Title: PILOTVIEW32 Error
Post by: Gene on November 29, 2004, 09:55:25 pm
I cannot read my pilot files with PILOTVIEW32 v1.0 Beta 01b (Build 3). I get the error "ERROR: Unknown file version".

This error appears both when trying read my FreeSpace 2 files (played with SCP install 3.6 on HOTU version), as well as my FreeSpace 1 files.

Does anyone know how what is causing the problem, and how can I fix or get around it?

the fs2_open pilot files have been modified from the original and i doubt it works with fs1 pilot files.

Let me rephrase my question: Anything I can do to view my CURRENT pilot data?

WMCoolmon made a viewer that works with pilot files through 3.6 (though not the current files, as they've changed format yet again).  Do a search.

I did a search by his posts on the forum as well as for pilotview, and found no results. I sent him a PM. If you know the link though, could you help?

You don't need to use pilotview... it tells you just about everything in-game... the only thing it doesn't, is points...

Points is exactly what I'd like to know...

then it looks like you need to find Coolman's version...

Look, no offence, but so far there have been 9 replies, and none of them (except the one who told me abot Coolmon) got me any closer to my request. I understand your joy of showing your deep wisdom to "the new guy" by means of giving abstract advice and guidance, but I'd really appreciate something that specifically answers what I'm looking for. If I need Coolmon's program, does anyone actually have it or know where I can get it? Telling me "you need to find it", when I already know I have to find it, is to say the least uninformative. I'd also appreciate, if applicable, some information on manually viewing my score through the file, but once again please be specific (hex location, method of interperting data, etc.). Thanks.

the score location appears directly after a list of recently played missions if you look through a hex editor, this location varies and i don't have fs2 on this PC to give you an estimate.  the score is read as a 32-bit integer.  if you want the score to show up in the briefing room, im sure someone can arrange that as long as it isn't me :). just kidding guys

Searching for threads started by WMCoolmon that contain the word "pilot" gets me this:
http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,23559.0.html

Unfortunately, the links are broken.  I'm bumping the thread to let him know he should fix the links.

Here are two screenshots of hex data of my pilot file Gene. They show the ONLY two locations in the hexfile which has the name of a recently played mission

My current rank is lieutenant, so the points should range at 10001-25000. Converted to a 32-bit integer, the number should range at 00002711-000061A8.

I searched all reasonably close locations directly after the freespace recently played file, on both places in the screenshots, and couldn't a possible match. At the second screenshot, address 10C2, I found 00003e44, which is 15940 and therefore could be true, but it's waaay after the point you showed me, after the long row of 00's and FF's, so I doubt it's what I'm looking for.

Wouldn't work with anything from one of Taylors builds anyway since they don't use .CSG files.

Besides score is stored in the player file not the campaign file.

If despite all that you still want it. Click me (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/Downloads/csgedit.rar)
