Title: I need some help
Post by: Scorpius on March 31, 2001, 11:54:00 am
I am having computer problems. more specifically with my video cards. I have some outdated crap (Voodoo 2 and Nvidia Riva 128/128ZX) but since I installed Win2k I cannot play any games because all my games require a video card and my PC isnt detecting my Voodoo 2 card. I have tried several times to install drivers for the NVidia card (Its the only one it will detect.) and win2k says that they were installed successfully but when I try to get my games to detect my cards it wont. I have run numerous tests on my computer using DxDiag and detect new hardware and manually detect new hardware but to no avail. I have tried to find the drivers to my voodoo 2 but to no avail. anyone got any suggestions. (Any reasonalbe ones??)

when you install the card are you letting win2k detect everything ("new hardware found blah blah best drivers are...blah") or are you pointing it out and selecting it all?

Unfortunatly I don't have a vodoo card nor win2k, since everything I read about win2k (which is merely windows NT 5) said for a single user it's no better than 98 it's improvements were mostly in the server area.

If you can you might want to re-install 98.

Well I beg to differ :P

I run win 2k also, and I have to say I Love it, since it is based on the NT technology it is much more stable and much faster.

Which is also one problem you might be having. Since it is based on NT, if you have no win2k drivers, you  have to install the NT drivers for your hardware  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) If you install the win 9x drivers...they won't work  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

BTW I also have the rive 128/128zx, with a monster 3d2 voodoo 2 ga  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) SO I know how you are feeling, I purchesed win2k when it was first released, and there weren't even nt drivers for the directx and open gl sides of those cards, so i couldn't run anything either.

The trick is to find the NT drivers, which is still a bit buggy...But I did find Nvidia drivers for my NVidia card. which work great, and allo wme to play games.

Also, this is the buggy part,I found some beta NT Drivers for my voodoo 2 chipset.
Though there was never an NT released version. One problem is, it doesn't show up in your device manager, so I can't remember what drivers they were. But if I remember correctly, I started my search at diamondmm.com ...the people who made the monster cards?

and after tooling around for awhile I did stumble across the NT drivers, which work fine for me, I play all kinds of games all the time that require the 3-d accaleration  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Hope this proves somewhat helpful  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

More stable, yes - but faster? Probably my machine - I have 128mb of RAM and run a P3-500, and on a clean install, Win2k grabs more than 70mb of my RAM without anything loaded. I'm guessing security features.

Well I have a ton of memory for effects work, so what win2k uses as far as memory doesn't bother me...
and all of my design and editing programs run faster and more stable under this OS, I have a dual boot with win98 on it also, (I was using this for awile cause I had to wait for my CDRW manufacturer to make win2k compatible drivers) but ever sinec I solved that problem I haven't used win98 for anything...

I get better performance, and more stability...
I will often have 6 - 700 megs of RAM being used, and never notice any slowdown.

I can understand that, actually. Win2k is a workstation OS, and I like it for that - in fact, I don't remember now, but some of my programs probably ran faster on Win2k too. I must credit Win2k's stability though - I've only ever been able to crash it once.

One thing about stability. In some press releases, Microsoft says 'Win2k is 30 times more stable than Win98SE!' or some stupid number like that. Who makes up those numbers?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/rolleyes.gif)

Btw, just how much RAM do you have? Sounds like a gig.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/eek.gif)

30 times mroe stable eh? Heh no idea how thye come up with that either...

I have been running win2k for almost a year now...(8 or 10 months I think) SInce it was released...can't remember the date  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

I have also crashed it once technically. Not sure exactly how I did it, But I remember deciding not to edit video/export it and have lightwave running a scene at the same time...probably confused the processor something :P

Although, running Starseige Tribes, I do have a problem with lockups...I haven't figured out what yet, but I am sure it has something to do with my vid cards, since changing those settings effects how often and regularly it causes the lockup...which can only be restored by a reset :/

Still working on that problem. Oh yeah, and I can't run Need For Speed 3 Hot Peruit in win2k at all. It's installer says incorrect version of windows...go figure  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

But that is the totallity of all problems I have with the OS...I ussually reboot about once every 2 - 3 weeks. (Unless I am running tribes and it decides I need for me)

But I as far as memory, I am in the process of upgrading my system, and am thinking of going to a gig of RAM...not quite that much right now...next tier down :/

ALso thinking of going to a dual processor system with 1.5 gig processors...not sure yet...have to find out mroe about how Lightwave and my other programs will use it, and if they will take advantage of it. I might just put together a nice PC and then a smaller box PC for network rendering...

we will see how it comes out  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

(I am sick of waiting 15 - 25 hours for a 30 second animation to finish.)
(Course I could cheat and make less complicated scenes with less complicated models and effects, but who wants that?)

Hey Darkshear, where do you get all this money to beef up your system? What do you do for a living?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Well oroginally I was working at Boeing, building real aircraft, worked on parts for Air Force One and prototype space vehicles...
As well as general construction of 737s...
But I got laid off with all the loss of business and cutbacks they have had to deal with lately...

Um, this upgrade is being financed by selling some property I own in southern colorado...

Right now I am spending some time putting together a demo reel and digital work examples, as well as expanding my technical knowledge so I can get a job in the film industry...

I have worked as a directory for cable TV and had some stuff published by PBS years ago on television, as well as a lot of acting, set construction in college...

So I think I should be able to put something together...we shall see  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

****... that's amazing. You never know the types of people you might meet... just through a game  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Okay... so, you got any other models in store for us?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Heh I have several years worth of models,

I have a directory with 68 sub directories containing 7.24 gigs of textures I have created for the models I have made...

when I select my models DIR through windows explorer it makes my computer pause cause it takes so damn long to read everything in the directory :P

I will post some more, but I will pace myself...this isn't my forum  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

So I don't want to abuse it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Or flood it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Does your CPU is an AMD? I have one (athlon), and whatever I tried, I didn't get my voodoo2 to work ( I downloaded drivers from creative to via, but nothing worked). Finally I had to buy a new card...

No they don't have to be win2k drivers...
NT Drivers will work in every case I have found for every peice of hardware or software...

The problem comes in when some card manufacturers don't supply NT drivers because they don't expect anyone to have a gaming system with NT installed on it...
But Luckily almost all have NT drivers, if at least just beta drivers...

So if there are no win2k drivers available, grab the NT drivers...they will do the job  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

You can show us some of your older work, so we can see where you're coming from, experience-wise.
