Title: My very first model!
Post by: Singh on January 09, 2005, 04:27:35 am
Yes! I finally made a model. Ok, so I didn't exactly do it from scratch, and ended up cheating and instead making it from the prefabricated parts from DoGA CGA,but hey, better than nothing I say :D

I've dubbed her the Triest Class Battleship

Any comments? :D

to me the first pic,  resembles a tank or one of those "invasion" boats used in ww2. Maybe you should take some guns away and make it a troop transport or boarding team ship.

Well it looks way better than my first model that im currently working on.

looks more like a carrier or a defensive platform with that flat area in the middle, very nice job, though.

Reminds me of the S:AAB carriers with a bunch more guns put on it :D

I keep saying that I should try out DoGA CGA :D

Thanks :D

The area at the back is actually a space for fighters/bombers to launch (hence hte lack of guns there). I'm actually trying to find a way to export it to .cob or something, so I can get into freespace perhaps (once I figure out the evil mapping!). Can lithunwrap convert .pfw files?

I did some ships is Doga as well, but I can't just get screenies of them, because, well, I am an idiot. Print Screen doesn't work either.

Just wanted to warn you, when you put it in TS, you find that the black is just painted on the missile turrets and some of the gun turrets. But, the model looks good and well put together.

It's not supposed to look FS-y, is it? :)

It definitly looks SAAB inspired. :)

A suggestion : You've added so much detail, why did you make such low-poly thrusters-cones? You should really redo the engine part. I suggest giving him on each side two engines (such a type which starts bigger and then gets smaller at the exhaust, thats just a suggestion though) Besides that, really not bad for a "first" model.

Spoiler:
It'll never float

nice work, but it looks somewhat like a boat
Title: My very first model!
Post by: Singh on January 09, 2005, 10:11:07 pm
well....er....so it does. I always think of boats when it comes to spaceships, dunno why :nervous:

I'll see if i can do something about those engines, but since the parts available are pretty limited, it'll be somewhat tough. More updates when I get back from home :D

Boxy, colorblind, and horrible firing arcs. Definitely a Terran ship. Good model though. Needs more detail in the stern. An assault carrier, yes? (I do realise it's not textured yet=P)

yup. Meant for siege and bombardments operations against heavy enemy installations, with space for fighters and/or bombers towards the rear.

Well, looks like DOGA automatically UV maps it's parts, meaning that i dont have the face the evilness of lithunwrap! :D

That, and I upgraded to DOGA L3, which has the option of putting textures on it. Here's a few WIP shots, but take note that it's in no way complete:

I like it, but I think you're going to need to work with the UV-ing manually to get a good result.

Well, not much I can say except I agree with you. But it's the best I can do, and considering my UVMapping skills are = -infinity, I don't think i'll be able to improve much on it.

Unless of course, I use other means :drevil:

Looks like 2 Missouri class battleships sellotaped together, and yet, if I were a capship commander, I'd be very nervous of one of them ;)

update. All textures complete. Some of this shots were WIP when I took 'em, the last one is the finalized version.

As you can see, a few specular issues.....

But then, I think I got it right :D. A pretty ominous-looking ship when it's in the dark :nervous:

Somehow I'm expecting the thing to have wheels, because it looks like a tank.

It desperatly wants volume, and a shape.

Awesome, but the weapons are too big on such a small body. The ship has no individual form, all it is is a bunch of detailed turrets.

Post by: Starman01 on January 12, 2005, 01:07:39 pm
While it isn't so bad in the renders, you will have to arrange the turret-arms now in the viagra-way (standing right up) in order to let them work properly ingame, which will really suck on this model :(

I dont quite get you on this one.....

Should I try to tone the turrets down a bit, perhaps increasing the total visible surface area? Is that what you are referring to?

It looks like a rectangle with guns on it. On pontoons. Hence the riverbarge-ness.

Somewhat yes. But what I'm talking about, is that it requires a unique shape now-a-days. This is in fact just one very nicely done, rectangularly shaped cube (yeah, geometry terms evade me). Those went out with the second mission of Wing Commander 4.

As said, it's a good model for a first time, but the unique shapes are where it's at, and this is...the basic of basics.

I'm looking forward to a more complex one from you, the last screenshot looks awesome, if the model had a new cutting unique shape (like latest works of Swamp, etc.)

Yes, I like that, it has a lot more character, which is actually quite important in a campaign :)

Obviously that race compensates for a certain shortcomming. ;)

Nice, my first thoughts were *The centauri meets the Cylons, meets Thunderbird 2???* Seriously cut back on the turret barrles at least by half! Just an opinion...

Looks somehow like a pirate ship to me.

Does anybody know 'Spaceship Warlock' ?

Well, she's pretty much done now (no, I didn't reduce the forward barrels, but I did cut down on the bottom ones).....anyone wanna help me convert her into .pof? :p

Save it in Direct X format and you can get it in TS, and then convert it to POF.

Yeah, but what about the turrets and other stuff? How can I get those to work properly?

Here is Karajorma's FS faq. I allready sent Cobra here, and I have the link on the turreting part of the Faq. But, also check the rest, it should help you alot.

ach, no go. The turrets are part of the main body in this case, I cant select each one individually....

Hmm...can I save the body itself first, then add the turrets individually by loading them as different objects later?
Title: My very first model!
Post by: WeatherOp on January 14, 2005, 08:35:56 pm
Yeah, just delete the turrets in DOGA, and save the body. And then save it in Direct X format, and get it in TS. Then just get the turrets you want in DOGA and do the same. Once you get e'm in TS, do like the Faq says. I'f you need me too, I'll get some pics.

AAARGHHH!!! Truespace should die!!! The damn picture is all in wireframe, so I have no clue as to where to put the turrets, or how to move 'em there. The worst is teh damn view! If I try zooming out, the ship size just remains the same and I cant see a thing! Worst is that if I try to rotate or move the view, it's no use as the ship just remains in the center of the view as opposed to the center of the grid!!!

I try rendering the damn thing so at least I can what's where, but it remembers _none_ of the texture data from DoGA and doesn't even render properly (it comes out blank)!
