another pirate fighter, untextured:

designed it to work with bob's animation code, the missile bays wil open/close when selected/deselected.
model is actually based of of one of my early designs cept with extra miniguns this time :D
im gonna add a bit more detail after i uv map some redundant stuff. im aiming for 3k polies, its ~2600 now

Why is the cockpit so huge, or is the ship really really small?

i needed a ship other than my modified ulesses that could fit into a criuser's docking bay. the cockpit should be about the same size as the ulysses cockpit. :D save that long spike out the back this thing is about the same length of a ulysses. so yes, this is a very small ship yet suprisingly well armed for its size. ammo will be at a premium for it though. still not sure how its gonna dock for re-arm, it kinda has alot of stuff sticking out of it. :D

Alltough you might wanna make that cockpit a tad smaller. It goes all the way to the bottom, and the missile launcher come out of hte the bottom.
Looks like the epilots is siting on the launcher..literary...

Yeah, but I wonder where the ammo is placed. There's obviously no room for it. :D
The cockpit looks to structured, with all those small window tiles. IMHO.

all my other windows are bubbly, struts are the way to go this time. besides this cockpit would give you a better field of view than most. as for the missle bay being incredibly close to the pilot's ass, well yea, i guess the pilot's seat sits right atop the bulkhead.

as for ammo storage, the thing uses 50mm caseless, with about 500 rounds per gun. i figure i could put a small tripple helical feed system in there and it would give you about 1500 rounds in all. rounds being caseless would be shorter than anything were familiar with and would take up less space.

The cockpit struts are :doubt:
If you intend to keep'em, struts that follow the bubble shape would look better IMHO.

The triangulated look kinda ruins the look of the ship.

I think it'd be a bit better if the struts were thinner or something.
And only 1500 rounds? How long will it take for me to run out of ammo with this one? ;) I should work on ammo conservation...

It looks more alien than something that's simply a pirate fighter. In fact, it has a vaguely Minbari look to it, though that may be due to the blue color of it... which will be changed once its textured I expect. However, if it were up to me to say what it is, it would be a fighter designed for the Inter-Stellar Alliance from B5, kind of a hybrid of EA and Minbari.

yea its probibly the gayish pastels i used on the thing, only cause it contrasts with the wireframe color, thus alowwing better visibility when using pointedit tools. for pirate fighters ive been using earthcolors, rusty metals, flat shades of greys, and a small amount of vasudan bioarmor in some areas. kinda makes em look like they are pieced out of bits and pieces of random space junk.i want trying to ake it look alien, but rather make it look like some crazy desing that a pirate made on his own, perhaps the pirate in question bought it from fat tony's custom space ships :D
i think i miscalculated fire times for the guns, they would actually chew through their ammo supply (linked or single) in 31.25 seconds. i wouldnt venture too far from the rearm vessel.

Make it run out of ammo in 10 seconds, and name the Weapon the

i would seriously jack my fire rates if the engine supported tracering (that is rendering only one out of x number of shots). 16 rounds a second is suffitient for a 3 barreled 50mm cannon. my fastest gatlings crank out about 30 rnds a second, but those are the larger anti-capitol maniguns. in contrast a modern gau-8 avenger will crank out an easy 70 30mm rounds a second.
i havent set up smooth groups yet. i should be able to use multiple materials with different autofaucet settings. right now im busy uv mapping the ship, ive got 20 or so textures on it right now. each filling in for its own smoothgroup. i found that if you hold down the control key while using the free hand select tool you can select an entire group (with a unique texture) in one click. i wish id known this from the start.

6000 rounds per minute (100 per second) is a standard for lower caliber miniguns...
There's a russian 30mm gattling gun (GŠK-39 I bleive) that can spit out 24000 rpm!!!!!!

the only real limits on them is how much rpm you give the thing. a gatling gun is probibly one of the most complicated machines out there. a linkless 2 way feed is probibly the fastest.and it doesnt jam. other limits include the centrafugal g-loads which can actually warp the barels outward, also increasing the number of barels will help get the speed up without increasing rpm. plenty of oil helps too as does lubricated ammo. the us ups the damage by mixing u-238 high explosive, armor piercing incendiary and tracer rounds in i believe a 5-1-1 mix. while the russian gun probibly uses fmj.
as for the model its fully uv mapped, and just needs smoothgroups and a texture. ive never bothered going through the trouble of using smoothgroups before, anyone got any pointers?

it looks kinda messy up front but this is only a 512 texture, when i hit photoshop i will use a 4096^2 texture, its better to make your textures higher res than you indtend to use, just gives you more to work with.

i just wehnt through the trouble of animating all the missile bays, it looks sweet :D i aded some winglets to the engine missile launchers, they fold out when the bank is selected, kind of a last minute touch to spice up the animation effect abit. now i await an offitial buld with bob's animation code. when im not too busy il do the texture, but i got it flying already.

While pretty cool, it looks like it would be more at home in like, SeaQuest DSV or something, rather than space... ;)

it must be vasudan...vasudan's wuv fishes....kinda cool though. i really like it from the side, now show us her backside.

i wasnt trying to make it look like a fishey, it just sorta came out that way. the slender back end is similar to something i saw on a glider at an airshow or something. i get alot of inspiration from real aircraft, more so than i draw from any scifi show or movie. the ww2 style glased nose (though i used an unorthadox geodiasic style in this case) like on the chaos (im thinking about a third revision of the chaos, with 4 100mm autocannons :D ). i used my radial modeling techniqe (used on the gvb atlas, sf succubus, af charlatan, and this ship) on the wings . the gunpods i didnt put much thought into, just playing with the sweep tool, they flowed with the spike in the back and enphasized the shape properly. the engine pods are very similar to the rockt pods on the satyr, just in reverse and with wells for the fold out missile launchers. those winglets fold out when you arm the rocket bank
overal the fighter is a short range recon craft. it has a small ammo supply and no energy weapons, so when you are out of ammo yr pretty much screwed. being only about 10 meters in length she will be able to land in the small docking on the rumrunner class pirate criuser.

all pirate vessels are constructed of both terran and vasudan components. they also all have gatling guns :D this is number 6 or 7, i forget.

well the thing looks like a Vasudan design, why not have it from a (primaraly) Vasudan pirate clan

there are vasudan pirates, but they associate closely with terran pirates. pirates have in general rejected thier respective societys and have formed their own small clans. the clans themselves are not very big and are pretty ragtag. in general pirate ships are chop shop hybrid desings. this is my 7th pirate fighter, basicly ive gone with an earthcolors and shiny metal scheme. the vasudan style plating (generated complements of the baked earth filter) fits in nicely. untill now i had used the vasudan plating sparingly on the pirate fighters. it could be safe to say the ship is vasudan designed, however it will not be strictly a vasudan fighter.

but what you could do is make it like the GVF Shu. just 3 fins and at the top a docking place for support ships and ammo. ;)

i still need shine/env maps on the main skin but you get the idea. the cockpit is abit small so the clipping plane is giving me hell. anyway i think its cool, still looking for a name for it though. i still need a pilot, brpbibly somone in leather and with dreas puffin on a glowpointed blunt or something, hes a pirate and pirates have the eyepatch thing goin, but eyepatches are kinda outdated so i thought about some terminator style occular implant,. polycound is already through the roof, in excess of 6k, so i need a really low poly pilot, cant use nico's cause his pilot has no feet.

this ship uses an insanely high res texture (2048^2). the photoshop document was 170 megs when i finsihed it, 60 layers and about a hundred vector masks. 90% was rendered by using blending options for each layer and hundreds of premade patters which hav acunumated over time. i didnt implement proper shadowning, but thats just a mater of going through and figuring out what layers to apply iot too then seimply adjust blending oprions till it looks right. probibly not, minor details like that are unimportant, 90% of the time you see this thing is from a distance.
im trying to add a cockpit to the pf shagrath now, its moddeled and uv mapper, i pulled the chair out of this ship and remodeled it to fit the new cockpit. i need to re-uv map the thing and then cut and paste the texture parts to a new image. its gonna be cool cause the shagrath has miniguns that potrude out past the eye point, so you will be able to see them from the first person perspective.. the shagrath has a bubble cockpit so it shouldnt suffer the same clipping errors.

shagrath is the textured one on the left, this ship is still unnamed. for this one, im thinking 'glader' :D infact i have enough ships to give one to each and every past and presant member of dimmu borgir :D

I really like the Malestrom, but personally I think the gatling barrels are liek too long. I would suggest making them like 1/2 to 1/3 rd the current length. But that's just an opinion. Great job!

i had designed it as a next generation gtva heavy stealth bomber, but that screwed up balence big time, so now its a non stealth gunboat.
the release of nukemod r3 is still a ways away, i have countless features to implement, game balencing, and then of course the missions, which axem is so kindly doing for me. r2 had only 4 ships, while r3 will have in excess of 20.

i just adeed alpha chanels to all my shine maps, should make them all look a little better now. im still waiting for a buld that supports both bob's animation code and the "show ship" flag. i finished putting the cockpit in the shagrath. for my next task i think il work on the pc rumrunner (the wannabe bird of prey). im getting bored with photoshiop so i guess il do some modeling.

i just modeled the interieor for the pf satyr, still need to uvmap/texture it though. its got a big interior, gives you a nice view of the minigun and the turret in the back (via the rearview window). she doubles as a cargo vessel/landing craft, and can carry a few passengers too if need be.

the satyr is the one next to the shagrath in the last pic, the one with the laser coming out of the turret. i made its nose bulbus on purpose, so it can be used as a party ship :thepimp:

nah i was freeing up some space on my uploadit account, must have deleted a few files i was still using. i use penguinbomb for the really cool pics, but i perfer uploadit cause i dont have to make thumbnails
