So what is your favorite fighter in Conflict Freespace? Note that I added the GTB Athena to this poll as well, because it IMO, it's more equal of a heavy assault fighter than a true bomber.
So, my vote goes out to the Athena
-
Athena. No contest.

Herc, it can carry the prometheus and banshee and is armored. If the Athena could carry the prom, then it would be #1
-
Apollo, just for the design, not its performance (although it's a good all-around fighter)
-
Whoops. I definitely just voted for Ulysses but I meant Hercules. Yeah firepower. Damn Greek names, they're all the same.
-
Valkyrie. Speed and maneuveribility.
-
I love all the fighters pretty much equally, but you add the Athena...
The Athena is my favorite for one simple reason: best gun configuration. Ever. All four shots on target every time you hit.
-
Herc. Just think about it - Quad gun array...
I love to shoot Basilisks down with the Herc.
Screw the MK2 version. Less guns = MK2?!
On the other hand I like the Valkyrie too.

Which consumes much power. I prefer the Prometheus.

The one and only, the Valkyrie.
btw: The Athena isn't even a fighter :p
-
I don't really have a fav. I choose according to mission requirements. But i've usually used the hercules if possible due to its many guns, so it gets my vote.

(That's why I voted for it! The best fighter is really a bomber! :p)

Hercules. Primary firepower X 4
-
Herc. If you push it far enough, it can compete with any high-performance fighter out there :)
-
I have to say, the Herc was my favorite in the beginning of FS2... (untill the erinies came along at least)...
-
GTF Apollo. Blocky, heavily armored and about as maneuverable as a brick, what's not to like? :D
-
Go Apollo!
-
I loved the Apollo (best looking ship in FS1), BUT I have to give my vote to the HERC... It's the ship that won the war...
-
Valkyrie.

Ulysses, small, fast, manuverable, and quite capable of dealing with all fighters and bombers.
-
The Ulysses IMHO was the best looking ship in FS1.
Perhaps because it looks like a Dralthi...
-
Or does the Dralthi look like it? FS1 is older then WC3, I believe...
-
Either way, i still say they both look like pancakes
-
Ulysses , My most favored ship.
-
Athena is teh ub3r l33t 5h1p.
-
Its just so exciting flying with the Valkyrie :)
-
I voted for the Athena. Two banks of Avengers and a full load of Fury missiles and EVERYTHING falls.
But I like the Apollo and Herc too...
Not suprisingly - the poll results are expected.
-
Valkyrie
I didn't like how the Ulysses couldn't carry the Banshee. I also didn't like how the Athena couldn't carry the Prometheus or the Banshee. Sure, some missions you need the firepower and armor of the Hercules, but most missions I used the Valkyrie. As soon as it came out, I never used the Apollo again.

What? FS1 older than WC3???
OMG ;) Even WC5 is older than FS1!
-
...eh? You sure 'bout that?
Okay, so I'm off my rocker. Order I played them in, anyways.
-
WC3 came out in the DOS days, for reference...
-
Valkyrie. It needs more guns, but it's a beauty to fly...
-
They're right, WC3, 4, and (IIRC) Prophecy are all older than FS.
And the Dralthi have looked like flying pancakes since the beginning of the series... the WC3/P Dralthi looks less like one than the Dralthi I/II/III (1/SM2/Priv), the Jrathek (WCA), or the Drakhri (WC2). All of those are medium fighters, and all (supposedly) share similar mission profiles: target practice, flying targets, breakfast.
The Valkyrie is my favorite, but not by much. I like the Herc and love the Athena and Apollo, too.
-
It's a difficult question.
But i think i prefer the Ulysses, because it's looking good, is fast and have good Firepower. And because it's very thin, it's hard to hit and then you don't need a good Armor.
Second is the Athena.
-
Whoops. I definitely just voted for Ulysses but I meant Hercules. Yeah firepower. Damn Greek names, they're all the same.
Actually Hercules is Roman so you have no excuse :)
(In Greek mythology it's Heracles)
As for the poll, I picked the Athena for the simple fact it looks cool.
-
Only the first Dralthi truly deserved the nickname "flying bullseye", though.
-
Valkyrie, but Herc comes in a close second. Once you've pushed that afterburner to the floor, you're going places. :D I despised the Perseus in FS2; they call that thing an interceptor? Please; it was completely neutered. :p Give me the longest afterburner duration and highest speed in the GTA any day of the week.
-
@ngtm1r: Dralthi I and II share the same model. And the Dralthi III is even more pancake shaped, IMO. But, yes, the Dralthi I is definitely the weakest of the bunch.
@Mongoose: Yeah, you've got a point there. It's not really all that much faster than the Myrmidon. The only real advantage is it can carry Harpoons.
-
Valkyrie closely followed by the Athena. Both of them were poorly replaced.

Weapon compatibility must be the problem with the Valkyrie. I don't know if the Valk were compatible with for example the Harpoon, or the Subach, but I guess not.
-
It probably is. They just wanted to replace it with a newer model. Plus the Perseus was just then coming into limited testing, the Valkyrie was still on the front lines, most likely, just not where we saw it.

Dralthi II model was different. Wings were canted downward and the overall craft was smaller, with the guns in a different spot and having much shorter barrels.
-
Hercules. All you sissy "oh I am so special I can fly rings around you cowboy" coward aces will just become "oh I am so special I OH **** WHAT ON GOD'S NAME ARE YOU BRINGING DOWN ON ME" pieces of debris when faced by superior firepower. Peace!
-
Truth be told, the Valk and Athena had very good gun placement, making them superior shooters.
-
Does anyone have a link to images of the Freespace 1 ships? It's been such a long time that I can't remember what most of them looked like... I do remember falling in love with the Ulysses with the Prometheus and Hornet missiles during the end of the single player campaign.
-
You can check out my webpage for Freespace conversions to Babylon 5 Wars for the pictures. Click on the names along the left of your screen and a page with an image and information will pop up.
This is the Webpage (http://knossos.firenebula.com/fs1/fs1.html)
-
Little bit off-topic, but AA, you have a magnificent website!
-
Yeah, thanks for the linkage... now that I remember the Athena, makes me want to change my vote.
And also, go back and play FS1.
-

Thanks alot. Though some of it is based on my friend's design (who is also hosting my webpage as a matter of fact)

they also consume a lot of shield and armor and **** of the opponent, so i like the banshee :p
-
The Prometheus is better against armour. It is no doubt, however, that the Banshee is more ideal against Shivan fighters.
-
What, no captured Dragon?
-
Well as far as I'm concerned the Valkarye was a superb intereceptor an used it as often as I could but for the prelunged battles especiali were you have to take out enemy warships I prefer the Athena and even better the Hercules.
-
The Athena became obsolete when the Hercules was developed. I agree that the Herc is a better anti-warship weapon than the Athena. It is ironic that I find the Athena a better fighter despite it is designated as a bomber. And the Hercules is a fighter by designation, but it is better at bombing that the bomber-type Athena.
:)
-
Athena? Herc? GAAH!!!! Well my vote goes to the Athena because the amount of votes are smaller than the Herc...though I wish there were better loadout capabilities...:P
-
I am flabbergasted that the Ulysses is in such a minority.

if you rearrange the letters and take out the 'Y' you get useless

Not quite buddy but nice try.
-
Herc. Hands down.
Although the Athena comes close.... no. It's horrid for what it was designed for and only reasonably passable as a fighter.
-
Hercules. Herc > Herc II even.
-
Mmmm... Valkyrie
-
It's not that I don't like the Ulysses, TopAce. I just like the Athena more.
-
Ulysess, though it switches it Herc if it's the FS Port. Primarily because guided missiles seem to actually work in the FS Port, and never seemed to function properly in FS1.
-
I always had a soft spot for the Ulysses. I flew one the first time I took out Lucy...er...you get what I mean. Herc is a very close second. I agree on the FSPort Herc is best. Prom + Banshee and nothing but Interceptors :D

I love using Ursas to run gauntlets. He he...
;)

There are no cannibals here. We have eaten all of them.
-
Apollo 13 : Command we have a problem.
Command : Not again!
Alpha 1 : Goddamit Apollo 13, you've always got a problem.
-
Athena. The firepower and shielding were unbeatable, and its maneuvrability really wasn't all that compromised if you shunted power from guns to engines. :)
