Title: Bad attempt at a picture.

Well I made this pic to go with the campaign. I know the background is lousy and that I need a white glow on top of the blue glow of the Herc 3's but I did create this using Paint and Corel. At 1:00am today (GMT)

How do you do decent star maps?

As for the pictures, they are not as bad as you think. Maybe make the renders a bit sharper?

The background looks much better now, those plug-ins are simply great. For the engine glows I usually paint them on a new layer using the spray can and then ad some blur and motion blur, and a small sunburst effect.

I think its a little too much glow.  Do a low opacity one that covers what you've got now and then do a much brighter (almost white) core spray for each engine.

I think it's a bit yellow for Arrakis.  Other than that, pretty close.

And you guys do realize that this thread had the same conversation twice in it?  I had already posted about luarcell, gliteratto et al up at the top........

I finally had another go at a pic.

The beam looks okay though I can see that you did it out of a rod I think and rendered with glow effects.

I like this one much better, but it does have problems...

First, the picture is off-center. I would put the ship quite a bit further to the left, and if possible add it's target. If you REALLY want to make it look good, change the view angle on the scene to add some depth. Put the Firing ship in upper left corner looking down and almost towards the camera, and maybe have the corner of a ship hull being cut through in the bottom right corner.

Second, the beam core needs to be "hotter." Make the core much more white-let most of the green come from the glow around it. Even if the beam center is RGB 255,255,255 the eye will still percieve it as slightly green because of the surrounding color, and it will look much hotter.
