Title: Beginner and Expert is a go
Post by: Shrike on March 28, 2001, 07:53:00 pm
Well, judging from some of the entries (very impressive) we've just gotten, we're going forward with a seperation of the expert and beginners.  So for all those with TS, don't despair.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

do you think you could seperate between rendering models and models that have a snowball's chance in a nova of making it into a game. becase game models wont hold up aganced a rendered model.
ya, it's not that I just don't want to loose but realy (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Yeah. My model was designed for the game, and I had to be careful with the poly count  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

So it doesn't look as good as it could have. Also, I use Blender (not quite as good as 3DS Max  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif))

So.....make one not designed for a game.   (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

You have several weeks at the minimum, so get cracking.

I used Flight Sim Toolkit Shape Editor for mine. Does that mean I get the prize for the most couragous modeller, or the one for the most stupid?

When you can "render" a photorealistic ship from any angle in Paint, THEN you get that award.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Mine're for a game.  It just happens to be SE4, which uses pre-rendered bitmaps and nothing else  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

You could always 'draw inspiration' from some good sci-fi shows or renders...  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

It worked for Star Wars.

Seriously, they just took inspiration from random things they saw.

It's the same for Star Trek. There are people there that go into a shop and all they see is starship parts. And there is a German sci-fi show from the sixties called Space Patrol Orion, that really had a flat-iron on the ships main control panel.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

lol, for me it works the other way, when I look at the enterprise, I see a frying-pan  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

Hahaha......I thought they took the idea from UFOs. You know, the saucer thingy?  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/biggrin.gif)

I think when George Lucas wanted to design starfighters for the Rebel Alliance, he referred to the alphabets for the designs.

Ties (the cockpit) is remeniscent of the B-52 flying fortress.

Vader's helm very like samurai helmets in days long gone by.

The idea for the Enterprise design (originally called "Rocket Ship X-9"  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) ) cam mostly from working through covers of various sci-fi magazines, and the idea that "We don't know how these drives work, but they surely are dangerous, so let's put them far away from the ships crew."

B52? I think it looks much more like a b29 Stratofortress. Anyway...
