Okay, how to put this briefly? I've been hearing all the raving about Freespace 2, and how Freelancer is nothing compared to it, so I finally decided to download it from The Underdogs. Now, I really can't make much sense of the game, as everywhere I go, the text just scrolls by too quickly. In my mission debriefings, each part of the text only displays for roughly 2 seconds, or possibly even less. No biggie, since it's not all that important and there's a pause button, right? Well, the problem is also evident in training, and the missions too. Any text that pops up is only displayed for between 1 and 2 seconds before disappearing, and I simply CANNOT absorb the basics of the game like this.
So I figure probably the easiest way to get around this is to download the speech files. Well, the FTP just takes too damn long for me, and the eDonkey links seem to be dead altogether (not to mention that if they ever started working, they'd probably transfer even slower than on the FTP). Anyway, I can't be bothered. So that's that solution out the window.
Basically, is there anything I can do to slow down the text, or at least use some kind of hotkey to freeze the screen at will so I can read over what's being said?
Secondly, I notice that while in-game, my mouse doesn't seem to be recognized. I can navigate the menus just fine with it, but I can't steer my ship with it. Shouldn't I be able to do this?
Third, and last of all, I haven't tried internet play yet, but I'd like to try it out with a friend via an IP connection -- if we've both downloaded the HotU version and not fiddled with any updates or fixes or patches, should we be able to do this?
-
You might be able to nind the mouse but freespace is designed to be played by joysytick, actualy i'm preety sure mouse is bindable, go into settings controls and bind the yaw and pitch axes.

Are you using retail or the Source Code Project version?
Oh, and
:welcome:
Oh, and you don't really have a monkey for a head, do you?

I've never seen the text speed problem you're describing... For the briefings, the pause button would help. That may be because it generally waits for the avi to finish before it goes to the next stage, and with the dummy ani's HOTU gave, they last for no time at all. But in game, I don't understand it.
-
Probably becasue it waits for the speech file to finish.
-
For the messages thing - if you're not going to get the voice files, then you need to make use of the pause button in the command and mission briefings and the F4 key (for objectives and events as well as messages) in normal play.

Well, I don't own the game legally, if that's what you mean. I just downloaded the version that HotU has up. The zip is about 214 MB.

1st. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/karajorma/freespace/hotu.html - Lots of answers to your questions there. Some of the info is a little out of data now that we have the SCP but most of it will still prove useful to you. :)
Secondly the best thing you can do (apart from use F4 for now) is to go to MatthewPapa's Game Warden site and request a download slot. GW is kind of busy since it's christmas and we have lots of new people joining the community at the moment but once you get a slot you can either download the VP files needed to make HotU into a full version or get all three FS2 ISO file and burn yourself a copy of the retail CDs.

As blaise said, if you want to read messages in-mission, you can press F4 and it'll take you to a screen from which you can read all transmissions, view objectives, and see events (ships/subsystems destroyed, arrivals/departures, etc). Very useful if you haven't got the voice files to listen to.
You could try contacting MatthewPapa, one of the members here. He has the FS2 ISO files up for download. You'll have to wait a little while for them, though, as he has limited bandwidth so he can only upload it every so often. :)

EDIT: dammit, kara - you beat me to it! :p

Okay, the F4 screen works just fine for now. Thanks. :)
And I must say, for a community based around a game that's no longer being sold, this is one of the most active boards I've ever seen.

Heheh. Well, what can I say? It's a bloody good game. :D And the Source Code Project (check the forum out, btw - it's very impressive) has given the whole thing a big lease of life, and has revitalised us no end. Without it, we probably would have died out by now.
A good thing about this place is it's size. Yeah, it's small, but that means that most people here actually know each other better than members of bigger communities. That's kind of cool, and it keeps things running along nicely, because there's always something good going on. :)

Tend to get into bloody massive shouty matches, though

SHUT UP!!

You could try using the speech function of fs2_open in 3.6.5, you might be able to have the briefings and ingame messages read to you. (Dunno if it'll work on your system or with the HOTU VPs though.)

NO, YOU SHUT UP!!111
