Title: Viper MKIV
Post by: DamoclesX on January 04, 2005, 01:02:58 am
Well I finally got it done, now all I have left to do is rig it to work in the engine and fix up a few minor things.

Any tips you might want to share? I've always loved your texture work

That's a really, really ugly fighter, but the model is excellent, as is the texturing.

That's awesome, but a little fat, make it skinnier where the wings start to flare out, imho :)

ug I had a big reply but the forum ate it.

For the textures, I really cant "explain" how to do them in a few paragraphs.. a lot of it is just looking at it and working from there. One thing you could do is learn how to weather buildings, grab as many photoshop vids and ebooks as you can, and just go throught hem.

You wont find any on "how to make a cool fighter" but you will learn other things, lots on buildings and such, that will be very important since they use the same process.

The ship´s body looks good, but the cockpit needs to be stretched forward. It´s too small.

Not really, you just got the scale of man wrong :p

There is no man yet:)

And its a huge fighter, think mk1, the man was tiny ass compared to the fighter not like in the new mk2's and mk7's

It's like a Jedi Starfighter except cool.

I don´t mean to say that the cockpit is small in scale, i mean the structure is too far back, needs to be taken forward. As it is, the pilot would feel like looking down a barrel.  Keep the cockpit on the same size, but bring the structure forward.
If you look at it from a side view, you´ll see what i mean.

You're a great texture artist. Please do some original series models :)

All the Battlestar Galactica Vipers were like this... Putting the cockpit forward would... how can I say that... :blah: make the ship less similar with the other Vipers?

Edit: Saw the response... Hmm... Still, dunno how that'll help me. :(

Hey guys,

I got good news and bad news.

The bad news is I cant finish my galactica mod or port it to freespace with some help from the community:(

The good news is

I got hired to lead the art team for a new space sim, its a full out project that will be out in stores, I cant say more the that, and wont, but, if you like freespace 2, freelancer, starshatter, starlancer, or those kinds of games you will love it.

Thanks to those of you who checked out my work and posted, even if I didnt respond I took every post under advisment.

If i manage to find the time I will fire the models off to some people to convert, they are kind of stil messy tho, 2048 textures and slightly unfinished meshes.

hey, how do you go about getting one of those nice jobs? I don't see too many "game modeler/texture artist/programmer wanted, no experience requiered" help wanted adds.

Actually, I think he has experience working freelance.

I've seen a few.... I'm not good enough to apply, natch; plus I don't have the diversity of work anyways.  I know of one website that does only list games-related works - including artwork - although it's uk only.

Ya

actually, the best think you can do is pick a game and mod it the best you can really.

Anybody can goto school, or put all this impressive stuff on their resume, or render cool high poly sceans or abstract "art"

none of that is impressive at all.

Do a model that can work in a game, put it in the game, and hand it out, then do more, and make sure they are the best out there, they have to beat the stock models, and they have to stand out in the community.

That proves you have the ability, will, and devotion to stick it out.

THAT gets you the job.

Every offer/job I have had came from that.

Isn't that abit like saying anyone can whip a few polys together, or paint a few pixiles on the side of a ship ? Or whip a few events together and make a FS mission ?:doubt:

Congrats to Damo... Guess he'll be too busy to stop by much anymore :(   Least you guys can do is pick up what he leaves behind. Like the Muppet says, "The only models in the cave are what you bring with you" ;) or something like that.

Now, would this new venture have something to do with PROJECT 7 ?

He's talking about demonstrating what you can do, and that you can do that to a plan, rather than taking a few bog-standard courses or maybe accidentally cranking out some super-greebled box that looks good rendered but doesn't work in a game.
