You need to start making skyboxes. Now.

Yeah, I can understand that grades stuff. As long as a maintain above a C in all my classes, I'm safe from my parents.

Well since I've basically lost all knowledge of what exactly a skybox is...
How do I make one?

My parents are christmas shopping so I might have some time :)

Last time I heard...
I thought those wouldn't work

Anyway, Give me a format, a size, and someone to try it out.

And I'll throw something together.

EDIT:  Yes all photoshop

Format = Targa or Jpeg (Preferrrably Targa for me :D )
Size = as large as my card supports. Is that 4096x4096 I think?  Either way, it'll be applied to a sphere, or a box, so make it work right! :p
Title: Nebula Scenes... In 1 day!!!
Post by: jdjtcagle on December 18, 2004, 10:57:39 pm
Alright!

;)

BTW, I'm making it 4096*4096 so if you want it a different size speak up :)

Post by: Taristin on December 18, 2004, 11:31:35 pm
Well, the larger the better, since it'll be stretched gigantically.

What would be ideal would be one extremely large image, like 16kx16k and then cut into 4 parts, to be mapped onto a single object, so that the stretching would be less apparent. But I'll settle for whatever you give us. :)

This thing is huge!!!

So, should we leave out Planets?
All we really want is nebula, stars, dust, ect.

Methinks that nebulae are rarely stretched out all that much in any one direction - at least, not without looking stretched out.

Technically great work, but realistically still leaves something to be desired. ;)

don't go for 4096x4096

1-most cards don't go over 2048x2048

2-to map a sphere you need a map with the lenght double of the height (so it would be 4096x 2048 at least)

IMO it is better to learn the very basics of uvmapping in Lithunwrap and converting to FS in order to create a skybox, since there are different techniques to map a sphere, depending by what you want to obtain. For example, it is possible to use more than 1 map (suggested).
It isn't difficult to learn but you need to know the basics of uvmapping in Lithunwrap, how to create a sphere and flip the faces (you can do that both in Lith and TS) and how to set a hierachy in Truespace in order to convert a model.

My first Highlight! WOOT!!

Karma: Noted :)

Marauder:  I'll check it out sometime.

FreeTerran:  Greg Martin tutorials and just playing around for the planets, stars, dust.  I made the nebula by adapting my own technique and the rings I found here (http://www.tutorialoutpost.com/count/639).

I took my first set of test today and must study for my second set tonight.  So, I'll have to work on them after school tomorrow, since I'm alloweed on the computer on my break ;)

Yeah, i'd sure like to see that bottom one as a skybox.

Are there a lot of completed skyboxes? are planets/moons only showable via a skybox? is there a list of really sexy ones?

Yeah, i'm a n00b. I have more of a problem finding things than anything else, since there are like no "if you want a pretty FS2_open, download these additional things" menus or lists.  Maybe we at HLP should make one...

Ashrak:  Nope ;)

I got the basic starfield, dust, and nebula laid down.
Once I get the nebula complete, I'll hand it over to somebody.  Screw trying and learn UV mapping.  I've tried moddeling and texturing and nobody especially me liked the results :p
Anyway, I don't want to learn it.

*BTW, I've noticed something disturbing, Anon isn't really an Admin, is he?  I mean it was just something to get him to shut up about it, right?

Very nice, including some of the pics you provided after these two...  One note though:
http://img148.exs.cx/img148/8291/untitled115ww.jpg

I think this one needs little work.  The cloud edges are too unrealistic.  They need to be more clumped less smudged.  Other then that, the works is absolutely fantastic.

Well, I've finally got the second computer doing what it's supposed to be doing...

Getting there with the HyperVoxels, but they'll improve with practice ;)

Funny thing is, they look like gliteratto nebs. :p

hehe Yep, 'frilly edges'...

It's because I made the procedural gradient inside the Voxel waaay too small, I'm still practising, but my latest one is looking a little less 'hairy' ;)

This is lightwave? I've not seen anyway to make voxels or hypervoxels in 3dmax, yet...

Yep, they are quite useful once you get the hang of them, but take a bloody age to render :(

hypervoxel = max particles, but somewhat better ( max isn't great at that kind of stuff )

has anyone considered puttin a mini freespace battle in these pictures? like a planet and/ornebula and in the foreground a big engagement between shivan/GTVA battlegroups? i think it'd look cool...duno if any1 else would...unfortunatly i cant make such equisite work
