Title: Need Software for Trailer
Post by: Grey Wolf on April 13, 2001, 08:59:00 pm
I was just thinking. Most good campaigns have a trailer. When SHaS(nice acronym, huh?) is nearing completion, I'm going to have to make one. And not being a complete idiot, I want to know how to use the software before my attempt at making one. So does anyone know where there's good free software for this?

Do you mean no as in it's a bad acronym or no as in I don't have to make a trailer?

Bingo  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) Just because everyone else is doing it, that doesn't mean you have to. And, if the trailer doesn't turn out spectacularly well, it will take up your time and may create a worser campaign. Will the trailer add to the campaign a great deal? If not, it's really not necessary.

Oh yeah, I got the ad banner and the hosted by GIF on the page. It's ready to upload. I didn't put it up on the Geocities page because there's no point. It's ready when you are.

Although I do suggest you make one or a few cool 'posters.'  That's much easier to do, and will serve almost as well as a much harder to do trailer.  As well, trailers are hard to get right....look at the BWO trailer.  It was nifty, but it didn't really show all that much.

"Worser"?

Trailers are one of those things, if you're talking video, that requires a whole new skill set.

Find someone who has done good ones, and ask them, otherwise can it  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

But, I just post here because I am homesick for Thunder and Fantomeye  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif) So, pay no attention to the man behind the curtain...

I wouldn't suggest doing a trailer, even the brief 25 second one for Twilight was a pain.

My main issues were with compressing the original file done within Shockwave flash. (an 800x600 file which in total was 80megabytes)

The .avi version on the site, 15 megabytes is only 320x240 resolution.

The .wma, and .smk versions are much smaller (500k, and 3.58 megs respectively) but at the cost of a much lessened visual and audio quality.

Black Water Op's trailer has better luck with it's compression, but in my opinion the amount of true content within it was not worth the effort of making it.

This opinion also holds true to the Twilight trailer, which for me was simply a test to see if I could do a movie in flash, it worked out well so I released it, albiet with problems at first when the original file was a 60meg download.  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif)

Unless you are going to do a charcoal-style animation with renders, ship interiors, and characters to tell a story and to be a "cutscene" of quality, don't bother with a trailer... (oops I've revealed too much of future plans... doh!  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/wink.gif) )

Yes, but, you're only now officially on the staff, sparky  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Anyway, Ace's thoughts (Adam, not BLACK ACE) are as usual on target.

Now, if you insist on a trailer, and need help, I might be able to spare some video editing time for you chief  (http://dynamic.gamespy.com/~freespace/ubb/noncgi/smile.gif)

Did you miss my post when I agreed with Setekh and Shrike about not making a trailer after all? And Shrike, thanks for the idea about the "posters". That reminds me, when Maeglamor finishes the ships anyone want to do some rendering?

Don't worry man, I haven't forgotten you. I've had a lot of real life crap to deal with so I'm a bit slow right now but you'll get the stuff soon.
