Title: Disabling fire trail damage effect

There an entry in the ships tbl [show damage: yes/no].

Does setting this to no disable those particle fire trails? Or is there another way?

No, that flag controls whether hull percentage is shown or not.  There is no way to disable damage fire, except for altering the ANI to black.
