Title: A glimmer of Hope... but is it real?

"The uprising is a legitimate right of the people to express their rejection of the occupation by popular and social means," Abbas said. "Using the weapons was harmful and has got to stop."

Interesting... He's taking a big gamble here, I hope he is sincere and that it pays off.

A glimmer of hope for what exactly?

Barghouti withdrew, so he doesn't even have to make any concessions anymore. If I were a Palestinian, I'm not too sure how happy I would be at the prospect of Abbas getting elected.

Quote
Uprising leader Marwan Barghouti's withdrawal from the Jan. 9 presidential elections has left Abbas the clear front-runner, giving him more leeway to risk alienating some potential voters in exchange for laying the groundwork for rapid post-election peace moves.

Well, I guess this is the question I'm asking really, is this Abbas guy a puppet or someone who's actually realised that someone has to stop shooting first?

What my friends in the region have told me leads me to believe that he's not actually a puppet.

Hes got little support among Palestinians, not exactly a puppet but hes Washington and Israels choice. I wouldnt pass much heed of this call though, Fatah took part in that bombing the weekend, this is just for show.

Is he a puppet? I don't know. All I know is what I get from media snippets, and that hardly reliable.

In my opinion, he's too trusting and too willing to compromise. But again, thats my opnion and its coming from behind a computer monitor halfway across the world. Israel is in a position of strength, and they can make any deal they want - trying to bargain with someone who controls your fate on a whim isn't really practical.

I did a report over these two warring groups, and came to the conclusion that a lot of Palestinians actually werent doing anything. A lot of these terrorist thugs with bombs strapped to them just came and went as they pleased.

:wtf:

A simple '++' will suffice, unless you are taking out your frustrations on your keyboard :)
