The Scouring of the Shire, yes or no?

damn! 50 extra minutes would be more than enough to cover that and do it justice and still have lots of time of the other stuff.

the Mouth of Sauron looks awesome though.

The thing about the Scouring is that the way the movie portrayed it, The Shire was never even really aware that anything was going on out in the world of men.  So tossing The Scouring would require a second Extended Version of the other 2 films and all the actors involved to come back and film it, all to make the fans happy.  Alot of the extra stuff they already had filmed and it was simply a matter of editing and some of it was effects shots so it could be done any time.

Well, they weren't. But then Saruman comes along and brings the world to them. The movies stay true to the Shire in that respect, and I don't think it would have been out of line with the rest of the movies.

The Scouring wouldn't work in cinematic format anyway; it's too anti-climatic to the main story.  As an avid fan of the trilogy for several years, even though I would like to see the films remain as true to the books as possible, I have to admit that there are certain things that just don't work well in movie form.

As for that trailer...:D

I heard they did; it was the ending of the Two Towers, but got cut and should have been moved to the intro of ROTK, but again gut cut from that one.

What's the UK release for this?  Might put it on me xmas list.

Personally I hope they put the (in my view) the true climactic moment when Saruman and Gandalf.  Now theres a George Bush v (Insert goodie/baddie depending on views)esque fight I would like to see.  Damn I can't get away from politics.  Still looks good

That was kind of a let down.

"Leave the White Wizard to me."  says the Witch King.  And then nothing, no epic battle, no exchanged insults, nothing.

They didn't add the Scouring of the Shire? Screw that, then. I'll sit here with my collection of LotR DVDs, none of which match. (FotR - Normal Fullscreen; TTT - Extended Widescreen; RotK - Normal Widescreen)

They didn't film the scouring of the Shire so they don't have it to add. I do miss it but it would have added another 30-50 minutes to the storyline at least so there was no way it could have been in the cinema version (and therefore wasn't cost effective to film).

Are you guys SURE they didn't film the scouring of the Shire? Towards the beginning of that clip, Saruman says "Something festers in the heart of Middle-Earth." But that scene is at the end, I believe, after the defeat of Saruon. Could he not be referring to the Shire?

Threads merged.

No, I'm 100% certain it was the scouring of the Shire (i.e. had words 'scouring', 'of', and 'shire' that was mentioned as being cut and etc etc.

Because I don't have a ****ing clue what that scene actually is, and didn't at the time.

EDIt; it doesn't mean that they were right about it being added, of course.  Because I can't find anything that says it's in there, but I'm sure that's what was said (on Teletext just prior to the premiere in NZ, I think)

There's no way they'd have put the scouring of the shire anywhere in the second movie. It's completely the wrong place for it :)

Who do I have to kill/bribe to get that section?
Seriously, we need to get some nuclear power to threaten to nuke New Zealand unless Peter Jackson releases it.

The movies won't be complete without it, though it is encouraging that at least it was filmed, so there is a chance.

What's the complete, extended trilogy going to run at, like 12-13 hours or so?

That's not THE Scouring. That's A scouring. Specifically one carried out by Sauron after having won the War of the Ring. It also features footage of Samwise in chains, something that doesn't occur in Sharkey's Scouring.

In other words you'll have to do better than that to prove to me that the shot you've linked to wasn't filmed only for the scene with  the Mirror of Galadriel

EDIT : Took a look at the scene again. Although the rest of my point stands I have no idea if that is Samwise or not to be honest. It looks a bit like him but he's only on screen for a few seconds.

That's just after Helm's Deep, when Theoden and company drop in on Isengard. I also wondered what Saruman was on about, and I can only assume he's referring to Denethor's descent... or he might just be speaking bollocks to try and mislead Grandorf... with Jackson's script monkeying, we may never know :)

They did NOT film the scouring. The clip that was in Galadriel's mirror would have been a part of the scouring, should they have filmed it. However, that's the only bit of it they ever did film. I'm pretty sure Peter Jackson said so himself, somewhere.

hehe.

Well I'm pretty confident they didn't film the scouring of the shire.
They decided upon it early on because it wasn't part of the main story, and it was anti-climatic. Check the extra footage DVD's they say something about it in there I think.
And can you imagine trying to film a legitamite Hobbit battle?
It would be very difficult to portray it seriously...

BTW, did anyone know that Christopher Lee didn't show up to the premier of the theatrical version because it didn't include the showdown between Saruman and Gandalf...

As I said in an earlier post, the Scouring is anti-climatic, at least in cinema form, and there would be no real reason for Peter Jackson to film such a long sequence and then not put any of it in the film.  I do distinctly remember Jackson saying, either on one of the DVDs or in another interview online, that he never filmed the Scouring nor intended to.  What I think a lot of people need to remember is that the films are not the true story; they are Peter Jackson's interpretation of Tolkien's work, the true story.  Viewed in such a context, they are a masterpiece, even without the Scouring. :D
