Delete icons on my desktop that won't be deleted(but pressing delete while selecting them), or dragged into the Recycle Bin?
-
huh?
so you have icons you want to delete, but when you try, what happens? does it say it deleted it, but it's still there? does it say "this file is in use and cannot be deleted" or what?
-
did you try in a dos prompt?
that can usually do it...
-
yeah try rebooting, or you could try dos, as was mentioned.
-
*snicker* that happens to me sometimes. especially with font files after i try to install them (and they already are installed)
just wait a few days... eventually itll delete normally.
-
Is it an AOL icon? I had trouble with one a few years ago on and older machine...it appears that it actually installed itself on the desktop instead of using a shortcut.
-
I can delete my AOL icons... :nervous:
[moronic]Its fun deleting them![/moronic]
:p
-
They're icons that say like Poker, Internet, stuff like that, which I don't want on there, and when I select them and press delete or try and drag them over, nothing happens and they don't move.
I don't know how to use DOS, so could you give me the commands and whatnot.(I'm sounding so noob right now:nervous: .)
-
Oh, so you've been installing porn software and you don't want you're parents to know...
-
How helpful.
Anyway, try deleting them from safe mode?

Ah this happened to me just this morning, the icons arent realy there, right click and hit refresh.
-
What vyper said, works for me when I can't delete stuff for now apparent reason.
-
Run Adaware ("www.lavasoft.com")? Might be some adware that puts the icons on your desktop after you delete 'em, but I dunno.

I don't find Poker/Card Game/Bingo/Internet to be porno... But anyways, Ad-Aware did the trick. Thanks guys.
-
if it comes back after you re-start, it means they have a backup installed somewhere, so you need to find that too.
-
this thing will never go away without a clean format, i know.
-
I've gotten rid of plenty of these without formatting my computer.
Of course, one time I just cut off the internet, and ran so many virus and adware/spyware scans it's not funny...
EDIT: I think it sometimes depends on the individual machine though.
EDIT2: Crappy firewalls don't help, hispeed internet is more prone than 56k from what I hear, etc.
-
This exact one? then enlighten me
The icons are pastely colored right?
-
turn off active desktop for one...if they're "ghost" icons, that should be how they're getting in, and should be how to kill them.
-
aHA!!! i was waiting to see how long it would be before someone said "format"...
...format, to erase an icon, ... a little over-kill don't you think? ;)

Oh, not the exact same kind. I've just had icons before, but adwight said Adaware cleared his up, so I assumed it was like mine were.
You might have picked up some really nasty ones however...:p

I've had these for like ever, every time they popped up i was able to remove them but they came back again, this time they're undeleteable.
Seems to be linked to a program called "PureFrag.exe"
-
PureFrag.exe eh? hehehehehe
hahahahaha
based on your knowledge of the Descent series, what do you think PUREFRAG.exe will do to your compuer once executed? :D :D j/k
-
hmm.. i asume turn my computer in to a mindles killing robot?
-
I'm with Crack. I say a format is in order! Burn the mother down!

It's those exact same ones, but they haven't come back yet...
-
They will, i assure you.
-
I need to get rid of these things asap, because my dad is getting pissed off and is starting to think I've been doing stuff I shouldn't, so could someone help me step by step to get rid of this problem?
-
First, run spyware and adware checks... And then you should go to the installed programs section in the control panel, and look for something that's out of place...
-
i have this damn two IEXPLORE.exe's virus, i have no idea how i'm gonna get rid of it.
yay! fixxed by searhing registry and deleting all instances of funklicensesize.exe as well as iexplore.exe whenever the two are together!
And then ctrl+alt+dl end task the iexplores (took a few tries before they stopped coming back)
the undeleteable icons disapeared now i'm clean (i hope)

My Computer > (C: ) > Right-click > Format
-
(C:)
-
*was to lazy to put in the necesary characters to avoid a smilie face*
-
And for Pete's sake quit using Internet Exploder!
<-------
-
I'm not, it's a virus.
I actualy just deleted internet explorer from my machine becasue it was what was making the icons come. Now the icons come and theres nothing i can "end task" to make them go away for a little while :(
hmm... found
axis mapi.exe
-
Great, jsut great. I got totaly rid of the icons, but now thertes a process called "system" that takes up innane amounts of cpu nad memory, the swap space has eaten up alll the free space on drive C.
Anyways, unless somone can come up with a bright idea to get me out of this mess i'm gonna have to format.
-
:D:D:D
-
FireCrack, thank you for helping me get rid of them. They did come back after AdAware, but getting rid of the IExplore.exe in CTR+ALT+DEL got rid of them. Thanks.
Oh ya and sandwich, I do use Firefox, its just for a while my parents wouldn't use it, so instead they used IE. :D
Firecrack, I also have the same process, but it dosn't take up any system resources...
-
Have you run Spybot and Adaware(both)?
Download AVG and run a detailed virus check. It may take several hours.
-
Well, i did reformat. unfortunately my windows CD was "damaged beyond repair" so now i'm re-obtaining windows.
-
Is that "obtaining" or going to the store to buy a new copy?:D
I don't see a problem if you already own what you're downloading and you're DLing because of technical issue related to the piss poor media the companies expect to last forever.
-
Seems to me he made it pretty clear.
-
I was being...sarcastic.

M$ problably has a thing where you can orgder a replacement CD, posibly with no proof of purchase whatsoever but that probably takes 6-8 weeks*
