Hmm... I'll see if I can get something done  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

I need to be placed under 'casual', as I'm really just starting out. Plus my texturing skillz are not too good.

well, my shivan chimera will just fit well there I think  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) If I understand well, we don't need to make tbls or fsmm2 work, right?
What do you mean by "In addition, they do not need to be limited to what is convertable with the DM tools."? Can I put a 5000 polys model? ;b

You could have a 200,000 poly model if you wanted. (and I've seen them, check out the B5 Omega models)  Obviously, that would take a good lot of time to make, but then again, with an entry like that, you've got a good chance of blowing everyone else out of the water. If it's an original model.  So the SDF-1 or a zentreadi cruiser isn't allowable.

You can still post images from Geocities. Just exchange the "www" part of the url with "fp".

PS: The basic shape of my model is already complete. It's 2600 faces, including looots of turrets.

But it's not original, in the sense that a totally new ship is.  This is to get people to make new stuff, not model a pre-existing object.

I've seen this kind of thing before, it doesn't always go to plan due to the fact that every community has a few (dare I use the word) "Elite" modelmakers that win due to experience and excellent models.

If you want to have a more even contest you should have a category for artistic merit or most original concept or something along those lines, that way a newbie with a good design can have a chance of winning.

I didn't post the general guidelines that the staff voting is supposed to follow, but they include the terms 'originality' and 'sheer coolness.'

So get out there and make something that kicks *** !

Why should we care?  It's not going to be used in a game (or at least not intended for use in a game) so feel free, as limiting it to a single object is only a FS modelling constraint.  This contest is about creative and modelling talents.

Didn't you see my coment about 200,000 poly models being fine?   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Can I use texture/skins/maps (what ever they're called) extraxted from FreeSpace 2 and use it on my model? Which means the entire model is pretty much original except the whatever-its-called?

Yes, having to make new skins would fall under the term 'cruel and unusual.'  (I swear I said that already)

That being said, there's nothing stopping you using a photo-editing proggy (PSP, Photo-Paint, etc) to alter the skins, such as lightening/darkening, changing colors, etc.

I'm drawing most of the textures myself. But I also used some textures from X-Wing: Alliance.

We were expecting something like this  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) There'll be 'pros' and 'beginners' sections for the competition, or something to that effect  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

It's not finished - I'm a bit of a crap texturer so i'm building most of the details on as geometry.

I know its not all MY design, but then again with the origional art so hard to find i've had problems being able to get the finer details in.

If i can't enter it, just give me a shout and i can throw something else together (wont work in FS2, been bugging people on why my models always go..errm.."sticky" when i import them with segeltuch!)

No, they don't need to be ported into FS2. That bars a lot of modellers.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Ello!  It's-a me, Morat.  I came from the IWAR board, where Shrike advertised this competition.  I'm a dedicated casual modeler (dedicated, but I started a few months back, and haven't got the time) and I use geocities, which seems to be blocking my use of http://fp ("http://fp")  as well as www (or perhaps my site's gone...) so where do I EMail what I spent my Sunday doing?

Mail the images to Shrike, he will upload them. And yes, Geocities IS evil.

wait a mo...   (//fp://www.geocities.com/beparry666/art/dv3fthumb.jpg)

EDIT: That didn't even give me a broken image...now I'm confused.    (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/frown.gif)
EDIT: Well, it seems the address was right with http://fp. ("http://fp.")  not fp://www.  It seems geocities really has blocked it, and I'm not just very stupid.  Though I am.

"they should be in the 3dap.com/hlp/pics/ directory. I'll doublecheck when I get home." (someone should explain me how to make quotes hehe)

Ok, how can I go there? typing the adress doesn't work of course, and I can't find a link (I'm the winner of the Most-newbylike-question  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif))

Type www.3dap.con/hlp/pics/filename.jpg ("http://www.3dap.con/hlp/pics/filename.jpg")  in your address window.  You remember your filenames, right?
