Post by: Nuke on November 30, 2004, 12:02:52 am
does anyone know any good european death, black, or doom metal? im kinda getting tired of listening to the same bands over and over. been going through http://www.metal-archives.com/ looking for bands but alot of them cant be downloaded on the usual file sharing systems, either because they are small bands or just not very popular. adresses to ftp servers or download sites would be good too. and the first kiddus slipknotus to say korn is gonna get treated to a  napalm enema and sat on a industrial furnace :D

Let me think a bit. Well: Emperor, Peccatum, Mortiis, Cemetary, Sonata Arctica, Nightwish, Finntroll, Source of Tide, Amon Amarth, Falkenbach, Lilitu, King Diamond, Seth, Slumber, Aura Noir and from my homeland Ignorabimus (not a famous band, but somewhat known :P). Use emule or soulseek to get music.

PS. Korn sucks
PPS. Korn really sucks
PPPS. KORN SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

all the last few remaining good american metal bands now all sound like korn. disturbed sounds like korn, static-x now sounds like korn, i am just fed up with all the executive manipulation that goes on here. soad, which i consider a european band, kinda has my respect for not allowning their music to be altered by media giants, however im not too fond of their musical style.

bands ive been listening to alot lately include (and probibly in alphabitical order as im reading them right out of the winamp media library) 1349, ajattara, asatru, bathory, borknager, darkthorne, deicide, dimmu borgir, eyehategod, gehenna, the kovenant, lamented souls, mayhem, nile, old mans child, satyricon, shadowden, superjoint ritual, therion, tristania, and witchery to name a few.

a couple of them are from the us and most of whats not is a hell of alot heavyer than anything youd ever hear in the us. i chat with this pagan lesbian chick from finland alot and she is always telling me about another good band that i havent heard before. most of them are imposible for me to find, so im kinda looking to see if anyone here has any connections or knows any ftp servers that stash theese kinda mp3s.

Sonata Arctica seems to be good, though I've never actually listened to them. Don't like metal meself, actually. Try some stuff like Dropkick Murphy's. (Irishmen from Boston, great stuff. Kinda hard rock too.)
The Pogues is nice too, but probably not noisy enough for you.

i just downloaded alot of in flames songs, and i have alot of opeth already. as for blind gaurdian i find them abit gay. i have tonnes of nigthwish as well (yes european, finland to be exact). kreator i will give a go, always liked traditional thrash. Sonata Arctica is power metal according to the metal archives, and i think power metal is gay (its a shame really they often have good speed drummers).

a few bands i found so far that i like (if anyone cares) are:
celtic frost, crematory, the 3rd and the mortal, faustcoven, ragnarok, the sins of thy beloved, and tvangeste. i aso fattened up my therion collection abit, missing alot of good tracks of their later albums. im probibly gonna try a few more viking metal bands cause ive liked what ive heard so far.

*edit* thanks fer the list zuljin, il check out some of those.

Try these:

"Isa" - Enslaved (black metal, really good)

"Volvere" - Fall of the Leafe (great metal, folky/proggy influences, simply brilliant album)

"Mad Moon Rising" - Manitou (excellent heavy metal, think proggy, heavier Maiden. Some great Zakk Wylde-style lead guitar work)

"Battle Metal" - Turisas (completely mad folk-metal. Has to be heard. Violins, accordions (sp?), hammond organs, etc. Sheer daft brilliance)

Anything by Arch Enemy (death metal, now with a female singer. Good stuff)

"Fate of Norns" - Amon Amarth (Viking death metal. Excellent)

"Crest of the Martyrs" - Twisted Tower Dire (They're American, but they don't sound it. They're an old-school heavy metal act. They're brilliant!)

If you're looking for some truly grimy old-school black stuff, then try to find some Hellhammer. They turned into Celtic Frost later.

Marduk - not listened to 'em myself, but they're meant to be black metal legends, and their new album got very good reviews (9/10). EDIT: I got a sample track on a sampler CD (off this month's Terrorizer magazine), and it's very good. I'll probably get it...

"Leviathan" - Mastodon (again, American, but this album is pure class. Really, really excellent. You need it!)

Nuke: What exactly is "gay" about power metal? Have you listened to any recently? OK, you might not like bands like ManOWar (****e) and Rhapsody (load of arse), but some "power" metal is excellent. Check out Twisted Tower Dire for a good example.

D'you like Iced Earth? 'Cos they're apparently power metal, and they're ****ing great....

I can't stress enough how much I don't like the whole "genre" thing. People hear that a band is "power metal" and they go "Ewww! Poodle-haired Germans in loincloths!" and reject it out of hand. It's a daft thing to do, because you miss out on so much good stuff. I mean, I refused to listen to Darkthrone and the like for ages because I thought "Yikes, black metal! It'll all be horrible wailing and no tunes!". Then when I actually listened to some, I was surprised that I liked it. Granted, I'm not a huge fan, but it's turned me on to the whole Scandinavian scene, whereas before I stuck rigidly to my NWOBHM stuff (it's still by far my favourite "genre", but I've now broadened my collection considerably).

PS: you can get the Manitou and Fall of the Leafe albums direct from the record label at www.rageofachilles.com - I think they do sample tracks to download as well. Also get a Turisas sample from www.turisas.com

Hope this lot is helpful... :)

Iced Earth is labeled power metal, but its more classic-thrash with somewhat the fantasy style lyrics found it power metal, more like Maiden or Dio.

Pyro: i got Iron tusk off the intardnet, but their tone sucks ass, perhaps due to the AGCFAD tuning?  their drummer kicks ass though.

Shadows Fall is awesome, the used to be metalcore, but they ditched the -core in their recent album (The War Within, 2004) which kicks ass.  The only other metalcore band i've liked was God Forbid, which again is more metal than hardcore (from what i've heard)

and how the hell did i forget Children of Bodom?
Title: looking for some good metal
Post by: pyro-manic on December 02, 2004, 06:36:54 am
That's exactly what I mean! You can't assume all bands in a genre sound alike...

Iron Tusk is a good song, but not the best on the album. See if you can get some of the others. The tone is a bit thick and fuzzy, not a classic "metal" sound, but that doesn't bother me - I'm a fan of the whole 80's doom sound (neck pickup, fuzz box) as well. See if you can get Megalodon (track 6) and Naked Burn (track 7) Blood and Thunder (track 1) is great as well... In fact, get the whole album. It's all good stuff. And yeah, their drummer is excellent. There are some really good guitar parts scattered about as well - look at Aqua Dementia (track 8).

I don't like metalcore at all. It's 'orrible. No proper riffs, no tunes, crappy shouty vocals, and miserable lyrics. In a word - tedious. I dunno. Most American metal is pretty crap, to be honest. They all seem to sound exactly the same, which could be good, but they all sound like Slayer, who are a bit crap. Well, that's not strictly true, but when a band does god-knows-how-many albums that sound exactly the same, then it gets rather boring.....

Bleh. Give me 8-minute songs about fighting, pillaging and drinking beer and I'm happy... :D

Shut up :D I don't like Slayer. Don't ask me why, they jsut don't do it for me at all....

Ooh, and I just re-read nuke's first request - doom metal. Get everything by Cathedral. Great stuff. Also try The Hidden Hand, Place of Skulls and Goatsnake. All good bands. :)

EDIT: bugger me, I forgot - Reverend Bizarre. Excellent band.

Post by: Nuke on December 02, 2004, 02:22:47 pm
ive been having a hard time finding good doom metal. probibly has something to do with the fact that ive been listining to lamented souls. an awesome band headed up by simen hestenaes (from dimmu borgir, borknager, ect). its been ground down to a nice slow painfull pace and yet still seems quite heavy. im kinda getting into the sludge sound as well. while death metal is like getting hammered to death with a minigun, sludge is like getting stabbed to death with a large dull spoon. eyehategod for example sounds increadibly excruciating to listen to. quite beautifull :D.

back to power metal, its not the vocal style i dont like, its the lyrical themes. fantasy just doesnt apeal to me as much. and though some is about norse mythology, power metal just doesnt sound viking to me. and while i do like bands like iced earth, i do feel that they deviate from the power metal genre.

Someone on another board i visit recommended a prog-metal band called Winds.  Its sort of a Dream Theater(re)-esque type music, but instead of Portnoy, Mayhem's Hellhammer is on drums and theres some guitar-virtuoso playing as well.

THESE ARE LEGAL MP3 DOWNLOADS FROM THEIR RECORD LABEL (DONT DELETE)

Fireworks of Genesis (http://media.theendrecords.com/Winds_TheImaginaryDirectionOfTime_ FireworksofGenesis.mp3) (delete the space before the song title, the url is too long of a single word to parse correctly)
Reason's Desire (http://media.theendrecords.com/Winds_ReflectionsOfTheI_ReasonsDesire.mp3)

I was tempted by that, but the reviews I saw said it wasn't particularly special. I'll check out the songs, though :)

EDIT: Not bad. If you like that, you'll really like Manitou. Here's "Machine Mind", the 4th track on their album:

http://www.rageofachilles.clara.net/MP3/MANITOU.mp3

Also, the Fall Of The Leafe sample track, "Waiting Room Snap" - the opener on their album "Volvere":

http://www.rageofachilles.clara.net/MP3/FOTL.mp3

"Waiting Room Snap" isn't typical of the rest of the album, actually - the rest is more, er, metal-sounding, in terms of sound and riffs, rather than rock. Bloody good album, though. I'd highly recommend it. It's something like $12 from the site, so it's dirt cheap

Again, these are the downloads from the record label website, so no banning me for it!

I've been hooked on something for a while, but it's sort of the antithisis of the sort of blood and fire metal your looking for, realy happy, cheary and upbeat but with a sort of depressing underpinning, eh, it's actualy imposable to describe, In an era when almost everything is quite like something else, they are not quite like anything.

If you are still looking for EURO METAL, i´d sugest Moonspell, they are a portuguese band with a very powerfull sound. Similar to Bathory, Thanatos, and featuring the same kind of riffs like old school Manowar. Very good stuff.

As for newer stuff, i can´t really say, since i left the scene years ago.

Recently I've been listening to V-mob. They sound kind of like a mixture between Slipknot and KoRn in some songs (especially in "Feel No Shame"). They're not very well known but here are a couple links where you can download full versions of some of their songs:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/v-mob/ (this might take a day in order to get accepted but they have several downloadable full songs)
http://www.garageband.com/artist/vm0b

I presume that since people can legally download their songs off of websites that it is also legal to download their songs via P2P.
