Title: Problem with my model
Post by: Jouzin on December 04, 2004, 05:02:27 am
OK so hello people :)
I have some problems with my model and I need some help from more experienced Model Makers :)
My e-mail is [email protected]   just write here your e-mail or something if you want to help me and I write you more abut my problems here or on your e-mail.

Post the problem up here. If you get an e-mail address you can only have one of us help you. Post the problem and we can all look at it :)

If chatting still won't help then I'm sure someone will be willing to help.

In the meantime take a look at the modding section of my FAQ. There are links to a large number of tutorials in there and hopefully one of them should be some help.

The basic shape is there but it needs a hell of a lot more rounding.

there are some useless edges, which just increase pcount without adding anything to the geometry.
Also, the model isn't stable and some faces will not be rendered in the vanilla FS2.
I see there also are many interscetion.
You know that they'll work only with FSO, and not vanilla FS2, ya? Also, when an object is connected to another with some edges, but they intersect each other with some other edges there could be problems.
Moreover, when 2 edges share the same position (so that you see only one edge when they are infact 2 or more) there could be problems, unless you triangulize.
I'm referring to the nose: the diagonal top object intersect the main hull but seem connected in the front: If it is connected you'll probably have problems, if it isn't connected then you have overlapping edges and you may have problems if you don't triangulize that area.

First picture is from 3D Studio Max
Second is from Truespace 3.2
I must give here one more picture from Truespace

In 3D Studio Max I stopped work on it and now I work on it in Truespace because I didn't find some convertor from 3D Studio to cob.file.

Problem with this model is in FRED I klick New ship\terran  and GTVCa Nemesis than I klick CTRL and mouse button and I got error message that Mistake is in FRED.exe and if I want to send this mistake to Windows server or somewhere or don't send this mistake.  Hmmm If somebody want I can send him .cob file of Nemesis and he can tell me where I made mistake(s).

Thank you :)

Sounds more like a table error. Are you aware of the table system  and what you need to do with em ?

If you want it to look like the Prometheus, you may want some reference pics.

OOOh no way. I didnt mean to take credit for it if I seemed to. I can't model worth sh*t. :D  I found those pictures while I was doing research for the Stargate: Earth's Defense mod. The author's site is here. (http://www.stargate3d.fsnet.co.uk/) He's got some good stuff there. Nice death gliders, wraith darts, puddlejumpers, even a ha'tak but he took it down for some reason.

First picture is from 3D Studio Max
Second is from Truespace 3.2
I must give here one more picture from Truespace

Thank you :)

If you have Max 4 or better, you can use the max plugin (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,26260.msg776961.html#msg776961) (Raa's post). In that case, you never even have to open Truespace. If you have a really old max like 3, you can still export to .3ds*. In any case, for the love of god, don't waste your talent on Truespace, 3dsmax (any version) is much better than TS 3.2 (yes, I hate TS)
btw, did you make that Prometheus (which is :yes:) in TS? Now imagine what you could do with something more productive like max
*For untextured models, use the DXF format.  .3ds is problematic sometimes, texture names are shortened to 8.3 filenames, pivot point changes don't always get recognized by TS etc.

Getter: Yeah Jaffa kree :D
I am going to post it don't worry :)    Wait couple of days :)
knn:  I have TS 6.6, 3D Studio Max 7 and Raa's plugin :)
Yes I made it in TS 6.6 :)
OK I will try to remake it in Max and name it as Prometheus version 2 :)
Version 1 from TS  and  version 2 from Max.
I wonder which one will be better :D

EDIT by Jouzin: Crap another one mistake. Not would be better but will be better.  I am going to kick myself for theese mistakes   :wtf:

You said you made the Nemesis in TS 3.2, so I assumed you only had that version. I don't know anything about TS 6.6, it is undoubtedly better than TS 3.2, but I'm pretty sure Max 7 is more powerful (Just never undo an edit triangulation on an editable mesh with and edit poly modifier, it causes an instant crash ;)).

er, What ever happened to your Prometheus?

Incidently, I secured a few Asgard ships for JC4JC's SG-1 Earth's defence mod. So if you need a reference in regards to Asgard ship problems let me know...

The valhalla is fine but the O'niell has a slight texture error (too may windows in wrong place for no apparent reason.) They use the same maps in the same locations but somethign got screwy, or it was mapped wrong.

Hi getter.
After some time  I am back online :D
I have decided to finish my two beloved ships :)
So this time I will finish them  seriously. Just need some time. Perhaps 2 weeks maybe more or less.
But first  I must find my backups of these ships :D   Hmm on which DVD they could be... :D

hmm guys i have some new problems :(

I will be very thankful for your help.

Here are images : (http://shadowmoon.mine.sk/images/prob.JPG)

So the questions are :
Why it doesn't want to show me whole model on the first image  ?

Why it shows me whole model on the second image after in SUBOBJECTS I change to detail0.

Where I made a mistake ?

And one more image from TS, perhaps it will help you find where I made a mistake.

Thanks
