Title: RELEASE - Shrouding the Light: Origins
Post by: Blaise Russel on December 24, 2004, 05:56:29 pm
Alright, here's your present. Try not to unwrap it straight away, if you can't hold out until Christmas proper.

Merry Christmas, all.

SHROUDING THE LIGHT

A year has passed since the destruction of the Lucifer and the flight of the Shivan armada. In the year 2336, the Terran and Vasudan peoples attempt to reclaim their former empires and piece together their shattered lives. However, dissidents and splinter groups from within jeopardise their hopes of peace - fighting for independence or against hated alien foes. In the midst of all this turmoil, you are transferred, from the safety of the 1st Battlegroup of Vasuda to the 13th Battlegroup's PVD Guardian and the troubled hotspot of Deneb...

And yet, but a few days before...

(...we see the true depths of Imutef's truth-spinning.)

SHROUDING THE LIGHT: ORIGINS

The PVN Directorate has issued an order to Admiral Imutef, commanding officer of the PVD Pinnacle, that three of his pilots must transfer to the Guardian and the 13th Battlegroup, for the sake of improving their combat experience. With the assistance of his aide, Officer Zahur, the Admiral examines the histories of three pilots - Ensign Khem, Ensign Tet and, of course, yourself...

WHAT IS NEEDED

WinRAR or similar unzipping utility

Shrouding the Light VP (BR_STL.vp) (http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/sbre/stl/BR_STL.rar)

FSPort main VP (fsport2_3.vp), also the FS1 music VP (fs1_warble.vp)

Lightspeeds Set 3 and Set 6 nebulae (green and blue)

Lightspeed's new Weapon Effects

Optional - Shrouding the Light Voiceacting VP (BR_STLv.vp) (http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/sbre/stl/BR_STLv.rar)

WHAT TO DO

Place the nebulae files in the data/effects folder

Place the VP files in the main FS2 directory

Start up the game, create a new pilot, select either of the two campaigns and enjoy!

I have no idea/can't be bothered finding out why the Leviathan doesn't always appear, so if you suffer from a vanishing Piranha:

Not a problem. :D

Anyway, it is officially Christmas from where I'm standing, so: Merry Christmas (again). :)

And now I'm going to bed. Do provide feedback, since I may be able to fix things I've forgotten in time for the HLP birthday...

Maybe not, at this juncture. I keep having new ideas for awesome campaigns 'n' things and forgetting about... that... the campaign, the one before... uh...

Anyway, STLO is a prequel (the new campaign part of it is, at any rate) but it jumps around a bit...

A few things:

- You'll need a version of FSO with Goober's new SEXPs for the cinema things.

- I make no assurances for the quality of the voiceacting.

- Don't expect perfection... let's just say I'm waiting for lab results to get back.

are the effects absolute requirements or do they just make the campaign a lot better.  (it may seem a stupid question but I have not downloaded "required" files before and played campaigns)

If you don't include Lightspeed's nebulae and weapons, then you won't see the mission backgrounds and weapons fire. Apparently, it's very difficult to dogfight when you can't see your own lasers.

And if you don't get the fs1_warble VP, then you won't hear any music.

(Not getting the fsport VP will mean the campaign won't run as it won't find the necessary models and things.)

You won't be able to play a lot of campaigns then.  But since it's Christmas, I'll direct you to a mirror on Sectorgame (http://www.sectorgame.com/f2s/files/projects.php).  Have fun. :)

And BR, you need to update the mission count in your sig. ;)

OK, this is more of an FSO problem, but I'd like to see how many people encountered this.  During the redux of STL, BR used new features to completely remove the HUD for cutscene missions.  However, I noticed that when beginning the mission just after the terran rebels cutscene, the hud was missing.  I aborted the mission and restarted, and the same thing occured.  I was beginning to think that BR had accidentally added in the HUD removal command, but when I aborted the mission and quit Freespace, then restarted the game and tried it again, the HUD was back.  It would seem that the HUD removal command is being passed over onto the next mission.  Now, I didn't notice it after the first cutscene mission, but I was experiencing some other difficulties with my system at the time and aborted right after the reading the briefing, so I don't if it would've occured then or not.  I was using the updated build of the FSO 365 release build.  I haven't tried this with any previous build.  So, basically this campaign should work with any build since Goober's 11-06 build?

D'oh.

I had thought that the hide-hud sexp would not be carried over to the next mission... evidently, I thought wrong.

But not a problem! Fixed. (http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/sbre/stl/BR_STL.rar)

By the by, did anyone have a problem with training messages being displayed twice? Like, one darker training-message-plaque superimposed on a lighter one that's slightly higher up?

I don't think it's a big problem, per se, but still...

You need a newer version of FSO - one that includes Goober's new SEXPs, to be precise.

Perfect excuse to get 3.6.5!

(After several colourful expressions, worthy of Ozzy Osbourne)
I have checked and checked, all the files are present and correct, got latest version of Open, the cut-scene works (oh, already very good) but for some reason some models are missing as in the first mission 'proper' all I see is Ullysses.  Sorry to turn you all into glorified IT assistance, but I really am no good at any of this.

Do you have any table files in the data folder?

Or any other mod's VP files? Stuff other than the FSO stuff, the STL files and the FSPort VP?

I noticed that the ships.tbl included here flags the Leviathan model as "cruiser01b.pof". It should be "cruiser01x.pof" to work with the Media VPs. The Leviathan was invisible until I made this change.

The FSPort VP contains a cruiser01b.pof, so it shouldn't matter either way.

hmm.. i have the Problem that the Levithan IS invisible..  i have all STL VP's and the two FSPort VP's installed.. i can only see the Engine of the Leviathan and can't destroy it, because all my Missles and Lasers go through it :(

And yes, i have all SCP 3.6.5 VP's and the 3.6.5 EXE

Deepstar,  I had to edit the ships.tbl in BR_STL.vp and change the Leviathan pof to cruiser01x.pof. Then it was fine.

Remove those table files from the data folder.

The LS weapon effects contain a ships table that enables the new weapons in the FS2 ships, but doesn't contain the FS1 ships (the Anubi and everything) - and, because of its position in the folder structure, overrides the BR_STL VP and its table files.

So you need to move those files somewhere else. I probably should have included a readme or something... my fault, my fault...

I'm looking into the Leviathan dealie.

Same here.  Really, there's not much more I can say other than what I said for the original STL release, except that voice acting makes it all the better.  It would have been nice to have the Vasudan translator on top of the untranslated voice, but I can understand the difficulty in voicing that many lines. ;) Terrific work.

One thought I had would have been to use text-to-speech and then record this and record it over the vasudan voice.  It'd then sound alot like the mono-tone translations from FS1.  Someone might counter this saying "why don't you just use the in-game text-to-speech?", but this will only work if there is no accompanied voice file (in this case, the vasudan speech).  In addition, when you use voice files, the game will wait until the file (and/or ani. if its a CB) is done playing before switching to the next stage.  Stage switching won't wait for a text-to-speech to finish.  It gets cut off very often.

Later!

Sorry to bump a thread, but I'm desperate.

I cannot locate lightspeed's background nebulae anywhere (They are no longer on his website), and they are required to play 'Shrouding the Light', in addition to looking really snazzy. I'm assuming most people already have the nebula background sets, but I've been out of the HLP loop for a long time, and I missed em.
Can anyone help me out? Is there a site that I missed, or can someone post them for me?
