Hello,
just a thought, but would it be possible to change the asteroid-field (in Fred and ingame) to a sphere-one instead the current cube-one ?
With a sphere you can still edit x,y and z axis, but the hard corner wouldn't be visible when you create missions on the side of an asteroid-field, or in our course when you closing in on one (using autopilot and travel from one waypoint to another, where a asteroid-field is set).
-
Seconded. Good idea.
-
Me likes.........
-
Agreed, that sounds like a great idea.. plus you'd just need to know the centerpoint and the max distance from that point an asteroid can spawn/despawn :)
-
And the ellipsoid/sphere code could be extended to localized nebulae when they're implemented.
-
That would be the cream on the cake :D (I wonder how localized nebulae would look from outside in the freespace-engine) Their border should be somewhat half-transparent, so that they didn't make a hard-break in the visual when flying into them.
-
Yeah, i guess poofs get more transperant between the inner and outer radius.

I would go for a system like Freelancer.

bah, me still think one should be able to create a pof that would be used as a dummy to set the astroid field area. That way you can make it how you want.
-
I agree with Nico here, I was thinking that if you designed a simple pof, and used the points where the polys meet to denote the position of an 'Asteroid' you could design very complex set-ups for asteroid fields, and all you what have to do is designate the 'Skeleton Pof' for that mission in Fred :)

What'd be nice is if some nebula poofs/particles could be drawn on the ship's trails locations when it exits the nebula, quickly yet gradually decreasing as it flies out of the main nebula area....
*drools*

Well, I suppose logically, if a nebula has a 'bounding wall' (there are 2 types of nebula, the 'on/off' type such as 'X2' or 'ST Armada etc' and the gradual, such as Freelancer.) It wouldn't be hard to detect a ship leaving the area of nebula and adding a bunch of correctly coloured particles to the engine emitters?
That said, I don't have to code it, so it's easy for me to say ;)

SEconded!
Spherical aszteroid fields are much better!
-
Why stop at spheres. We could have Fred use a asteroid/nebula editer that edits the shape and limites of the asteroides and nebula. Just use a check box to say you want asterod and/or nebula. We could have the effect (gradual or all at once) either way as well, just have a ratio button.
We could also expand what effects nebula has on ships(ST Armada type nebula); such as em interference, Radar interferince, radio interference, system interference (engine performance reduced, weapons less effective, shields less effective, etc.), damaging, etc. Some could be the inverse improved performance.
This could allow unique game play as each race is effected differently. Older and more advanced races could have technics for channaling the different nebula properties.
This would make it great for gas giant missions.
the effect could also be used for an atmospheric missions, the Inferno 2 Release if I'm right and the Star Fox Mod.
edit:
I just though about something else. we could have packets of volatle gases that ignite when weapons, engines or even contact with the hull of a ship.
And think about having a mine field in a sensor inhibiting nebula. that would be a very nasty surprise to walk into.
-
Hm, that sounds all very good and would be certainly nice additions (freelancer-fan, aren't ye ;) ), but don't scare away the SCP-Members from even the idea creating a spheroid asteroid-field for me  , I would be already happy when I just get that done (and the SCP-members who know me and my request-list will certainly not believe, that I actually said this ;)

Truthfully I've never played freelancer, and if my C++ knowledge was a bit better I would help them. However, I am still what most would consiter a beginner programer, despit my 14 years of on and off programming, most of that was mainlyl in Qbasic, C++ up to functions until last semester (loving those classes), and Java which I haven't don't in years. My d3d knowledge is 0. so As much as I want to help SCP I can't right now.

Well, create me a spheroid asteroid-field and I can gurantee that your name will be mentioned in our credits
