Title: Antialiasing
Post by: WMCoolmon on December 19, 2004, 03:15:34 pm
I don't want to excite anyone, but is there any possibility of getting Antialiasing working properly with NVidia cards? I can't (really) use it, but it can make a lot of quality difference when it's used.

If it's broken for ATI cards, this goes double - smoothed models would look lots better.

(I'm using a GF4 MX440 with either the most or the next most recent drivers, but it hasn't worked for a LONG time.)

I think there may have been some special process to enable it. I'm not sure if that works anymore or what it was, though.

Since I got my 6800 all my AA problems are history.

Somehow I can use AA without problems now. (Without GF fix.)

Forceware 71.20 (not sure)

Edit: Uhm, sorry looks like I was wrong. There are still some glitches, but I didn't notice them in-game. Look at the 'goal' interface part to the left.

The stars in the background used to be barely visible with AA. Is it still that way?

Yeah, it's weird. They are very visible when I turn my fighter to any direction, but are almost not visible when I don't touch the controls.

This one has been in the technical section of the FAQ for ages. It dates back as far as FS1 IIRC.

Quote
WHEN I PLAY FREESPACE OR FREESPACE 2 THE STARS DISAPPEAR WHEN I'M MOVING/TURNING. THEY REAPPEAR WHEN I'M STILL

This is another antialiasing problem. As with the previous two problems the solution lies in editing the registry. This time you want to follow the same procedure for a DWord called D3DLineOffset.

That said I don't think it's that good an idea to mess around with the registry unless the SCP guys say that this setting doesn't have any other effect.

I play with 4xAA set in the launcher and it works good for me,
but i get cursor-slowdowns when a popup (i.e. "Do you realy want to quit") appears.

I am wondering if AA is working on Radeon 9700 Pro. I do not notice any difference with or without it (except the interface glitches while using AA)

Small comparison:

No AA (http://www.overlords-from-hell.de/aa-off.jpg)

 4x AA in Launcher (http://www.overlords-from-hell.de/4xaa.jpg)

4x AA in launcher + 8xS AA in driversettings (http://www.overlords-from-hell.de/8xsaa.jpg)

1. I have no possibility to select AA*4 in the launcher settings, it supports only 2x full screen antialising
2. the effect of anti aliasing is minimal

Also, it may be not the right place to post this, but it is a similar bug anyway. Glow maps do not function properly at a certain distance. They may fade in and out or exhibit intermittent flickering effects.
