I was wondering, what are some Campaigns that has been(or will soon be) released with character story elements(or in other words, wingmen that doesn't seem to go below 1% Hull Integrity every mission haha)
I've played Homesick and Sync.(Both very good Campaigns in their own respects, check if out if you haven't already)"
-
Try Shrouding the Light and Shrouding the Light: Origins. Both are excellent and have very good character development.

I'm working on one with characters, but it wont be released for a LONG time :(
-
BWO will when it comes out
-
ITHOV would have had Characters.....
Thinking into the Character term, I can state that the Journey to Epsilon Pegasi also has a Character for Alpha one. He is a Lieutenant who ws court-martialled for an accident. There are two other Characters in it: the Captains of the two large ships: Captain Boldera and Caterer.
-
Only campaign I've played that had a character element to them was Derelict...
Good ol' Duct Tape Mackie. ;)
-
Derelict and Characters? Are you sure?
-
Derelict only had the Mackie guy, who always complained. And some unnamed Alpha 2 + 3 who tended to complain about Mackie if I remember.
-
i liked mackie...:nervous:
-
158th is heavy on characters. If i can get someone to help out with that department (hint hint) i would love to do something like that with Origins.
-
Derelict may have only had Mackie, but, damn straight, he was the best, negative character in all of Freespace 2! ;)

haha true that
-
I've yet to make up my mind how useful having distinct named characters would be, compared to being another anonymous pilot amongst others......
-
It depends on how well bekieveable the characters are made...if done well it can have a huge impact whether Alpha2 is flowing near your or that guy you went to Acadamey with and that helped you out here and there.
If characters are good you can make the player create some emotional bond to him, making missions more interesting and complex, since you don't want to loose them and aditionally have to keep them alive too.

especially women pilots ;7

That's usually all there is. As for keeping them alive, I like the idea, but usually that can be done with simple SEXP editing, ala Derelict.
-
Alpha 2 and Alpha 3 have individual characters, but they don't develop, in Cleaning Crew. One's cocky, one's thoughtful. You figure out which is which.

The issue for me is story.... I can have individual personas mentioning parts of their history, or other things that have happened, to fruther the storyline; but my worry is that you can overload the player with details if you're also developing other characters (especially if you already have a lot of exposition).
fortunately, i tend to delegate this sort of precise issue to FREDers. :D

Mackie: my flight panel is secured by a wad of duct tape...
or was it something like that?
i love that other one when you first encounter mercs flying perseuses :D
-
there's also homesick, but the characters don't die until the very last mission, and only Alpha 1 and Beta 4 survive, IIRC.

Correction: "Piece of junk is one thing, I've got a wad of duct tape holding my control panel together." :D
-
Homesick, Shrouding the Light, and Derelict, IIRC, are the main ones that have been released. And use the spoiler tags, Cobra. Don't just mention
that certain people die at the end of one of the campaigns.
-
what? we've all played them.
-
Not all of us. And it spoils things for any newbies that come along and read the thread later.
-
What the hell? My post jumped up two places?? :wtf:
EDIT: and again. Admins might want to make some corrections. Above post should be after cobra's "we've all played them" comment.
-
I didn't finish it because of one obscenly hard mission that made me get bored of repeteating it time and time again.:p Thankyouverymuch then!:p
As for characters, let's sum it up as for my projects. [generally, they progress sloooooowly, since I write actual books, and so, have little time. They're mostly story by now, and when I have the story planned out carefully, I'll go to FREDding]
1.Legion - a [very] short campaign about Shivans, their legacy and how GTVA is doomed! DOOOOMED! It revolves around a bunch of SOC pilots stuck inside a system that is going to hell when Shivan legacy comes knocking. Characters are present, but there isn't much room for development because of few missions that will be in it.
2.CCCP - one psychotic Soviet Commissar is the main featuring character. He and his killswitch, that he uses frequently and liberally. Taking "Alpha 1's wingmen blow up fifteen seconds into mission" to a completly new, literal, level.
3.FS:SHMUP - Fidel Castro. No, I am not joking. [and for that one, I'm making table mods and new models already]
EDIT: oh, the same SN [no revealing!] officer will appear in a few missions, mostly combatting uncooperative FS engine.
"CURSE THAT DRAW DISTANCE! CUUUUURSE IT!"
4.Red Tide - Alpha 1 and Command, since the entire campaign is a game between the two of those. The rest is the support cast.
Generally, I must say that I prefer characters, and so use them. It's far more realistic. [and much more fun]

*cough cough*TVWP*cough cough*.

what the hell? no my post was moved down a page! WTF?
-
cobra...shut up...no...not everyone has played them...I haven't.
so stop trying to tell everyone that they've played them...

Quite true. I'm well behind at the moment. Haven't played Sync, STL or any of the other campaigns released recently. I tend to avoid their threads so that I don't get spoiled which means that I get annoyed when someone gives away plot points without a need to do so.
-
ive played very few campaigns, cobra! GAH! great... now ive gone and screwed over homesick for myself by reading that... *walks out of room fuming*
-
sorry. :D
truce?
Besides, I'm making a 3 mission campaign about kappa wing getting lost in the nebula. :D (No, it's not part of my other campaign, I just have some spare time).
-
Well, then quit being an arese and edit that from your post. I, myself haven't played just about any campaign recently. And should I get back into it, you've already just ruined one for me. So stop it.
And fix that first post.

I want to hurt Cobra........ please! :hopping:
-
actually his idea in the spoiler has merit. Kappa wing wasn't heard from again, it would be interesting to be part of that wing and play out what may have happened to them. Of course....you better make it a good story. ;)
-
will do. :D and kappa wing wasn't heard from again, that is only about 95% true. Kappa 3 makes it to the testing site where alpha is testing the Tag-A missile. of course, he never makes it out of the battle. shame, then we would've learned about the ravana sooner, then we wouldn't have lost the two corvettes. (I forgot their names)
[EDIT] I will be testing the campaign myself, and if there are any, I will try to work out the bugs in naming the player wing "Kappa", since I'm using retail FRED. I don't use SCP versions because they keep crashing all the time. and, 3.6.5 doesn't show me the ships and stuff, so I'm left with editing the mission specs and stuff.
[EDIT 2] Also, I'm "dusting off" FRED. I don't use it except setting up framework for pecenipicek. so, don't expect anything too flashy, k?
-
Actium and Lysander...
And I only ever lost one of them.
-
ah, thx. and i haven't played the original campaign for a while, i've been playing other campaigns.
-
*watches as cobra's post count nears mine*
-
don't worry...most of Cobra's post are spam..Off-topic...or.......anything note very constructive... [EDIT: i have just realized that we both registered in November 2004...and Cobra doubles my post count]
The [EDIT: FS2!!, not FS1] Main Campaign had little character development...and it was good..............the only things i remember about pilots talking about themselves are: In the mission when you must defend the bastion some pilot (female?) says that her grandfather died during the Great War fighting the (taranus?)......and............................nothing more, i think.
-
*watches as Cobra's post count nears his*
;)
-
hey, a lot of my posts are on topic, and i'm involved in a lot of conversations.
i haven't played the main fs1 campaign either. but, i think all she said was "My grandfather died in the Great War" or something like that.
[EDIT] willy, you're thinking of the cain, taranis.
Raa: you have 8000 posts. i won't be able to catch up with you,
-
The exact quote is
My grandfather served on the Bastion in the Great War. He died in Sirius, fighting the SC Tantalus.
It's confusing because they made a mistake. It should be the SD Tantalus.
-
There are a lot of mistakes in both FS games: Remember the jump node from Earth to Deneb from one FS1 Command Briefs?

Actually we would, IIRC the Ravana had already been wasted and Kappa 3 was raving about the Sathanas.
BTW You can even order Kappa 3 to depart in that mission
-
I actually wanted to write something here, but edited in haste because I do not want to be tactless. :)

i knew it was the sathanas! i just kind of doubted myself. the ravana was originally the sathanas, btw. I'm doing the middle mission first, so i can figure out how I'm going to do mission 1. but, I think I've got everything planned. mission 2: half done.
-
the ravana was originally the sathanas, btw.
Eh? What are you talking about.
-
What was Kappa talking about? the Ravana or the Sathanas?...i think the Ravana...
-
I think Cobra was trying to say that he got the Ravana and Sathanas mixed up.
Anyway Kappa 3 goes on his little panic attack in SM2-01, the Ravana appears in SM1-06 and gets destroyed in SM1-07. Unless he's a victim of time travel, I think its safe to say he was talking about the Sathanas.
-
lol...time travel...........
thanks, anyway...
it's been a long time since last time i played FS2 main campaign...
-
i meant i originally put in a sathanas.
kappa 3 was raving that there was something in the nebula.
[EDIT] it's insanely possible that kappa wing was involved in some sort of temporal time vortex...
-
sorry for throwing the thread off topic. But thanks guys for the inspiration to create characters of depth. That now falls on the shoulders of an able stff member for Origins. If we want to continue the discussion about the Ravana/Sathanas/kappa/temporal anomoly/panic/not panic but instead heart racing shortness of breath loud voice quick pulse attack....maybe we should open another thread for it?
-
Sucks to be whoever this aforementioned staff member is. ;)
Getting back toward on-topicness...
Since most of the campaigns with characters have already be mentioned, I'll just throw my $0.02 in.
I'm making one with quite a few characters, however its a real pain to make it all work. You have to find a way to let them develop. You can't have them talk for too long or else the player might get bored of it. Keeping them alive is another thing, of course you can say they ejected. Making sure that their personalities are unique is another one.
But I think the result is well worth it, it really makes you feel like you know the people you're with. So then you can be really evil and kill some guy off and the player will hate you forever. :drevil:
-
WARNING: This spoiler is about my campaign. I am willingly giving you a sneek peak of my campaign
That's kind of what my real campaign holds. There will be a choice to either join the enemy, or to stay with the good guys. kinda like the sw: jedi knight series.
-
yeah Axem...sucks to be you :)
-
I'm gonna try this in Battle of Beta Aquilea...each 20% of hull damage a wingman receives...it's AI skill will lower one level (simulating injures that would hinder his piloting skill)...when he reaches 10% hull integrity the pilot will fall unconscious and no longer be a threath (IE: i will put the protect flag and guardanize the ship, and make him play-dead)...
-
Of course the biggest problem with wingmen, they are all rubbish, can't match the might of the great and glorius Alpha 1. Idealy they should be able to match the piloting skills of Alpha 1, but that is more an A.I. concern.
Also, I always thought that Kappa Wing (just 3?) found the 2nd Konossos, went through, found another one, and found *something* (prob Sathanai)
