AI, many synthetic fibers, unmanned combat vehicles, electromagnetic shielding, missile defence, laser weaponry, space elevator and genetics are things that have been fiction until the last few decades. I have faith in humanity, after all - our adaptability is so incredible that I believe that one day we will discover FTL travel and find other civilizations. I will be dead when it happens, but still.
