What compression do you guys use for the files. Do you use RAR, if you don't would it be possible to put Zip AND Rar files up for download. I don't think my connection could stand another ~136MB download for Release 2.
-
I'm pretty sure it will end up being over 90 MB no matter what format is used.
-
We'll be using the installer format we used for r1 most likely, as the installation has options this time for high res dds stuf.f
I can put that in a self extracting rar file, but it won't compress much more.
It really depends on how we decide to distribute it, which we won't know till all the mods are finalised.
-
This is gonna sound really dumb, but i remember once having a download that had been ZIPed, then the ZIP was ZIPed, then again, and again, and again...I had to unzip about 6 ZIP's in order to reach the files.
Again, i know that's a dumb idea, but it was a thought.
-
That'll actually increase the filesize. So yes, it is a dumb idea.
-
hmm... ive gotten taht to work before :) i dont know how, but i did... LOL
-
It's highly unlikely that you did (although Zip compression is single pass so it could be possible)
-
It is possible sometimes to zip a zip for a slight size decrease, however I've heard of people having more extraction problems the more times an archived is archived into another.
I don't use zip format anyway, rar is far better :)
-
Ja.
-
Compression can only go so far.
-
IDEA!
Rar----goes into-------zip----goes into-------Rar----goes into-------Zip etc.
-
Somehow, I don't think that's going to be much of an improvement...
-
BTW
Yes, I did completely ignore Kosh's post.

that won't work and it would be really annoying

Despite the fact that I'm right and you're wrong.

most of the time if i try to compress something more than once windows starts yelling at me. *slaps windows* NO! BAD windows! NO biscuit!
-
If you're trying to compress something more than once, you deserve to be yelled at. You're only increasing the chances of data corruption, and you're making the file larger with every extra pass.
-
i just wanted to find out what happened :)
-
Try it. :p
-
the only proper way to "double compress" is an mp3 in a zip or a jpg in a rar or somthing akin to that.
-
Then can we flame kietotheworld for posting a suggestion that was already shot down?
*lights flamethrower just in case* :D
-
no, at least not in here :p
