I registered and activated an account at http://www.burbworld.com/fs2netd/register.php (account name Gene). Then I launched FreeSpace, made a pilot "Gene" in multiplayer mode, and in the multiplayer options (in the PXO box) typed "Gene" as the username, and the password is matching the one I registered at burbworld.
I also copied the file fs2open_pxo[1].cfg.fs2 into my /data/ directory of the FS2 SCP installation.
When I try to connect, it says "FS2Net connection failed".
I use a cable modem, and I'm behind a Linksys router if that might be the problem. I'm not behind any firewalls.
Can anyone help?

Download the Media Vp Core file from the Wiki, that should let you play.
-
OK so now it connects. But it says "you are playing with hacked table files". I never modified anything in the .vp files. How can I fix the problem?
That, and also when I connected I found no servers. Is it just because nobody is hosting, or is it a problem on my end?

Go to C:/games/freespace2/data/tables/
delete everything thats in there (or cut and paste it to save them)
now try
If it works why dont we play together, I will be on soon (if anyone cares)
-
When do you get on?
-
Get on now, lets start with the terran gauntlet to warm up, shall we?
I honestly havent played freespace multiplayer in forever. This will be interesting...
-
Fine with me.:) and don't worry I ain't any good ether.

Whoo, that was fun. Thats the first time I have played more than one mission at a time multiplayer in 3 years! I am for sure going to be doing more of that in the future. If you haevnt played in a long time like me (previously) i strongly urge you to check it out.

MatthewPapa gave you one half of the answer (although I'd reccomend renaming the files to .tblDISABLED rather than deleting them). The other half is to look in your main FS2 folder for a file called speffects.vp
This file contains Lightspeeds original version of the Singleplayer effects which break multiplayer. Deleting the file will end the problem but will give you the old standard FS2 effects back. So instead replace that file with mv_effects_c (http://dynamic4.gamespy.com/~freespace/fsdoc/index.php?pagename=media%20VP)
also, be sure to follow the set up guides:
