I think that's what he said furher down in the article....

Everything is US fault anyway. Even my friends being drunk this night, I'm sure they have a part in it.
More seriously:
Yet the truth is not so grim. For centuries, steady progress has been made in the struggle to limit the effects of natural disasters. Last year, an earthquake that measured 6.6 on the Richter scale killed more than 40,000 people in the Iranian city of Bam. In 1989, a more powerful earthquake struck outside San Francisco. The death toll was fewer than 100. Of course there were demographic and geologic differences that contributed to the disparity. Of course there will never be a fail-safe protection against the most destructive efforts of nature. But it is within our reach to build systems that can mitigate their effects.
Yeah, ok, but good luck creating a systeml that'll protect against tidal waves.

All you do is raise the alarm & evacuate. They have it in the Pacific to protect Japan & the West Coast of the US.
Scientists knew a tsunami was going to hit several hours prior, but they couldn't do anything as there was no person, agency or structure who they could contact and raise the alarm to.
-
And how do you cover the thousands of miles of coasts, the thousands of small fisher towns, how do you protect the propertises, etc?
And image, for us big cities people, that they find out, let's say four hours earlier ( being very optimistic ), than a major earthquake is gonna happen near, say, afar from New York, resulting in a tsunami that'll hit one hour later. Let's assume they decide right away the decision is accurate, that the info can be prepared and broadcasted in a flash, etc. ko, now, imagine, live broadcast in New York: " People, in 5 hours, a tidal wave 10 to 20 meters high will hit the city". No matter how diplomatic will be the tone used, it will result in only one thing: chaos. Everybody will try to run for their lives, but nobody will get out.
So the US west coast has an advanced warning system? I suppose it has yet to show it's usefulness. As for japanese, they're used to that, I suppose they would react right away, w/o any need for special warning or anything anyway.

Did that article actually have a point? I can't work out what, if anything, the author was trying to prove...

The US is responsible for everything bad in the world. It's so true. ;)
-
This would have been bad no matter what warnings were in place, but an alert system would certainly have saved some lives.
Scotland registered the quake at our Unis before India even reacted to it.
-
You know it just occured to me that Georgey hasn't tried to blame the disaster on gays or "turrists" yet. I wonder if he's feling ill...

That because FOX NEWS has assured us that the Department of Homeland Security does not believe that there are turrist ties to the origin of the earthquake. :p
-
Oh, of COURSE it's the US's fault! It's just a big conspiracy! The US planted a nuke in an undersea tectonic plate, causing a large portion of it to explode and shift direction, causing the tidaly wave! Why? Why to draw attention away from Iraq, and destroy the Southern Asian oil reserves so that Haliburton can once more move in on a shattered economy!
Please people, this si the dumbest **** I've heard in a long time.

You didn't read it, right? The guy's denouncing that.
-
yeah what you read was the inital sarcasm. now who looks like an idiot?:)
as for what you could do, well you could have a bunch of air raid sirens type things half the US is covered in these things to act as tornado warnings
-
"Civil defense sirens". Geez, Bob. :doubt:
Just kiddin'. :D

Headlines like that are what people read, not the entire article. He could have said:
"(INSERT NAME) or (INSERT SOCIAL GROUP) believes that the tsunami was the US's fault" because guess what the title sends across to the readers?
"This is obvious bull**** and I'm not going to read it" and so I didn't.

Your mom.

Actually, you just look lazy and dim-witted.
-
The part about stingy contributions is true. Several European nations have contributed over $1.00 per capita in relief; the US has contributed 12 cents per capita.
-
yet it's still more total money.

So you're lazy, couldn't be bothered to check your prejudices were correct and then spouted off about how crazy the author was and that's somehow his fault?
Newspapers (with the exception of certain tabloids) are written with the expectation that the story will be read rather than commented on by simpletons. Simply admit you made a mistake rather than making yourself look even more foolish by attempting to blame someone else for your lack of foresight.

Another political thread bites the dust.
