Personally, I think the man deserves it, he has had what can only be described as one of the worst jobs in history, America's scape goat.
And yes, I do think that, regardless of my opinion of the UN, regardless of his own son's behaviour, this man has been forced to deal with the United Nations, a job not unakin to Kindergarden teacher....
I've used the CNN site deliberately because it will give it's own lean to the story.
Be Good....

He's certainly not the one to blaim for the corruption but he's still an ass. If he was displeased he could at least speak his damned mind instead of being a damned zombie.
----
Random person; "Someone is commiting genocide in Africa!!!"
Koffi; "...let's talk about it..."
[6 months later]
Koffi; "We've decided to place a non-effective embargo on said country."
[6 months later]
Random person; "They're still doing it, damnit!"
Koffi; "...uh, let's talk about it again..."
[6 months later]
Koffi; "This time we have decided to try and scare them with SANCTIONS! Hehe, you didn't see that coming did you?"
Random Person; "Yeah, whatever dude..."
----
Seriously, the united nations is a cesspool of the worst kind and does nothing but waste money and resources.
-
Heh, but that is not Kofi's doing alone, it's because the whole system cankers along at a pathetic pace with every member playing 'Veto your neighbour'...

Koffi is still an ignorant ass. He doesn't do **** to change things so he's just as bad.
Standing ovation my ass.
Flying bullet his head.
:p

Is this a reference to Rwanda in '94? Or Darfur?
-
Yes... that would fix everything :p
-
Who ever said that getting involved in the affairs of other nations is the UN's business?
I'm not reffering to Darfur specifically, just in general.
-
Because people see wanting to 'talk about it' rather than bomb the place or send in an army to kill even more people as weakness ;)

Nah, if they actually *enforced* the sanctions to the best of their abilties, I'd be pleased. But currently they are little more then a formality to fool the ignorant masses.

Alas, this is true, it's another puppet show :(
I suppose what I am saying is, if you are given a turd and asked to make a sculpture, theres only so much you can do unless you are one of those really wierd artists ;)

Actually, if I were given a turd and told to make a sculpture, I'd tell the guy to shove it back in there and get the f*ck away from me. :D
-
Kofi Annan - Your ideal job is turd sculpter.....
Actually according to JobPredictor.com, his ideal job is prostitute..... funny dat ;)
There could have been a lot of worse people in charge of the UN though, I will say that :)
-
You're pissed at the UN for not taking action against Sudan (and presumably other counties with human rights abuses) and yet I see no criticism for failiing to take action against the US for Gitmo, Iraq etc etc?
Interesting.

:wtf:
-
I am, quite honestly pissed at the UN for not taking action in anything, but 'action' is a kind of broad term.
It's like the movies....there's American action that usually involves lots of people screaming and running away from Big explosions etc, compared to, for example, French action, which involves lots of crying and people slapping each other ;)
-
Who says they didn't try, Rictor? Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your point of view, the US holds veto powers on the Security Council. The Human Rights Commitee has passed resolutions condemning US actions...which is something of a joke, IMO, since Libya heads the commitee right now and Mister Khaddifi does not exactly have a good record in that area.
More to the point, Sudan is at least an order of magnitude greater then anything you have mentioned. Let's deal with the big stuff first, 'kay?
-
If you want the UN to get off its ass and do something, well then that applies equally for everyone. And so far, I'm not seeing any threat of sanctions against any of the nations involved in Iraq, including Holland. Sure, put sanctions against Sudan, Iraq etc, but I also want to see that against the powerful nations who break international law.
-
They try occasionally, usually someone Veto's it.
That's the weakness of the UN, all Chiefs, no Braves.
-
Triage, Rictor. Triage. Save who you can, fight the fights you can win.
And especially since in the case of Iraq, such sanctions would be A: pointless, B: unenforceable, and C: bad for the Iraqis.
-
F*ckin' right.
The UN is a toothless waste of space now. It needs shaking up drastically, or it should be closed down and a new body set up with some actual power to get things done.
ngtm1r: How do you define "the big stuff"? Killing millions of civilians in wartime? Supporting or even planning and mounting coups against democratically elected governments? Sponsoring terrorists? Using mass casualty weapons on heavily populated areas?
-
Too late to do something about the Second World War, Pyro. Hell, the UN didn't exsist then. Also too late to do anything about stuff from the '60s and '70s.
And if you're suggesting any of those refer to current events, cite your sources, and pray they are reliable ones.
-
Guatemala. Argentina. Vietnam. Fallujah. Colombia. Venezuela. Look 'em up.
Just for balance, and to show I'm not just bashing 'Murrica for the hell of it, read up on a little island called Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean. The British (my) government should be hung out to dry for that little fiasco. (To summarise, it was a British territory up until the 60s, when the government decided to sell it to America so they could build a huge airfield on it. Unfortunately, there were a few thousand people living there. So the government had all their animals killed, loaded them on ships and dumped them on the quayside in Mauritius.)

To suggest Fallujah's casualities were in the millions is pure hyperbole. No war involving America since World War 2 has had civilian casualities in the millions. Even Vietnam didn't.
-
Oh, so just because it happened in the 70s it's OK? We can all forget about it and carry on as if nothing happened.
I didn't say any one war. Civilian casualties at the hands of the Americans are massive, whether it be through the odd bombing raid or a full-scale invasion. And you might want to look at this:
http://www.rjsmith.com/kia_tbl.html
Second last paragraph:
Translation
The Hanoi government revealed on April 4 that the true civilian casualties of the Vietnam War were 2,000,000 in the north, and 2,000,000 in the south. Military casualties were 1.1 million killed and 600,000 wounded in 21 years of war. These figures were deliberately falsified during the war by the North Vietnamese Communists to avoid demoralizing the population.

Annan--when he is ousted, I will be happy.
The UN--when ousted from NY, I will be happy.

Ahhh... so you're the one putting up those posters :p
