I lost my copy of Freespace 2 a while back and several computers ago, and am trying to regain a full version of it, then pimp it out with Open and get into the mods, but doing so seems to be putting a strain on my limited skills.
First of all, I've got the regkeys from the FTP site, but when I try to open them or merge them with regedit, it claims they aren't proper binaries.
After I do that, does anyone have any suggestions on how to procede without making FS2 explode. I've got most but not all of the proper vps, deleted the files (not directories) that are associated with the ones I have and overwrote them into my fs2 directory, and broke it somehow, at some point. I'm not sure. I ran the launcher a while back and I guess that was bad. Also, when exactly should I install the toot_fs2_vp from the FTP. Yeah.
So I've started over with a fresh unpacking of the hotu. Any advice would be welcome cause I'm dumb as hell.

Once you have all the original VPs installed, you should be able to:
.5) Optionally, install the mediaVPs (Official 3.6.5 release soon)
1) Run the ORIGINAL launcher, setup some of the stuff, and click OK/Quit
2) Run the fs2_open Launcher, set up the settings
3) Run fs2_open

Should I still worry about those registry keys? I guess the root_fs2_vp should go in at the same times as the vps?

Noop, that's what running the launchers is for.
Edit: Noop about the registry keys, that is; if you mean root_fs2.vp, then the answer is yes.
And, er, the retail VPs are:
smarty_fs2.vp
sparky_fs2.vp
sparky_hi_fs2.vp
stu_fs2.vp
tango1_fs2.vp
tango2_fs2.vp
tango3_fs2.vp
warble_fs2.vp
root_fs2.vp

Why does everybody always say they "lost" the game CDs? The local trash man must be swimming in FS CDs by now. So many of them get "lost" every week...:D
It´s not a crime to get them from other sources now, the game is free for all now.
Maybe someone should consider stickifying a thread explaining where and how to get the files, since this same exact question is asked every week.
Oh, and if the FTP likns don´t work, i sugest you make a search in the eDonkey network. All 3 CDs are there, with plenty of sources. Just don´t ask me how to get them... Not here, anyway.

tonight you can download the full install of fs2 as it appears on the original CDs by downloading the three disk images, or .iso's. You will need a program to mount them or burn it to a disk, but it is worth it. After that, all you need to do is download the patch, get zpack, scp launcher, and scp executable. You do not need to get those things to play vanilla freespace 2 but, as you said, you want the SCP.

Hey, if I hadn't played and loved Freespace 2 to completion, you think I'd be willing to go to this much trouble to get a new copy? :D
I guess by "lost" I mean I lent them to a friend and never got them back. My own fault really, I could have bugged him harder for them, but that was a long long time ago, and I'm not willing to pay fifty freaking bucks for it on ebay.
Thanks for the information on the isos, but managed to grab all the vps off the ftp, so I'm gonna take another whack at setting this bad boy up.

Oookay... so I put all the vps where they belong. But now when I run the FS2 launcher and try to set up things 1) the apply button is greyed out and b) when I hit play it tells me that the launcher hasn't been run and starts it back up.
Buh? :wtf:

I am unable to help, as I have no first hand experience. I am waiting for Game Warden to finish the host switching.

Which launcher? FS2 retail or FS2_Open? If it's the former make sure you haven't got the FS2_Open media.vp files in there at the time. It probably won't like them.

Do you mean the SCP launcher? If so, you need to "point" the launcher to the FS .exe. That is usually overlooked.

Thanks for the help guys, but I'm not talking about the scp launcher, nor am I using the open vp files.
Yeah... I think I might need to dump everything and start over... anyone have any advice on making sure I scour everything from the registry?

Before you do dump everything try using the SCP launcher to run the retail version of FS2.
You may be surprised but I've heard of that fixing problems before. :)
