After seeing c914's gunboat/ship/thing-bigger-than-bomber-smaller-than-cruiser-thing, I sat down and begun modelling the craft design I've had kicking around for about a year. Somehow it's not quite working yet.

There will be two versions. One a civilan light transport, with just a tail turret, and the military version, with heavier armour and shielding, plus the dorsal and ventral gun turrets:D
Can you guess the craft that inspired this?;)
-
Yeah, a Star Trek ship, think its the Defiaint or something like that, well don't watch Star Trak. But, it is really better looking than it.

Just tell me something and I will figure it out: Is it from FS?
[EDIT]Became out-of-date when posted. WeatherOp posted after I started typing the message.
[EDIT2]I guess you would like to get some feedbacl as we;;. ;) The cockpit part is the best so far. Hadn't WeatherOp revealed it to be an inspiration from a Star Trek ship, I would have said it assimilates with the YT-2000 transport from Star Wars.
-
I keep thinking of HW2’s gunship when I look at that model.
-
Thats the thing that jumped out at me, was that cockpit. Looks really good.
-
The bridge looks like an Indy Patcom's or a Dreadnought Class Corvette's, yet the body looks like one of a defiant. the turrets are pretty much how it would look if two fighters were docked onto a Dreadnought Corvette's hull. Yet the tail ages are more indicative of an atmospheric design and purpose, much like the Valkyrie (or whatever that craft was in FS1).
ARGH!! A monster!!! O_O
-
I like it in general but I hate that squashed angular cockpit. Round it out a bit and I'd like the ship a lot more.
-
For no readily identifiable reason, I just don't find this aesthetically pleasing. Dunno why - personal quirks no doubt. I'm sure others will find much to like however.
-
I'm not sure about the overall flatness, but it shows promise.
-
Aaaa now iwe have real FS defiant:nod:
BTW: Nose need more smoth work becouse it doesn't match to rest part of ship
-
Looks like a cross between a Defiant and the patcom from IWar2. :) It's ok, but not very freespace ish, imho. Chunk it up some more, make it look more like a flying box than a squashed pencil.
-
'Tis too flat. Give it some z-axis protruding bits, or make those fins a lot bigger and have them starting from the main hull rather than the engines.
-
tis good
but...
I HATE THE DEFIANT
-
I could see that as maybe being some form of civilian ship in FS. But not military. I don't see that thing as having much armor, yet it has an amazingly surface area. In any serious battle, it would probably draw fire like a magnet.
That said, I like the design.
-
Might as well be used as a transport....
-
Looks like a cross between the Defiant and the Millenium Falcon...
-
the cockpit looks like ****,
the rest of it's great, exept maybe the tail.
-
I wouldn't go that far, but it does look like a dodgy boolean chop 'n' stick. It really needs to blended in with th rest of the ship
-
that looks very familiar... hmm... and not like its from ST either...

Correct!:yes: I was aiming for a Defiant tail and nose, with Falcon central section.

Close. The idea I had was that it began life as a civilian craft, something around the quieter areas during FS2, but after Chapella, the military built a gunship version for escort operations, long range patrols and anti-fighter duties.
Besides, this ship will have shields;7
The tail is incomplete really, and I'm not sure about the engines (the engines are what has been keeping this craft on the drawing board for so long. I just can't seem to get a setup that I like!).
The nose defiently needs work, but so far I've yet to get a decent smooth form:sigh:
God, it does look bad head on!:ick:

:bump:
Yes I know its a mega bump, but I've only really got round to acting on peoples comments.
I've removed to old engines and the nose (AFTER making a copy!)
and have begun to remodel it. I've got two new noses. One is following the Defiant trend, the other is based on the Space Shuttle.

I've also begun to rethink the engines (again:sigh: ) and have had thoughts about adding wings, slightly downward slanted.

Thing is, that setup makes the side docks pointless, since the wings get in the way...
Maybe bobs submodel rotn thingy could help.....
Comments please.

I think the wings look good. You could angle the dockpoints upwards slightly (so they're more perpendicular to the wings), or turn them into turrets or something.
With regard to the cockpit - I think the biggest problem is the big gap around it. It deosn't look right. You need to have a smooth transition rather than a hole in the hull with the cockpit sticking out. I prefer the angular one, but it needs to be as wide as the smooth one, and joined properly as I said.
Good stuff - please finish it. :)
