Title: Huh? What's going on at Volition?
Post by: Marauder on December 28, 2004, 12:31:14 pm
Hey guys,

I went to //www.volition-inc.com earlier today to be greeted by an advertisment of a new game: The Punisher.

Anyone know what's happened at Volition?  I mean, this is the first news broadcast in almost 4 years!

Huh, Volition? What's going on with that Volition?

:nervous: Don't expect anybody to get that...

I'm pretty sure most of the old team would have left. And they sort of... died... after Red Faction. All the games after that are pretty bad. It's all THQ's fault, their eyes should be burnt out with flaming breadsticks and glueguns.

THQ owned Volition quite literally. It owns em still....

i fear thq is far more tyranical than interplay was. the factof the mater is that all game publishers need to be set on fire.

yeah, they're making the punisher game. The good news is that the game is written by uhm, Warren Ellis I think (or was that Garth Ennis). The bad news is that judging by the reaction to the demo (yes, there is a demo) the game isn't very good.

Let's put it this way, their selected press quotes include;

"The Punisher is exceedingly violent, excessively profane, and highly disturbing."

"Filled with more horrific acts of violence than you can shake a severed, meaty limb at, the new Punisher game makes the Grand Theft Auto series look like Super Mario Kart."

For ****s sake, someone just throw them a space-sim shaped bone, eh?  It's doesn't have to be FS, anything rather than this tripe would do.

what pisses me off is that they are being forced to do console games first, then pc ports as a second thought. its been that way sence red faction. i personally think volition needs to try another space sim (this is truely their genra), if not fs3, then maybe some new universe. perhaps even make a sequal to freespace 2 and not calling it freespace at all. or pull what stargate did with atlantis (jump node to another galaxy, new enemies new governments new everything). being forced to make a game based on a movie which was based off a comicbook that noone ever read, is kinda crappy thing to do to a developer like v.

*edit* note to self, learn to type faster than aldo

Yep, I was mighty pissed off at them for Summoner 2.  It turned from a good point and click, with a story for PC & Mac, into a button-basher with stupid puzzle solving for the PS2...

Their justification is they are doing a Punisher game, a licence which happens to be uber-violent.

And the best quotes they can come up with is how violent it is - not how good it looks, not how much fun it is, but how much gore it has.  Smacks of Postal and Hooligans, to me.

Summoner 1, personally, was a lousy point and click with an excellent story. The only reason I kept playing the game was due to the story because the gameplay itself was pretty horrid for an RPG. Volition tried to make it the FS of RPGs. Pull together elements from major RPGs such as Final Fantasy, D&D, etc. and make a game. The problem is that this didn't work unlike when you pull together Wing Commander and X-Wing.

Summoner 2 from what I've heard sounds like a solid action-RPG with a decent plot. Too bad it was never ported.

Red Faction is a game that promised the moon, but was a mediocre FPS. (great ideas, but never implimented fully and a lackluster storyline) It is fun, and that is what's important. However, it's one of those that could have been so much more. Which is probably why the modding community didn't survive when UT2k3 came out. The engine was good but not good enough.

Pretty much Descent worked because it was so different, and FS worked because it was a fluke.

Red Faction II, yes. Red Faction I was ok. I liked it. Had good guns, a cool story, and great FX. But Red Faction II was a barf fest... I guess it all went downhill from there.
Whenever some game developer gets a good game out, they atract ****ty publishers like **** atracts flies. Wich doesn´t mean it´s always bad, but 90% of the times it spells disaster. Remember Ground Control II?

I am, however, amazed how some awesome games seem to pop up from the blue, with no warning, from obscure game developers. Like FarCry, wich kicked Half Life in the but big time. Or the latest i´ve played, The Chronicles of Riddick:Butcher Bay! Talk about a stunning game... How did they manage to make something so good, without as much as a whisper about it?
The voice acting is just too good to be true. And the graphics puts HL2 to shame...

I agree about Red Faction, that's why I said after. As far as the Riddick game, I'm disturbed they actually managed to make a decent game from a movie. Not just decent either, it's actually pretty good, and the graphics are very nearly identical to Doom 3. Usually movie/game conversions go very, very wrong. Although I have to disagree about Far Cry, as it has almost no story to speak of.

Yes, in the same way that GIF images have alpha transparency.

(Edit: Note, GIF images do not have alpha transparency.)

Why was Far Cry so good again? Aside from the pretty graphics if you have a lot of money?

Nothing is going on at Volition, because a commando team from here infilitrated the place and killed them all when they were bought by THQ.

It was better then the alternative of a THQ-controlled FS3.

No matter how bad it might be, it still owned HL2 and Doom3 together by a mile! And btw, i never said Farcry had a story. It doesn´t. But the gameplay and graphics made up for that loss.
Doom3 was just eye candy, and HL2 had one single thing going for it: the pretty rebel girl. I loved her!!! But the rest? Total deja-vu.

PS:Riddick is getting better by the minute. Now i get to ride on a Heavy Guard, totally bullit proof!! Those dickwad guards can´t hurt me now!! muaahaahaahaaa
:D :D

So the gameplay made it good? I played the demo and it seemed like the standard FPS sans story. I guess shooting baddies was fun, no more so than Halo or anything though.

Uh? You mean you are judging the merits or demerits of a game having played only the demo?? Shame on you, good sir...

well, that's what a demo is for.

I played the Far Cry demo and wasn't impressed. His arm holding the gun looks like a plastic prosthetic. I liked Doom 3, it was fun, had some nice blood splatter effects, and there is an expansion on the way-with the double-barrel shotgun!

There isn't much more to the game than the demo shows. In fact the demo was more fun, because the novelty of the good graphics hadn't worn off yet.

I have to admit, the P-90 was kind of cool... err... it was a P-90, right? Anyway, I thought it was neat. Not $40 neat, but free demo for twenty minutes neat.
