It hasn't become much better in-game, but I will keep it.

Without the maps it looks super-detailed, but it suffers the same fate as many high-poly ships; that the improvements get lost when the textures are applied. The only think I could suggest is making the greebling larger and more pronounced.
I love the model, but I fear the curse here, as in many cases, is the textures.

I think spec should help, coz there's pronounced angles between each plate, so the lightplay should be visible. Anyway, the details are already most exagerated ( see unmapped pic... ), and, finally, that's why I said it was useless to release it. Now that I have, don't come and complain about that :doubt:

its useless....unless LS/Dabrain can make hi-res textures for it! :D

Yeah, seeing it in-game with spec should definitely help the details become more noticeable. For example, Bob's Herc looks way better in game with the light shining on all the little bits and pieces. Thats the case with most fighers IMHO.

Those shots are using the 512*512 texture in lightspeeds shine package.

It would look good if we had the dynamic shadows and lighting. Then all those raised bumps Nico (ALMOST called you venom :D) put in would cast shadows on the hull.

you can see a diference in game, while it's moveing, it's an improvement, better than nothing at least.

512 ram is just enough to run FSO well, more ram would be a good thing, though it sounds more like your card is the problem.

I'm afraid I don't like it too much. Basically the detail is added in a nice way, but it's QUITE overdone. The ship's shape is not really flowing anymore, the plates raised to extreme levels. It's good, but it's just "too much".

I wonder if youwould have said the same w/o the first pic. When everybody says it's barely noticeable too. And that shape flow thing is bull, look at the ingame shots :doubt:
But as you never like anything, well :p

It actually looks better in the first shot than ingame. I looked at it in the techroom and it's just... weird. It's not "barely noticeable", but rather the Mara is barely noticeable under all that stuff.
And that I never like anything is untrue. :p

It looks awesome without maps, but the textures just aren't sharp enough. I think DaBrain and Lightspeed should make 1024x1024 textures for the Mara just to do this model a little justice.

Actually, I have to agree with lighty, too. It looks butcherred to me.

Light, try it ingame, like actualy in the game. It looks quiute amazing when the mara does its weird rolly thing (when your up to the sie of it at close range)
Though i agree it could be too much, and too many polies. I say scrap the thre extrusions that aree on the 'lit part' only

But I stand on my opinion that Lightspeed never likes anything :p

I love how Nico refused to relese this for years because he hated itm and now, after years an years of people begging him he releses it and people are complaining.

And I was half thinking of doing a high poly orion with fighter style maps, guess it's not worth the hassle :p

As I have already stated I HAVE tried it ingame, and i'm glad Raa here agrees with me. As a matter of fact I really like most of your models Nico (Where's that hi-poly Manticore, anyway? :D ).
Back when you refused to release it I understood why.

The manticore? It's sitting on my HD, actually, and it was about done, but I was making it from scratch, so it doesn't have any UV mapping, and now I don't do high poly models that way anymore, so I will never finish it.
