i have a performance problem when using the SCP inferno, and the normal SCP 3.6, every time a large ship appears on screen like a corv, the FPS drops to from 69 to10 and the game is basically unplayable i have a
AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2600+
512MB RAM
Windows XP Home Edition
ATI RADEON 9500 drivers 4.10
DirectX 9.0c
now this should be more than enough to play it? i have no troubles with the likes of Doom3 and half-life2
Also is there anything going on with the ATI's and shinemaps?

Try unchecking -pcx32.
Inferno makes heavy use of PCX maps. If you use -pcx32, they'll get loaded as big 32-(or 24-?)Bit file into your memory.
Let me guess, 64MB gfx card?
The pagefile could be a problem too if it's too small.
-
I do beleive the option for compressing pcx immagas was implemented try that
"... inferno..."
oh, that makes a little more sence.
"oh no we can't posably use less than 400,000 textures on a subobject, we need a specalised build"
-
Hehe that's funny. ;7
Wait... I'm working for Inferno. Arrr, you're so mean. :ick:
-
you might try the 4.11 drivers... i have a friend that claims they did quite a bit for his performance. i have not confirmed it though, but it might be worth a try.
-
Hmm, sorta like "oh no we can't possibly have shinemaps without using ancient Catalyst drivers" eh? :p
I think there's an option -pcx2dds you can use in the command line but it doesn't seem to affect memory usage on my system.
-
is that true folks? i have not touched any of the new effects yet, but i see references to ati not doing well with shinemaps (?). only on new cat drivers? thx for the info....i am lazy and trying to leave work right now - to go home and likely play fs2! :D
-
i have the newest catalysts - i have no shinemap problems
-
realy?
you have the same card as I. did you ever lose them or were they working the whole while?
I haven't had shinemaps working sence 4.4 (I think) (wich is why I stay at 4.4, or what ever it is)
-
Kazan/bob, what card do you have?
-
4.4 is the last driver version that works for me too, and the majority of other people with higher-end 9X00 Radeons.

Funny
Actually most of our large ships use 1 large dds map now, of course they look far worse up close than the tile mapped version, but then we'd need 4 or 5 large maps which defeats the point...
Only 2 of our ships go over your texture limit now and 1 is 20km long and so can't be mapped on one texture.
We also had a custom build before you put that limitation on us :p
-
now, useing jsut one map on a huge capship is going a little too far in the other direction, 3-5 maps is what you should be gunning for. all I know is that you have some ships that have more than 16, when I told you to fix this the responce was "but I don't see any problems" and now we get people comeing in talking about performence problems specificly with your mod. I beleive an I-told-you-so is in order.:)
-
Well those ships aren't included in the current release, and only 1 ship in that release has more than 16 maps (which will be fixed in an upcomming patch)
R1 was designed for retail FS2 and not the SCP, we don't recommend using it with the SCP (but people do anyway)
I personally have little problem running the current release on standard SCP exes.
-
Talking about ATI based graphic cards and the SCP - is anybody else experiencing major problems with glowmaps? Especially shivan ships kill my framerates.
Duron Applebred 1800 (200FSB*9)
512 MB of DDR 400
Radeon 9550 128 bit, 128 MB
Catalyst 4.3
Though I suspect my system is just overloaded - I'll get my new HDD very soon, once I got it set up it will hopefully work better.
-
Do you use the hires glowmaps?
-
No. Standard version from the shinemap dev thread.
Terran and Vasudan capships decimate my fps, but shivan ones make the game stop for a few milliseconds. Sometimes even a shivan fighter is sufficient.
-
Do you have pcx32 enabled?
What's your complete command-line?
-
-spec -glow -jpgtga -ship_choice_3d -2d_poof -snd_preload -d3d_no_vsync -nobeampierce -radar_reduce -fps
The problem is severe when starting a mission. It gets better after maybe a minute or two, but never really vanishes.
-pcx32 is unplayable, I tried that, but that makes the game a slideshow. :ick:
-
are you useing the animated glow maps?
-
Try disabling snd_preload.
-
Standard version from the shinemap dev thread.
As I said, it's Lightspeed's glowmaps. The animated, low-res version. :) Using the static glowmaps didn't change anything. Odd.
Overlord : I'll give it a try.
Edit : okay, I gave it a try. It helped, in a way - the stuttering gets better after ~20 seconds, and vanishes after ~2 minutes. That's a start.
-
wow thanks guys, i try some of those options, and i c wot the standard SCP plays like
