Meh, got a 180 GB external USB 2.0 HD for €75. Ten of those is cheaper and almost twice as much. And also, it's about 3 times smaller then that thing. So ten of the ones I have won't even take up that much room. And this one is helluva fast as well.

Sorry, not impressed. NEXT!

:p

It seems i can't edit my posts so i'll just post it in a new post;

EDIT: It was 2 times smaller, not 3. My bad. But still it ain't worth my money.

They are nice drives, the 1TB was a bit more than I needed, so I bought the 320GB

Oh, and Firewire 800 > pretty much everything, except those mad Ultra SCSI drives....

I always try and think ahead....;7

But, anyway, having a full backup of everything is reassuring....

CACHE: 8mb

It holds 976562500 MB and it only has an 8MB cache?

I noticed that at first too... It can't just donate some couple hundred megs to it at least?

Nice bragging rights though... "can I download everything from the LAN FTP? Yes, yes I think I can."

I just backed up my B drive to it - 20,000 files, 9.5GB - 5 minutes.

I don't really care about the cache.....

Prefetching 8MB data on a external drive.... why the comments guys? It's hardly going to be intended for use for running a game's swap space off.

Why would anyone need that kind of space, to have every game in the world? I barely use 40gb.
Title: Thats a LOT of space...
Post by: Hippo on December 26, 2004, 07:41:13 pm
Actually, it'd be great for video capture, as you could write directly to it uncompressed, and then work from that...

Pfft. I could do that with my 160Gb SATA drive. :p

[color=66ff00]At this point you no longer need to go to a LAN party, the LAN party comes to you.

Hard disk cache isnt comprised of disk space. Its RAM. When the power goes off, it gets wiped. If you look at the circut board on the bottom of  an internal drive you can see the modules. Why the hell would you put a few hundred megs of ram on a hard drive anyway? For one, transfer rates arent to the point that it would be able to fill that up ever, and two, thats more than some computers have.

I'm fully aware of what cache on a hard drive is.  I was just commenting that with a total storage space of that volume, an 8MB cache seemed a bit small to get any kind of performance.

Irrelevant. HDD's cache size need to be relative to the computer's performance - primarily the data transfer interface speed (ATA, SATA, Firewire 400/800, etc). So while 1,000GB is a ginormous amount of data, the speed at which you can access that data is still quite limited by the transfer rate of the HDD and the interface it's connected by. As long as there are no quantum leaps in that speed, there's no need to have quantum leaps in HDD cache.

Say what you will, the fact is that Macs have far, far more style than a PC. OSX is easily on par with the newest versions of Windows. I prefer my taskbar and quick launch to the launch pad, but at least Mac is showing some innovation and creativity.

Anywho, everything I've read agrees that Macs have a leg up on PCs when it comes to floating point calculations, but PCs are generally much better rounded. The graphics and video software you can get with them is very nice (Compare iMovie to practically any entry-level PC move making utility and you'll find that iMovie is simply easier to use.)

I've gone a long way past these arguments, so each to thier own.

I bought my first comp in 1988, it happened to be a Mac, because I managed to wangle an educational discount.  If I'd bought a PC, then I would possibly be arguing on the other side.  But the point is that it doesn't really matter....

Macs vs PC; who really gives a ****?  Buy what you like, whine about it if you don't like it, just don't ****ing whine about the ****ing machine you didn't even buy.

You don't hear people whining 'oh, Fords are ****e.  I've never driven one, don't own one and don't want one, but they're still ****e.  Buy a Peugeot instead'.  It's daft... anyone who really cares enough to argue over it, needs a good kick in the gizzards.

Thorn, do you understand the concept of sarcasm?  I wish PCs had half the style of Macintoshes.  The only fault I can find with Macs is that they lack in the software dept., specifically games.

macs use too much propritary hardware and don't fit with the standardsa of regular PCs (hence why the are macs and not PCs)

what apple should do is open there standards and write an OS for an x86 procesor, and make it so someone could slowly turn there PC into a mac.

Was there ever any effort made to port FS2 to our mac brethren? They really do deserve a classic like that.  Of course, I'm not a dev, so I have not idea if it would even be possible or not.

Back on topic: I almost bought 2 x 250 gig drives, but after seeing that beast, I'm kinda glad I didn't. Maybe I'll just get a decent DVD burner instead, since they're so cheap.

Yes, I'm quite aware of the concept of sarcasm. I don't know if you have noticed this or not, but its a bit difficult to convey any tone or emotion with messages over the interweb. If you're trying to be sarcastic, next time try using a smile or something to say "Hey, I'm joking". Otherwise, people will take your words at face value. Why wouldnt they? You gave them no indication otherwise.

I just promised myself I wouldn't get into this again, but.....

My G5 has bog-standard DDR400 RAM, Seagate SATA drives, standard PCI slots, 8XAGP, and runs Samsung monitors from a nVidia FX5200.  Oh, and Wacom, Logitech mice, Gravis gamepad, and Wingman Joystick on the USB...

The ONLY thing not standard is the processor/mobo, and the nVidia card (they do something to the flash memory to make the PC ones incompatible)

Games are a problem, I'll be the first to admit, but I have an X-Box, so it's not so bad.  The one thing that did annoy me on that side was the cancellation of Half-Life (they ditched the Mac port half way through developement)

But the usual games do appear, Halo, Quake, Jedi Academy, MOHAA, COD, Indiana Jones, ROTK, Neverwinter Nights, WOW, etc.  No Freespace sadly....

As for software:

Browsers: Camino, Firefox, IE, Mozilla, Safari
Creative GoLive CS, Illustrator CS, InDesign CS, Photoshop CS, Acrobat Pro 6, Macromedia Freehand 10
Media: Quicktime Player, RealPlayer, Window Media Player
Office: Excel, Word, Powerpoint, Entourage
Chat: MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, iRC etc.
3D: Lightwave, Strata 3D, Blender
Apple stuff: iMovie, iDVD, iPhoto, iTunes

So, I get by....

BTW:

I like my small speakers, they fit on the desk...

I know for a fact that the processors used in Macs (i.e. all them) are a ****load better designed than PC processors (i.e. x86); also weren't macs the first to use proper 64 bit registers a couple of processor generations ago?
