The FORUM IS GOING TO CRASH!!!
Some people are experiencing problems being able to post due to the spam filter! This is because the GMT control module is not correctly stamping the time on each post made by users! When a user posts a message, the time may post several minutes AFTER the correct time. When they make a second post, a spam filter verifies the user has post <= 30 seconds. The user must wait until the the time of his last post on the specific subject in order to post again!
If this is not resolved right away, the amount of errors will increase, causing the spam filter module to require more memory. Other failsafe processes will begin to compansate, requiring more memory. The over abundent of processes will consume more memory and processing power, which will begin to reach a cap. Processes will then begin to fail, and memory crashes will begin, following a total fatal error, resulting in the FORUM to go down. Someone contact an admin!
NOTE: If you can not post a message, you may still be able to get messages out by editing previously made messages.

How do you know this sir?

I also host a server, and know Linux blows away Windows when running one. I also know when a server can go down, and how it can go down, and how hackers try to break into a server. :)

*looks at cje's post count*
...and...why do think this is going to happen?
and don't you think the admins would know of this problem?
*edit*
...Linux...:doubt:...uh huh...so servers gonna crash...rrrrright....

The question is whether GS would tell them Cor.

true...

Have fun with this URL.

Sounds pretty iffy to me.

What about it?
Hey, jepson...if you're so worried, why don't you just PM or email the admins?

Admins know when something is wrong only when something is wrong.
Not all admins sit on a chair and watch a bandwidth meater for hours and hours. Same goes with memory usage. Most admins use programs to alart them of possible problems, then they research the problem to find the cause of it. Submitting information to the admin, saves him work and headache. Maybe they do know, maybe they don't. Either way, you enjoy being forumless if they don't know?

Iffy is correct. I don't feel like seeing the forum be down for a few days. As the subject title goes, Server Crash Possible!!!. Isn't that an iffy subject?

What I mean is that you sound like a troll.

This is the first time I'm hearing this be used like this, and I play a great deal of MMORPGs. =)

HLP going down, surely you jest :)

clicked the link...there's only one reason why the time would be messed up...it's setup in in europe or some other country who is ahead of you...
...it is a bit...odd though...

BTW, I know that my profile doens't show me as a very reliable user, but that is because I use this user name, when I can't use mine (like I can't now because of the spam filter). =)

it's you're friend, mister doomsayer.
also,

I restart my server (game warden) every 24 hours to prevent something like this from happening. They are bound to do the same. Even if it did crash wouldnt the worst thing that could happen is a reboot?!!!?
-
You realize that using alt-nicks is either banned or severely frowned upon, right?
-
Ugh... finally I can post again...
He's xenthorious...
A-yep... MS told me that you WCS guys were paranoid about a server crash... You're only proving it...
The way I see it, the server was finally fixed, and because of that, the time was wrong. Now I had to wait ~30 minutes for the time to elapse so I could post again, but now that that's over, everything should work fine again. Since it seems the forum clocks are correct now.

Uhh? Since when does the location have any effect on how a forum should operate? If I post a message five minutes before you submit a reply, regardless of your time, my message should be before to yours.

they are?

Glad someone agrees. Problem is, there are other posts that experienced this problem as well. Our little discussion was not the first. Two days ago, I ran into the same thing. Did they fix it all to gether, or just the isolated insident?

OMG, do you hear yourself??? "I WAS UNABLE TO POST WITH MY DEDICATED USER ID". I am also trying to be helpful! Please bring your flaming actions to a stop, Grey Wolf 2009.

He is Xenthorious! From the WC Saga![/color]
Come on guys, put one and one together...
The server isn't going to crash. It just corrected itself. Since the time was 40 minutes ahead when the server clock was reset, we had to wait 40 minutes for the times to catch up. Now that it has, everything will be fine again. Calm down and LOCK THIS THREAD!

No mature adult boasts like this. He's just showing off his knowledge (since when are all those languages and graphics design germane to this discussion?). Don't take him seriously - he's probably just a kid. :D
Also he's probably a n00b. No professional lists HTML as a skill anymore...

Can someone explain to me what a "TROLL" is??? Can't tell if weather or not troll is a compliment or a critizism, but the method of how it is used (if it is critizism) is flaming, which is a violation of forum rules.
-
troll n. - someone who posts inflamatory posts in order to provoke a confrontation, or to anger other forumites.
-
Not recently...

generally

Flaming...
Also, a mature adult would not try to act like an adult by promoting critism...
I was asked how I came up with a theory, and I answered. The question (if not intended as a flame) was desiring information regarding facts and experience empowering my theory. I answered this the best way I could. I was also trying to be helpful. I do not know why the flaming is so out of control, but if I knew so many people would get a thrill out of doing it from (someone trying to be helpful), I would have never bothered to help.
-
Please note that I'm not the only one promoting criticism. And who's to say this this criticism isn't helpful to the community?
We've had troublemakers here before. Do you guys NOT remember when a female p0rn star posted here not too long ago? Do a search, my friends...
-
you know 'blah'de blah'de blah...' but you don't know what a Troll is!?! :wtf:

Thank you very much Raa. I had no idea I seemed this way, and if I came across like this, I am sorry. My reply was not dedicated to put anyone down.

Edit: Looks like Rampage is referring to this (http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,25460.0.html) thread.

If it was Aunt Thrax, you all have been utterly fooled.

I would if I got frequently involved in posts that had troll'ish or flaming activity in it. Obviously, I don't, and as I stated before, if I knew this post would have provoked so many people to get a thrill out of this, I would have not helped at all.

Like I said, I know you're xenthorious... the others are ignoring that.
Either way, the server is fine. This thread is not helpful.
BTW; You can use your original login again... it'll work now.

U see this post? it's 20 minutes off. It is also quoting the wrong person. I did not quote myself. The problem is not fixed. This only proves my claims more. Heck, I wonder if this post will be accurate when I hit "Submit Reply".

Thanks a bunch Raa. Got so busy answering everyone's flames, I forgot you said this on your previous message.
-
Awesome. Once again Raa, thanks you very much...
-
So like you were saying Raa... 1 + 1 = 1?
-
Jesus, what a mess about something, that even if it was just for conflagatory purposes, could have been simply ignored.
I cant be bothered naming names and I certainly dont refer to everyone who replied to this but if you think the purpose of this thread was to start an argument then some of you were stupid enough to go along with it.
Hmmm, I'm sure the people who'll want to have a go at me will take a quick look at my low post count and base their arguments around that.
[EDIT] Bah, Im just a bit grumpy.
-
Look at it this way everyone, at least if it does go down, we might actually get some stuff done ;)
-
I know I did. :D

Guys, is having the HLP server crash really a foreign idea to you? I wouldn't be surprised if it happened, in all honesty.
He didn't flame, and I'm pretty sure he wasn't trolling, so I don't see why some of you are being so critical *looks at Rampage*.
OTOH, yes, if this was a major worry for you, it probably would have been better to PM or e-mail one of the admins.
And I find it hard to take people who use postcounts to gauge credibility seriously. :p

The server probably has at least a 1 GB of memory. I hate to break it to you, but your everyday IP address - when stored efficiently, which it WILL be on a server - takes up around 4 bytes. Along with other information, you're talking at most a kilobyte in this 'spam filter' - which would almost certainly be a PHP script, probably using a MySQL table, and would only need to take up memory when someone posts.
I'm not too worried.
