Hi guys. FS2 Open is pretty cool, came looking here, and since you all seem to be a lot more knowledgeable about the universe then I am, figured this was the place to ask.
In FS1, Shell Game is a particularly odd mission. The game suggests that I should try to figure out what's going on so as to better plan the attack.....but for the life of me, the only explanation I've been able to come up with is "Shivans are very odd creatures."
Anybody know what exactly is supposed to be going on in that mission?
-
is that the one where the cargo starts exploding by itself? if so just try and scan the remaining cargo and kill all unsheildes shivan stuff, when you finish the mission you are told that some other fighter wing retrived the sheild tech.
-
No, it's the mission where booby-trapped cargo containers destroy the GTT Dobbs and GTT Stern. It's a shell game because the four transports each pick a different cargo container, but two of the containers are rigged to self-destruct.
The recommendation isn't terribly helpful; I only figured out what it meant when I replayed the FS1 campaign earlier this year. Basically, some of the Shivans don't arrive until the transports are destroyed, so if you destroy the first few fighter wings and then destroy the transports, you won't have to deal with all the Shivan fighters at the same time.
What makes this even easier is the fact that someone forgot to add departure cues for the transports, so when they reach the node they just sit there and do nothing. So tell your wingmen to ignore the transports, then take out the four freighters, then mop up the fighters that are there. One the area is clear, destroy the two transports and the last few wings will arrive. Then secure the area and wait for the Harmon, Marcos, Stern, and Dobbs to do their thing.

Ah, allright. It's as simple as that, huh? And all this time I was trying to analyze why on earth the shivans were hauling booby trapped cargo around anyway, thinking it was somehow relevant to the mission. Thanks a bunch!

And welcome to HLP, phatosealpha. :)

Another tip I found useful on this mission was to call in the two available reinforcement wings as soon as the mission starts and order one wing to each freighter. You don't get penalized at all for using the reinforcements, and they help a great deal in wearing down the freighters enough to kill them in time.
-
Actually you do get penalised. You just can't see it. Calling in reinforcements instantly halves the number of points you earn for that mission.
-
Oh...that's right. I was just thinking of a few other missions where command goes off on you for wasting precious reinforcement wings. I was never much for points anyway. :p
-
Ahh but remember that points do add up and eventually lead to promotions :D
If you don't care about them you shouldn't really care about command complaining at you :D
-
What's the highest obtainable rank in FS2? I've never gotten higher then lieutenant in a single campaign. And do points carry over when you restart campaigns? I've noticed that it empties out medals when you switch/restart campaigns.
-
Highest is Admiral.
If u open the FS1 sound vp then you can find the congratulations messages read by both captains (Bastion and Galatea)... but for Admiral they go summat like
'You have just been promoted to Admiral. You must have cheated to get this far. Well done Admiral Cheater I think you have to go open a gym or something."
-
Points carry over. No one would ever make it to admiral otherwise. I don't think there are enough enemy ships in the game :D
And I don't think it should be clearing out your medals on a restart.
