I found this in the FS2 Wiki:
"The heavy photon beam cannons now mounted on all Terran warships were initially reverse-engineered from the superweapons mounted on the Lucifer in 2335 by the GTI engineers working on Project Hades. The ill-fated rebellion of these engineers the next year in their bid to overthrow the GTA led to the classification of the weaponry for several years. Once functional beam weaponry was proven to be practical, reliable, and superbly useful, a Vasudan variant was developed for deployment on the Sobek class of corvettes. These 'slash' beams maximized the spread of the beam fire on a wide arc across the target's hull, increasing the chances of disabling subsystems and turrets. Both Slash beams and Line-of-Sight (LOS) beams are now standard on all Terran warships."
Beam types??? since when there are Beam types beyond the AAA beams and the anti-warship beams....
I really don't know where the hell did they get that...
-
There have always been in the game...
Slash beams do exactly what they say... they're a type of anti-warship beam that 'slashes' accross an enemy's hull, ripping up subsystems. LoS beams are what you're referring to as anti-warship beams, I believe.
-
Sure, load up a mission with a Deimos and a Moloch. The Terran slasher beams rake across the enemy hull while the Shivan beams concentrate their fire on one point.
-
SEXP'd slash fire doesn't rake, though.

Here's a usefull reference on beams and such:

I felt that slash beams really were not that effective.
-
But damned impressive to see!
-
Slash beams are supposed to be for disabling subsystems, but they're not quite effective enough at that. They need to do slightly more damage to take out a turret in a single raking pass.
Using a fire-beam SEXP, though, a slash beam is a terribly effective weapon. Your subsystems go bye-bye now.
-
Yeah, they're able to aim at specific subsystems with the sexp :p
-
The Slash Beams are moving to fast, if there move a bit slower, than there are more effective.
But so.. there are useless, you can only use this to destory Fighter Wings there are in line of beams ;)
-
True evil is using a fire-beam sexp to aim anti-capital beams at fighters.
