FF councillor’s demand for scones becomes political hot potato

A DEMAND for tea and scones is turning into a political hot potato in Limerick.
Limerick County Councillors have been called on to put up a united front in their request to have scones served along with the tea and biscuits they normally get before council meetings.
Cllr Kevin Sheahan, the leader of the Fianna Fáil group, has circulated a letter to the 27 other councillors calling for a scones allowance to be included in the forthcoming estimates.
“The tea/coffee and biscuits which are provided for committee meetings should include scones. This is something that happens occasionally and the request is that it would happen on all occasions,” said Mr Sheahan.
Some councillors refused to comment on the scones issue.
One source said: “I think the request has arisen because one particular member, not Cllr Sheahan, loves scones.”
It is not clear if Mr Sheahan is also seeking a special jam allowance as well.
The Fine Gael leader on the council, Cllr Patrick O’Donovan, said they had not yet given any consideration to Cllr Sheahan’s scones request.
Cllr Sheahan is also asking that the councillors be given full lunches on the day of council meetings.
“Now that we have our own in-house canteen I believe management should concede to the request that our councillors would have the same facility,” said Mr Sheahan.
The Fianna Fáil councillor’s shopping list also seeks additional expenses for attending away conferences and increased mobile phone expenses.
