seeing as there was an anime thread a while back, I thought it would be worth mentioning that R.O.D. is quite awesome. I'm not exactly a connoisseur of anime but this is one of the best I've seen. There's a three-episod OVA (straight to video thing) as well as a TV series. It has good animation, awesome fights, great characters, and voice acting that doesn't suck (very doesn't suck). There's even some Bush bashing and UK pimping for you Brits.
I'd definitely say it's worth looking into (http://www.lindenryuujin.34sp.com/DreamsOfTwilight/index.php).

Seen it...twice...on Cartoon Network. Is quite good. The US President doesn't really look like Bush though, more like Clinton
*scuttles off to check R.O.D.s release date*
-
According to AnimeNfo, 2001.
-
didn't the US pres have a texas accent and was realy gung-ho, if it was a clinton mockary it would be more like
hot femail aid:"MR presedent there is a madman about to induce a mass suicide across the world billions will die"
pres:/*sitting back and relaxing with a set of fine cuban cigars*/
"look that's nice shug'a why don't you walk that tight ass over here and tell me more about it"

*dies*

Oh it's definitely Bush. He distinctly says "nucular missiles".
-
Bush impersonations are teh win:

Or indeed http://www.2dtv.co.uk/movie/arnie_and_bush.htm

The president is nobody in particular. He's just an embodiment of the Stereotypical American as seen by the Japanese. He's a little Bush, a little Clinton, a little Nixon...
Well, Read or Die is my favourite anime of all time, despite the Yank hate. A modern masterpiece.

What I found disturbing is that any party could develop technology so far ahead of anybody else that the US Navy couldn't damage it at all.
That and the vague lesbian thing between The Paper and Matahari.
-
so I guess no one's seen the TV show but me?
-
Incorrect.
ROD the TV (heh, that name still amuses me) had a couple great moments, like Anna flying through the pile of books in the first ep and the 'HOLY ****, what just happened' instant midway through.
-
I"ve only seen the first half so far (the half that was on G4TechTV), but I'm going to 'acquire' the rest of it.
-
Ahh. Guess I won't say anything more then.
-
good idea.
I agree with what you've said so far though. The first episode is one of my favorites (so far) and if we're talking about the same plot twist, then yes, it's quite a shocker. That was the last episode G4 showed as well. I was like "WTF?" for days.

I found it delightful :p
and what do you mean vague?
and we do have spoiler tags guys.
-
I meant vague as in it was never actually said that they were lesbian lovers. I don't recall that they ever had time to consumate their relationship. This doesn't mean that I approve you understand, simply that it's hard to miss.
-
Jesus - they were never lesbian lovers, stop being silly. The japanese suffixes they use for each other are familial, the same you'd use for a sister or close cousin. Having watched both the OVA, the series, and read the manga (although that diverges quite heavily from the main plotline) there's really nothing there to comment on, but then again people love reading homosexual subtexts into anime, for whatever reason.
With regarads to the actual work: I loved it! Especially the OVA, which seriously should have been a theatrical release - you could pretty much replace crap like the LEG (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) movie with it.
The series is also a favourite, up to the last two episodes or so, where they had the typical anime muddled plotlines and aspects left unresolved. However, the earlier episodes, anita at school, the sisters bonding, and yes, many of the interesting plot twists make it more than a worthwhile view.
-
no one said they were, there was just a lot of, eh, chemistry. or at least there seamed to be.
-
I've only seen the movie. In particular, I liked the music they used during the fight scenes.
I found it strange and funny that every scene featuring the U.S President had him pissing himself...
