At any rate - the fact that it's happening out there is sickening. However it's happening everywhere really. It's only made more tragic because it's happening to people in already unpleasent circumstances.

I take a minute to refer you all to my prediction that humanity has approximately 9 years of life left in it. If we do live out the next decade - things will probably be very different.

For us it isn't the end of the world. But for alot of victims it is. All that's left is a shell, or worse, a suicide attempt succeeds. Luckily I haven't had to deal with that part. Only attempts. Serious attempts, not the crap where they call someone to talk them out of it. The psyche is a fragile thing, rape destroys it. I don't know if i agree that rape is worse than murder, because unlike with murder, one can heal from rape. On the other hand...i rank it right up in the top three crimes. Along with murder...and kids.

now the part about how often it happens...i agree 100%, it happens far too often. then again as far as i am concerned, once is too often.

And well, rape is always there, like the little cow in Arla's commercials. It has always happened and will happen into foreseeable future, which doesn't make it ok. War or catastrophes are followed by four things: rape, pillage, famine and plague. I think we're already seeing 1,2 and 4, with number 3 coming up.

Wolf: I think rape is worse than murder because murder is final - the victim is dead, and cannot suffer any more. Rape leaves them alive, but a shadow of their former self. They have been violated in the worst possible way - psychologically as well as physically. It alters someone's mind forever - they will have to deal with the event for the rest of their life, and that is something that they might not be able to do. As you said, the victim may never be able to trust a man again, let alone form a close bond with one. It wrecks a life, for no good reason other than the perpetrator's base desire for power. and pyro i apreciate what you are saying. It's not about sex. It's about violence. I do however rank it and murder equally. Along with the crimes against kids. The reason i say that, is that there is a chance for a rape victim to become a rape survivor. That is a powerful thing to see. More so when you are the first person that they allow to touch them after a few years without being touched anyone. A murder victim doesn't have the chance to heal, obviously. Although i will go so far as to say that the act itself, does end life as she knows it, and is every bit as horrific. Have we reached an accord?

(I was comparing the levels of suffering involved. Murder, yes, you're dead, but then again you're dead. No more problems. Rape you survive, so the suffering goes on for months and years. Then again, I have no personal experience of either, so I'm not in a position to make a definitive statement...)

How many times have you laughed at a joke that involved someone being killed? Humor is offensive. It's offensive because it's the alternative to being consumed by depression when you look at the nature of the human condition. Just because someone makes jokes about severe topics does not mean they're sadistic or ignorant.

That's because until recently i've kept him on ignore. However I find that there are occassions when his insight is uncanny. most of what i see from anon is government/religeon bashing or flaming people. but in this thread, he's shown class. so to be honest, anon saying things to bait people is one thing, anyone purposely baiting is one thing, i just don't think Janos was baiting anyone, i think he made a joke that he thought was funny. There's the difference, that's why most of the time i ignore anon's statements, they are just bait, and why i didn't ignore Janos comment.

other than that, the rest was simply having a debate with pyro about how severe we view certain crimes to be.
