutorials, hosted files, and any related posts that could help people in trouble.
The same questions keep being asked over and over again, and that would save time and effort.

I remember asking the exact same question as the thread title, a while back.

Oh on the German CD Retail Version, you have this Files, too.. they are big, but haven't any function...

I don't know, for what these Files are.. but you don't need it.

Huh? You're not confusing TangoA.vp with tango1_fs2.vp are you?

No I'm not. I know what tango1_fs2.vp is for, and I have the full version of it.

@Kara

No on the Retail CD Version of German Freespace 2 you have on the CD2 TangoA.vp and on CD3 TangoB.vp

I think it's a Copy Protection.
After you copy the TangoA/B Files on HDD, there are ~500 MB big and then to big to copy on a normal CD, but i say it before, you don't need it to play or to install the Game, but you don't know it, when you haven't informed about this.

If you copy FS2 with CloneCD or so, then the Tango A/B Files aren't bigger than before.

But i don't know, why the HOTU Version have this Files.

*pulls out the FS2 CDs for the first time in about 6 months*

What do you know. I see them on the UK version too. No idea what they are for either. Seeing as how you can play FS2 without the CDs now they can't be that important. Probably something to do with the installation or copy protection processes.

Just looked in my install directory, and all I have is Tango1, 2 and 3. Since I am playing with FSO and don't need the CD, these files don;t seem to actually do anything...or if they do...it's not essential! Could be the HOTU guys added them just in case!

Tango 1, 2 and 3 are needed. It's tangoA and B that aren't.

As for what TangoA and B actually do it's anyones guess :D
