Here's something that's been on people's request lists ever since... well... a long time ago. :) It is now possible to fly in a different wing than Alpha, Beta, or Gamma.
Now I know people have figured out tricks to fly in any ship from Alpha 1 through Epsilon 6, but this is different. Now you can fly in any fighter from any wing at all. :D FRED will let you specify the wings that appear in the loadout screen as well as the wings that appear on your HUD - and they don't even have to be the same wings.
This feature is now in CVS and can be found in the FRED and FS2 builds in the 20041215 thread (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,28629.0.html) in the Recent Builds forum.

hot diggity

Cool, you should be proud of yourselves. I'm sure a lot of mission designers out there are jumping for you right now...i know i am :D!
-
you sir, are a god.
-
Yeah , So i'll be in the Rogue Squadron :D
-
Yay!
-
*shuffles off to attempt a HoL mission*
-
Awesome! I was just thinking about this being implemented, it's exactly what I needed.
-
Tehe. Now I get to be Omega 4. :)
-
Now someone must make a mission/campaign about Kappa 3 lost in the nebula :D
-
I guess we now need a scrollbar at the bottom of the ship select and loadout screen, so one can outfit the 10 or so friendly wings that might be in mission. I'm guessing that the system employed in this build only allows the display of 3 wings, starting from Alpha (if there is one) and moving down. Great addition BTW. I might even use this. Is this build based on the fixes implimented in the latest 3.6.5 beta?
-
Hmm, we need the greeke letters of the wings displayed by the names for coolness.

No. Look at the screenshot. It replaces Alpha, Beta, and Gamma with any wings you choose. So you could have Sigma, Tau, and Upsilon (for the not-so-glamorous squadrons) or even Red, Blue, and Grey (for the SWC).Is this build based on the fixes implimented in the latest 3.6.5 beta?
It should be. If it's in CVS, it's in this build.
-
How long can the wing names be, exactly?
-
Up to 32 characters.
-
NICE!!! :O
-
so
"big'ol fancy wing of ubber doom"
would work?
-
Yup, except it might crowd out the other wings on the loadout screen.
You'd gain an extra letter by spelling "uber" correctly. :p Unless you meant to say "utter"?
EDIT: Actually, strike that. The ship name ("Alpha 1") can be 32 characters at most. So the wing name must be slightly shorter.
-
Voila...
The only problem with long wing names is that you have to make sure they don't collide with the wing next to them. :p If this mission had two BOWOUDs, their wing names would overlap.
-
oh my god...
-
Hmm... mabye a tad off topic bit is it possible to loadout a wing with more than 4 craft in it?
-
i think not... you can have wings with more than 4 ships though (up to 8 IIRC)
-
6 grim... at least in vannila FS2..
dunno about SCP..

Sorry, couldn't resist :p
The limit's 6, and it can apply to any non-loadout wing (even those displayed in friendly wings, Delta and Epsilon)
Would this allow you to change the other two "Allied" wings' names too?
-
Beyond the practicalities, I think that we now have the ability to make missions in the vein of the Deus Ex Machina and Just Another Day campaigns even funnier.
Ooh...I just gave myself an idea. Someone should do a mod based on the Sega Genesis video game Zero Wing, you know, the game with CATS and All Your Base are Belong to Us?
;)
I wanna be Zero 1 =D
-
I've been looking for this campain for about two years now, so it's safe to say no one's made one yet.
I'm waiting for some one to prove me wrong...
...
...
well, I'd make the campain myself but I cant fred to save my life.

forgive me for being a n00b when i ask this, i'm new to SCP. how do you rename them? when i ask that, i mean, do you do it in FRED, or from the loadout? Because I wanna name wings REALLY funny names in the main campaign. and do you do the same thing for being...like... Alpha 4, for instance?
[edit] holy crap, i'm re-downloading all the files and my browser's cranking out 10 KB/Sec!
[EDIT2] Happy New Year! So stop drinking booze or you'll be posting baaaad things on teh threads. :D (sorry, couldn't resist  )

There's a new option in the Mission Specs dialog in FRED.
-
:wtf:
-
I would also like to see the ability to configuring more than 4 ships on your wing and/or other wings. Or adding more also be nice if you increased the max number of ships you could have per wing ;)

You can have up to six ships on any wing except the three in the loadout window.

Any wing can have 6 ships its just that when you get to the screen where you start selecting ships and loading them out you can only configure 4 of the 6 ships on your wing. I want it so you can configure all of the 6 ships and/or have the option of adding more.
Sorry if this sounds confusing.........

Sorry. I meant what are you talking about? I just dowloaded it, so i'll see what the hub-bub is about.

:blah:
I believe that this thread is self explanitory.
And before you ask, you need to create a mission from scratch with FRED for it to work. And make sure it's saved in your Freesapce 2/data/missions folder.

I think it is you who are confused.
Any wing can have six fighters. Any wing in the game... EXCEPT the three wings you see on the player loadout screen... typically Alpha, Beta, and Gamma. THOSE wings are limited to four ships.
We can't have more than four ships because the interface doesn't allow it. There isn't room for ships #5 and #6 on the screen, and there isn't any interface art to display them anyway.
-
yeah, i just figgered it out. now, can someone make D3D version of FRED Open? my BRAND NEW video card that SUPPOSEDLY supports OpenGL won't support FRED Open, so i can't use it :( i can only edit events, mission specs, etc. NO FAIR! (at $60 for a viddy, no wonder)
-
Learn to write. I had to read your post three times before I understood what you meant.
No, FRED stays in OpenGL for now. Wait several months or a year and Kazan might finish a new version of FRED.
-
:wtf: that looks pretty comprehensive to me. i looked at it from another persons point of view, if you know what i mean.
[EDIT] oh, i see what you meant by not understanding. i worded that sentence wrong. sorry :D
-
I have to wait that long for a new, improved, fully functional FRED_Open? Curses.
-
I got an odd error warning while testing this out:
-
nm
-
Old error... FS2 never really cares about it though, since half the time if i test something, i'll just place ships, and completely forget about making myself A1... Now that other wings are actually supportd though, its even less of a problem...
Goober: Might change it to say just that the player isn't in a wing, instead of a specific one?
-
But Beta1 isn't a player ship. Also, when I renamed Alpha to "Gold", there was no Wing present in the loadout screen.
I'm probably missing something obvious here......
-
You have to set which wings will show up in the Mission Specs window if i understood right...
EDIT: Hm... Seems i'm wrong...
-

Or there might be a bug in FRED. Post the mission and I'll take a look at it.
-
http://premium1.uploadit.org/magatsu1/missions.rar
I'm probably using the Custom Wingnames tab wrong or something. I found if I reassert Alpha1 as the player (in ships editor), that usually fixes the player fault. The non-exisistant wings in the loadout and ship selection screens (ingame, before mission starts proper) persists though.
-
i can't open the mission.
-
why not ?
It's not a proper mission anyway, just a wing re-name test. No events or anything.
-
*smacks head* i'm such a dope. i need to use the new FRED, don't I?
-
Look at the initial post in this thread for the correct build.
-
i have the right build, i just downloaded it. i just need a D3D version.
-
Roanoke: You never added Skull, Omega, and Silver wings to your mission, that's why they aren't showing up. :p Rename Alpha, Beta, and Gamma if those are the wings you want to use.
As for the error message, I'm not sure what causes it but it might be due to the inconsistent mission. As soon as I saved it with the changed wings it reported no errors.
-
Hmn, so I haved to asign Alpha wing, rename to whatever and adjust in the mission specs ? Whatever, got it now.
