...and, being poor, I can't pay for actual lessons.
I need links - lots of 'em.

Yes, being a rock star does help with the ladies.
-
It's not just being able to play guitar that does it. It's the implied partying and/or sexual experience that reels in the cheap sluts.
You don't get the good women till you start doing all that touchy-feely writing bull**** and 'expressing yourself' through your music.
-
either that or you could just play really fast and say you're good with your fingers.
-
And if they reject you, you've got 6 handy little lengths of metal wire.......
-
6?
wait i'm stupid...
Actualy only 3 are very usefull mabye, the coiled ones might suck.
-
http://www.cyberfret.com/ has some really helpful lessons. And http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ has the best lessons. Join the forums there, too. They're really helpful as long as you don't go be n00bish. If that NAME GOES HERE guy shows up, that'd be me. Once you start learning, it will get even better. :)
-
How... out of character of you an0n.
-
So, acoustic or electric?
Best tip ever: never rush. Get your moves right, build up speed later. You try any other way, and your technique is going to be pretty messed up no matter how good you are.
-
Use the elbow, not the wrist!
*doesn't even play*
-
Its all in the follow-through!
*doesn't play either*

Very true.
It might even apply to playing guitars too! ;)
-
ba-da-da-boom!
-
In 5 hours I may die of stress, that was the best I could come up with!
-
guitar? hey cool. have you got one yet? have you got a piccy?
(*music* "girls don't like boys, girls like cars and money... and guitars?" *music*)
-
While I'm sure someone here will string you up for quoting GC, tis a very good song.
-
Ngkkkkkk.....
*cringes*
Heathens. It's a bloody awful song. Good Charlotte are a nasty, foul-smelling, crusty splatter of a stain on "alternative" music. They're supposedly "punk" but have no ****ing idea what punk even is. Go and listen to some Bad Religion. That's ****ing punk. :blah:
/RANT
Anyhoo - anon - you really won't get very good without some lessons of some sort. You can learn all the chord shapes and scales in the world, but you need to have someone with experience who can tell you how to do stuff, what you're doing well and what you're doing badly. Even if you just know someone else who plays, get 'em to help you. You'll improve much faster that way...

pyro, mate, I think you're totally wrong there.
They're much worse than that.

This is all just musical snobbery!
And I aced that exam. So :p.
-
In regards to various questions asked: I have a piece of crap, £150 Electric Guitar + Amp set from Argos. I got it like 2-3 years back for Christmas and never bothered with it because everytime I strummed a note, my annoying **** of a brother would come wandering in going "Woooo! Look at you - Eric ****ing Clapton".
And I've resigned myself to the fact that he's too stupid to ever change and that caving his head in with a big ****ing rock would be counter-productive. Just once I'd like to be able to snap without my brain going "Whoa, whoa, whoa! Think about the prison time...."
So I'm 'learning' (*shudders*) while he's out at work.
-
Just learn the Basic major and minor chords, and next time he does it, play something like 'Wonderful Tonight', it's about 5 chords, and despite being crap, will at least shut your brother up ;)
-
I still prefer the 'bludgeoned to death' idea.
-
I got a new guitar for christmas and let me tell you, it is hard to learn all of the cords and all the fretting movements and stuff, but it sure is fun when you can finally play a song. I can play one offspring song, as well as the white stripes, but they are probably the easiest songs ever.
-
Im trying to learn myself, and from what I've gathered from my little experience, the key really is practice. Miss a day and you probably wount notice it, miss a week and I guarentee you will.

Thats where I get all my supplies, gear, and accessories. Good prices since it's just after christmas.
Im currently playing this package: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/g=guitar/search/detail/base_pid/519456/

I have just remembered how damn hard this **** is.
*bangs head against desk*
-
It takes a long time to get to the point that you can stand to hear yourself play. I dont have the time anymore, but I assume that you do, so try to find something to keep you interested in practicing.

IMO you should really stick to the harmonica.

so it wasn't an exam on musical taste then?
:p
-
hehehehe You need to get to the point where you think 'G' and your fingers automatically fret it, that's when guitar playing becomes fun ;)

If I ever get bored enough to go road-tripping across America, I'll definitely learn the Harmonica. It'll help pass the time while I'm in the local jails for public nudity and such.
