Given the love/hate (or in some cases hate/hate) feelings some people here have towards political and other serious issues, I think we should introduce a system of "tags" for these kinds of posts in the Hard Light section of HLP. That way, people can have some idea of what threads are about before they click them (given the, uh, "creative" thread titles often used :D), and decide whether or not they want to read it. You could have:
[POL] - politics
[ECO] - economics
[ENV] - environmental
[REL] - religion
etc. to do this. Simply put the tag in the thread title when you create it. That way, people know if they are going to look at a potentially contentious thread, and steer clear or dive in depending what they want to read.
I suggest this is entirely voluntary - I'll be doing it from now on - but I hope it'll catch on, because the atmosphere has soured slightly of late, with Liberator in particular feeling under pressure because of some of his views, and Kazan getting ever more worked up about things (not that they're the only ones). Of course, it could be worked into the board system (I dunno, perhaps have a few new Message Icons to choose from when creating a new topic?), but that might be tricky (me knows nothing about forum coding).
Anyway, hope you like this idea.
Cheers!

then again, if people just say in the thread title, for instance: "politics", you can usually tell.
and if you look at the majority of threads, you can usually tell whether there's a political, environmental, etc. discussion
-
if you have something to say to an admin you should probly PM them
-
I think threads should auto-lock as soon as size=5+bold text is detected.
-
I think this is the equivelant of a voice in your car telling you the seatbelt isn't fastened...
-
Besides, you never know exactly what kind of rant it's going to degenerate into until at least 5 posts in ;)

No, that should sticky the post, make it a news subject and make the thread title flash in all the colours of the rainbow (fabulous!) just for fun.
I mean, inane rants are fun to read.
-
Y'know, I could probably make it do that.
-
I dare you. :D
-
Neither do I support it nor am I against it.
I concure with Stealth that in 9 out of 10 cases, you can say what a thread is about by simply reading its title.
-
Fair enough. 'twas just a thought.
-
What might be recommendable is that people add more descriptive titles to their threads. Sometimes the title says nothing.
-
It's a teaser, not a title.
What? :nervous:

Basically. Especially since certain members can take a thread about chia pets and turn it into a socio-political debate. :doubt:
-
Since you mention it : Evolution of Chia Pets (http://www.improb.com/airchives/paperair/volume4/v4i4/chias.htm).
I bet that 'report' is a christian-liberal-fascist-republican attempt to undermine the constitution of Never Neverland. Or even worse. ;7
Well, never mind. ;)

Quit the freaking christian bashing, guys!!! Or I'll ban every single one of you!!!!!!!!
-
No offence Sandwich but... :wtf:
Did you read what mitac posted? ;)
-
I think.

Okay, we'll go back to bashing Jews and blacks.
-
What about the gays?
And the children: "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!"
-
lol omg.
Ahh...
Well I think a disclaimer on some threads would be appropriate or a new Terms and Conditions clause for members.
Something along the lines of acknowledging that while the majority of people in the forums are mature they will make poor effort in showing it. Members should also take heed that more than often sadistic and poor taste in humour is often displayed for the viewing of others, but you may reply with similar distaste for vengence.
Something like that anyways...

Um... you're not above the ''read before you open yer' mouth'' rule... It was obviously a satire. And I hope you do ban all of us. Then you can sit here alone and wallow in it.

...christions suck... :nervous:

The Ions of christ have gravity?
-
Raa: I'm pretty sure he was being funny/sarcastic too.
-
Eh? That's not the typical way Sarnie tries to make hunour... Except for the multiple exclamation points.
Either way. I feel like defying authority tonight, and I really don't know why.
-
Troll.
-
Sarcasm? What's that? :D
BTW, I forgot to mention that nuking Never Neverland back to the stone age might also be an option. ;)
-
nah, tagging would never work, monkey banning is mutch easier.
-
He's got a point there.
-
I think it'd be a lot better to make a 'Debate Floor' forum for all political/economics/religion discussion. I've seen this on another forum and it works pretty well, since only the people who want to discuss the issues ever see the threads on them. To reduce clutter on the main page, it could even be a subforum of Hard Light.
The only problem I see is finding someone to moderate it.
-
I think we'd rather everyone just avoided being such complete asses, rather than trying to find new and inventive ways for them to discuss the same things. I for one have no problem with political threads and what have you - if people want to discuss that then that's fine by me.
What's getting on my nerves is that certain members don't know where to draw the line... when to shut up. As has already been said - banning is a much easier option. Less hassle for us and instantly effective.
It's also fun ;)
-
Shrike, he can just use a bot to lock every thread at a random number of posts, I wonder how long it'd take before people figured it out ;)
-
Heh. I would (mod it), but I don't think the administration would like it much... (I'd be fair! I pwomise!)

Admins regularly check the Hard Light forum and close threads when necessary. Finding moderators would not be a problem.

Am I the only one who realised he was kidding? :nervous:
With regard to the topic, I second Kal. :)
-
Liberator in particular feeling under pressure because of some of his views,
If Liberator would not frequently make personal attacks against everybody who disagrees with him, then perhaps he would have some sympathy. As it stands right now, I doubt it.
I think he is getting exactly what he deserves.

Apparently. :sigh: I guess that's the last time I hope people will understand me without the use of smilies.
-
Heh, you could at least have replaced some of the '!'s with '1's, I'd have probably got the message then :p
-
You know, I completely forgot about that. :p
-
Don't make me assimilate you....
