Title: no servers: i'm at a loss
Post by: Daryna on January 05, 2005, 09:58:55 pm
hey there,

I was so happy to see that there's still a way to play multiplayer after i found out pxo is down .. but i just can't get it to work :(

i've been browsing this forum and the faqs for hours, but just can't find a solution for my problem.

my file is fs2_open_T-20041230.exe, launcher version 5.2.

i followed this guide:

http://scp.indiegames.us/e107_plugins/custompages/fs2netdguide.php

at first, everything seemed to work fine. the game started up, i entered my fs2netd login, created a pilot and clicked the multiplayer door. it logged me in with no problems, and - no servers. i know for sure that there were games running, from this (http://www.burbworld.com/fs2netd/games.php) page. i double checked this by asking a friend to host a game. it showed up in the fs2netd weblist, but not in my game.

when i log in, my username doesn't show up on the active users (http://www.burbworld.com/fs2netd/users.php) page, either.

i am not behind a router, deactivating my firewall doesn't help either.

i'm at a loss .. any help? :doubt:

:)

Have you tried connecting directly to your friends game?  You can add their IP to the list in the muti options screen in the game and see if the one server shows up.  If it doesn't then there is likely some firewall issue going on.  Make absolutely sure that the Windows firewall is off (in XP SP2, or a firewalled DSL connection in XP) and that you don't have any other firewall software installed/running (like Norton, McAfee, ZoneAlarm, etc.).

You can try testing youself.  Run the FS2_Open in a window (Launcher, under Dev Tool), create a network game and then try and scan it via a UDP port scanner.  I've been looking for a web based UDP port scanner for you to test with but I can't find one. http://www.dslreports.com/scan may do it but it wasn't working (offline) when I tried.  You will be looking for UDP port 7808 and if you shows up as something other than closed or stealthed then the firewall is truely off.

that's strange ..  I portscanned myself, and the fs2-port is not open when hosting a game. the windows firewall is disabled, zonealarm is off and i don't have a hardware router. yet there is "no service" running at port 7808.

//edit: my games (both dedicated and serve&play) do show up on the fs2net games weblist, but not ingame. it is impossible to connect to them. //

i can run all kinds of servers with no problems, like webserver, ftp server, mysql server, half life 2 server, tachyon server, etc. the respective ports open, and clients can connect.

no such luck for fs2o so far .. :(

might this be a problem related to the changes in XP sp2 socket api?

sounds like the SP2 firewall isn't really as disabled as you'd like it to be...

i'm not a newbie with computers/internet .. it is as disabled as it gets ;)

even IF it was still running because of a bug or whatever, it wouldn't just block fs2 while allowing all other servers.
