Title: making ships turn without roll
Post by: firehawk777 on April 04, 2001, 05:58:00 pm
What i mean is does anyone know whether there is a way to make a ship turn without rolling to the side eg a car turning a corner Vs a plane rolling to the side.
Im pretty sure its something to do with the rot or rotdamp in the ships table
Am i right?????

Not those two things. If I'm not mistaken, those control the rate at which your fighter loses speed? I'm not sure.

And why do you want a fighter/bomber to turn without rolling? Any specific reasons?

[EDIT] If you want to know more about what each specific entry in the ships.tbl file do, go to FreeSpace Watch -> Modding section ("http://freespace.volitionwatch.com/fs2/mods"). It will explain most of them.

Ah...they do this because people feel wrong turning straight to the side without rolling some. I sure do...in fact, I have Roll bound to the X-axis and Yaw bound to the Twist axis on my Precision Pro 2...I prefer flying the ships like they're jets.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) I go so far as to always roll such that when turning towards my target, it's always above me- unless, of course, I'm in a ship where yaw is faster than pitch(Ulysses, for example.)

As for getting rid of that roll, I don't think you can- sorry.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)

Well, for some reason, I wanted to ask the same thing... damn  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif). And I suppose there's no way to make the fighter "slide"? like you cxan make it face a direction, and it goes there only once you pushed a key or something like this?

Nope...definitely not sliding. The way sliding is implemented in most games, however, I think that that's a good thing.

You can TRY editing the Damp factor in ships.tbl entries, but be warned- make it very big at all, and it gets really buggy. If you want to know what I mean, set it to about 100 and fly a mission. Or TRY to fly a mission...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)
